Newfields Winterlights: The Basics

Newfields Winterlights, Indianapolis
Each year, starting after Thanksgiving and lasting through the Christmas holidays, Newfields hosts its most popular event of the year, Winterlights, when the grounds and Lilly estate on the property are fully illuminated with more Christmas lights than you've ever seen in one place. It's the hottest ticket in town, so be sure to book early.

When is Newfields Winterlights?

Winterlights starts November 22, 2021 and runs through the new year, ending January 2, 2022.

What time is Newfields Winterlights?

Winterlights runs 5PM-9PM most nights.

Tickets

Even when there isn't a pandemic, everyone, including Newfields members, should buy tickets well in advance of Winterlights, as it frequently sells out. Ticket prices have not increased since last year:

FAQ: Do I need a Newfields entry ticket in addition to a Winterlights ticket?

Newfields Winterlights, Indianapolis
Yes and no. Purchase of a Newfields daytime entrance ticket does not give you entrance to Winterlights at night. However, if you're visiting after hours, all you need is a Winterlights ticket, as the museum portion is closed anyway.

Parking at Winterlights

Parking for Winterlights is *free* with your ticket. On crowded nights, you will be directed by attendants to park in the large lot, including on the grass, and then you will walk to the check-in area, back toward the front of the museum entrance.

Safety Precautions

Masks are required during your visit. For 2020, Winterlights was a bit different even from Harvest Nights earlier this year. The event was *entirely* outdoors, aside from the restrooms. Guests were not able to enter Oldfields to see the Christmas decor inside (as is usually done), and were not routed through the museum for drinks.

What if it rains?

Tickets are non-refundable, but exchange options are available. It drizzled during our visit to Winterlights, but with our winter coats and gloves, it was no less enjoyable!

Newfields Winterlights: What to Expect

Newfields Winterlights, Indianapolis
Your visit to Winterlights will start near the entrance of the museum. From there, you'll enter the grounds under a canopy of large, blazing snowflakes. Immediately on your left, you'll see Oldfields, the Lilly Mansion, with both its facade decorated, and featuring the highlight of the event, the light display in the estate's front yard, timed to festive music.

After Oldfields, you'll continue through the grounds, walking under arbors of colored lights, and featuring warming stations. You'll find a giant Christmas tree constructed entirely of plastic kids toys, and an enchanting magical forest of lights, taking you back to the exit.

How long does Winterlights take?
Expect to spend at least an hour, once you arrive, not including parking. The ticket lines aren't long, but you'll want to have some time to stroll and get a cocktail! You're welcome to stay as little or as along as you please.

Winterlights: Food and Drink

Local drinks (alcoholic and non) and snacks are on offer at several stands throughout the event. Check out the menu to get a taste!
