We've very happily just returned from our first trip to Chicago in *2 years?* How the times flies. Under normal circumstances, we're in Chicago at least once a year, if not more.

And where do we stay on this visits to the Windy City? Well, as you'd expect, it depends!

​Most recently, we booked our first trip, for my birthday (number to remain unmentioned), at Viceroy Chicago, up in Chicago's Gold Coast, just North of Michigan Avenue.

Viceroy Chicago: The Basics

According to our bartender at Gibson's (a must-visit, by the way), Viceroy is a former affordable housing complex, though you wouldn't know what by looking at the lobby today. Now, it's a boutique small-chain hotel, with a gorgeous rooftop pool and bar, charming restaurant, and views of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan.

Viceroy Chicago: Gold Coast Location

Viceroy's location in Chicago's Gold Coast is one of its main selling features. For the uninitiated, the "Gold Coast" is a relatively small, high-end area, just north of the ultra-touristy Michigan Avenue, that's home to chic brownstones, cozy bars, more than its fair share of steak houses, and the best shopping in the city. While the center of gravity for tourists in Chicago has definitely shifted toward the river, during my time visiting the area (the last 30 years- eek!), the new mega hotels lining the river could be in any major metropolis. They lack the "Real Chicago" flavor of the hotels up in this area, including, of course, The Drake.

Viceroy Chicago: Amenities

Viceroy Chicago is a pet-friendly hotel! Joey unfortunately wasn't invited on this trip, but we'd love to try it out someday. Also boasting an in-hotel fitness center, high-end soap/shampoo, etc., you're sure to have a luxurious experience.

Viceroy Chicago: Guestrooms

We opted for a Deluxe Lake View King, which includes plenty of space, a shockingly large bathroom with marble walls, and, of course, killer views of Lake Michigan. With a small table and chaise lounge for non-bed sitting, you don't really need a suite for two people, if you upgrade to this level guest room.

Full-service in-room, restaurant, and bar dining are all available, if you're looking to stay in for your meals at Viceroy Chicago. Somerset is the anchor restaurant, with gorgeous outdoor seating right on State Street. No visit to Viceroy Chicago would be complete without a drink at Deveraux, the popular rooftop, poolside bar on the 18th floor of the hotel.
