Romantic Things to Do in Sedona, Arizona
Red rock formations looming over downtown Sedona
The minute Sedona, Arizona starts to loom in the distance as you inch closer on the wide-open highway, you'll start to suspect that Sedona is unlike any town you've visited before. Nestled in the stunning red-rock sandstone formations that are frankly out of this world, Sedona sometimes feels like a luxury colony on another planet. Sedona's unique location has made it a tourist and retirement destination, as early as the 1950s. More recently, Sedona has increasingly become a fine dining and luxury resort destination, though don't worry, there's still plenty of 'touristy' and 'other-worldly' to be had, Incidentally, if that sort of things interests you, don't worry, there are plenty of crystal purveyors to keep your mystical self occupied.

Cozied up in this magical setting, it's no wonder you've come here in search of romantic things to do! With only about 10,000 residents, Sedona hasn't lost its small-town charm. And with more than one high-end hotel to choose from, not to mention lovely shopping, Sedona is much more than Himalayan salt lamps. So let's discuss some romantic things to do on a trip to Sedona!

FAQ

How far is Sedona from Phoenix?

Sedona, Arizona
Sedona is a two hour drive, almost directly north from Phoenix/Scottsdale. We flew in and out of Phoenix, then drove up to Sedona for a few nights, and then back down to Scottsdale for the end of our trip.

What is the elevation in Sedona?

Sedona, Arizona
The elevation in Sedona is 4,350 feet above sea level. While this enables you to have wonderful views of the night sky, it is unlikely that you will feel significant effects of the elevation, or have your romantic date night ruined, if you're just exploring the city of Sedona. (The general consensus is that 5280 is when you may start to 'feel it').

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Stay at L'Auberge de Sedona

L'Auberge de Sedona, Romantic Things to Do in Sedona, Arizona
L'Auberge de Sedona
When we list our top hotels (in the world!), our charming stay at L'Auberge de Sedona always makes the list. For my money, L'Auberge is the best hotel in Sedona. Tucked into a surprisingly quiet corner of sometimes bustling Sedona, on quaint, bubbling, Oak Creek, L'Auberge offers all the romance of a secluded retreat, with the convenience and plentiful nearby attractions of a popular tourist destination. L'Auberge is one of the best luxury resorts in the Southwest for a reason. Need a little extra relaxation? Their spa treatments are to die for.
Whether you opt for your own private cottage, or stay in the stunning Lodge, expect first-class service, try the restaurants, spend some time in the hot tub, and be sure to bring a good book to devour while relaxing in one of the many scenic seating areas. Enjoy a glass of wine (or, you know what, a bottle of wine) on the most perfectly situated Adirondack chairs I've ever seen, with spectacular views of the red rocks formations.
L'Auberge not sounding like your type of hotel? There are certainly many hotel options in Sedona. Check out Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock and Enchantment Resort.

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Explore Tlaquepaque - Arts & Shopping Village

Undoubtedly my favorite corner of Sedona, the Tlaquepaque 'crafts village' is a town unto itself. High-end shops, quaint dining, and the most charming architecture make Tlaquepaque the ideal spot to spend an afternoon in Sedona. And don't forget to grab beers and a delicious chicken salad sandwich at Oak Creek Brewery & Grill. We loved it so much, we ate there twice in 3 days.

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Watch the sunset over the rocks at a leisurely downtown dinner

There's nothing more romantic than watching the sunset while enjoying a few adult beverages in Sedona. Excellent wine and margaritas are a must during your stay in the Southwest. A few romantic dinner destinations in Sedona:
  • Cress on Oak Creek (at L'Auberge de Sedona)
  • Creekside American Bistro
  • SaltRock Kitchen
  • 89 AgavaCantina

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Take a Pink Jeep Tour

Pink Jeep Tours are absolutely a bucket list item on a trip to Sedona. If you're willing to pay (a lot) extra, you can up the 'romance factor' and reserve a private tour for you and your special someone.

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Admire the sunrise with morning stroll

While the temperatures can reach *alarming* levels during the day, early morning is the perfect time to stroll Sedona, before the heat and the day tourists increase (on a Saturday, you'll see a line of cars snaking its way through downtown). Whether you want an easier walks along the banks of Oak Creek, or to seek out some of the many hiking trails that snake around Sedona, I promise you'll be glad you started your morning the right way.For more information on hiking around Sedona:

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
See Sedona from the sky!

The best view of Sedona's red rocks, or so I'm told, is from a helicopter, high above the rugged landscape. If you're followed the blog for a while, you know that grabbing these panoramic views is *not* something we did during our time in Sedona, but if you're braver than me, consider a helicopter tour or hot air balloon ride.

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Discover the Chapel of the Holy Cross

Chapel of the Holy Cross, Sedona, Arizona.
Chapel of the Holy Cross
Spending all that time staring at the red rocks, you'll notice the stunning, modern Chapel of the Holy Cross nestled in their midst. The chapel was completed in 1956, after several attempts to build it in various locations (seems to me they picked the right one, in the end!). Chapel of the Holy Cross is open 9-5, 7 days/week for visitors.

Romantic Things to Do in Sedona:
Indulge in a few wine tastings

In my book, you can never go wrong with wine. Valentine's Day? Wine. Anniversary trip? Wine. Wine is always the answer, especially on any list of romantic things to do.

A few wine options to exploring while you're in Sedona:
  • Page Springs Cellars
  • Valley Verde Wine Trail

The Montezuma Castle National Monument, a 100+ year old national park and the third dedicated to the preservation of Native American historical sites, is a 20-room apartment carved into a mountain rock face. While you're there, check out other attractions in the Verde Valley.

Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon
Somehow, in all of my traipsing around the United States, I never actually visited the Grand Canyon as a kid on that quintessential American family road trip.
A day trip to the Grand Canyon from Sedona is easy enough, if you want to check out this wonder of the natural world, while you're in the region. It's about a 2 hour drive from Sedona to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, or you can hop aboard the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams (which I'd incidentally recommend, as the scenic drive is a bit difficult).  Take in the spectacular views, and check the Grand Canyon off of your bucket list before heading back to the luxurious retreat that is Sedona.
