Where does the time go? I truly can't believe I'm already circling back to update one of my favorite 'mom life' posts, having gotten another year of that crazy new mom life under my belt.

After months of endless feedings, diapers, diapers, and more diapers, long days, and the highest of highest (and, let's be real, some of the lowest of lows), new moms deserve some serious pampering on their first Mother's Day. No year of mothering is easy, I've learned, but that first year is undoubtedly the hardest. While one day will never be enough to thank a new mom for all she does, her first Mother's Day should be one to remember.

And since I appreciate that new mothers can be extremely difficult to buy gifts for, and I know it's easier said than done to find the perfect present for a new parent, I thought I'd share my suggestions for gift ideas for new moms, based on my experiences both as a new mom and as someone who buys gifts for the new moms in my life.

Side note: one of the saddest things I'd found while blogging, as I researched this post, one of the FAQ's when you're searching for the best Mother's Day gifts is "how can I make my first Mother's Day special?" The fact any women are searching for that content is devastating to me. And that's why I'm glad you're here - whatever your relationship to this new mama, you're going to make her day memorable *for her.*

So let's get to it! The best Mother's Day gift ideas for first-time mamas! Logically, I've separated my first Mother's Day gift ideas into physical gift ideas and experience gift ideas, so if you're short on time and looking for a quick gift, scroll to the end of the list.

Want to cut to the chase? Check out our Best Selling Mother's Day gifts:

A Few Things to Keep in Mind, When Shopping for a first Mother's Day gift:

Before we get started, after the success of this little warning section in Christmas Gift Ideas for Adult Children, I thought I'd offer a few high-level suggestions when you're shopping for Mother's Day gifts for a first-time new mom, which can be, to put it mildly, a bit of a minefield.

Don't ask mom to do the work for you

Being a new mom is hard for many reasons. And one of the very well-documented reasons for the difficulty is that mom is carrying the weight of making one million decisions each and every, single day, not to mention keeping the entire family's ever-fluctuating schedule, mostly in your mind.

Figuring out what her own perfect gift for Mother's Day shouldn't be something that *mom* has to add to her lengthy to-do list.

Sure!  Ask mom what she wants. And if she says "I don't know," then you figure it out for her! Do not keep asking. Of course, you've already taken the dive by ending up on this blog - so I have faith in you.

Don't make your gift another chore for mom

And on that same note, if you're giving the new mom in your life any sort of experience or event, you need to actually book the event and arrange babysitting.

Giving a new mamas a hypothetical "date night" that you don't plan is basically not getting her a gift at all. She's a busy new mom and I cannot let you make her busier.

Get your first-time mom a gift that's actual for *her*

Gifts for baby are great. Baby clothes are great. Commemorative gifts are great. And feel free to get those for baby. But mom has already gotten a lot of those gifts this year. And she's been working her booty off. Mom needs and deserves a Mother's Day gift, too. She doesn't want a new diaper bag.

Mom needs a gift that is *just for mom.*

Bonus points for gifts that save time or take things off mom's plate.

End of story.

First Mothers Day Gift Ideas

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
LAKE Pajamas

After months of weird, ultra-stretchy maternity pajamas, followed by even more months of spit-up-covered pajamas (well, spit-up-covered everything), I made a special splurge and bought myself some LAKE pajamas, after seeing them promoted online for months. I was definitely not disappointed. I'm a fancy pajama convert, and I'm sure I won't be going back to my old sorority t-shirts anytime soon.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
A Keurig Coffee Maker

Coffee makers with messy filters and pots are a thing of the past. Invest in a Keurig and the new mom can make a single cup of coffee when she actually has time to drink it, without making a giant mess.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Stemless Wine Glasses

No glass of wine ever tasted so good as the first glass of champagne when we got home from the hospital! And no wine glass ever crashed to the floor and broke as quickly...Admit defeat, and celebrate mom's return to wine with some nice, stemless wine glasses for after baby goes to bed.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Spa Day

Why not treat mom to some real pampering by the professionals, on a special day at the spa? Spa gift cards are a perfect first Mother's Day gift, and easy to grab if you're short on time.
Be sure to: Invest in a large enough gift card to cover a few spa services. And, if you can, check her calendar. Schedule it. Book a sitter. That last bit is key.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Dyson Hair Dryer

Mom needs to save all the time she can. Especially in these early days, squeezing in any form of basic hygiene can be difficult, though of course it is the key to starting to feel "normal" again! Saving time getting dressed is one of the easiest (and most thoughtful!) ways to help out a new mom.

My husband actually bought me this amazing Dyson hair dryer during the pandemic and I've become a believer. Not only does it dry my hair in 1/4 of the time, it also makes my hair shinier and more manageable. Can't ask for more than that.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Mommy & Me Hill House Dresses

The season's trendiest dress has a baby version for mom's mini me! With a forgiving bodice and voluminous skirt, Hill House's "nap dresses" are on-trend, comfortable, and forgiving for a new mama's new figure.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Molton Brown Lotion

I can promise you that all that hand washing after baby diaper changes is taking its toll. Upgrade the new mom's lotion game with Molton Brown.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Luxury Bubble Bath

In the unlikely event that mama has enough time for a bubble bath, you'd might as well make it worth her while. I loved the luxury bubble bath I got- it was a great first Mother's Day gift!

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas: Personalized book

I actually bought this personalized parent/child book from librio for my husband for his first Father's Day, and we absolutely adore it. You are able to personalize the book not only with names, but also with the likeness of parent and kiddo, adjusting hair cut and color, etc.

No one can get through this book without dry eyes, and it doesn't just sit on the shelf. We find ourselves coming back to our new favorite book over and over.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Birthstone Jewelry

A birthstone necklace, bracelet or ring is a classic first Mother's Day gift. And it doesn't have to be goofy-looking. Poke around for some tasteful options - I've rounded up a few below.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
First Mother's Day Shirts

"Mama" "Mimi" "In My Mom Era" are a few of the favorites to commemorate mom's new title, for the first time in shirt form. Try Etsy for affordable, personalizable new mom shirts.

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas: Photo gifts

Pick a favorite photo and have it framed quickly and easily on Shutterfly.

Have a little more time on your hands? Take the heavy lift of creating an actual, personalized photo album, also on Shutterfly. We've used those photo books to commemorate many a big milestone, from our honeymoon, to our first year with out little one.

Thoughtful gifts are the best gifts!

First Mother's Day Gift Ideas:
Experiences

First Mother Day Gift/Event Idea:
Schedule a family portrait

Even we, the most reticent of family photography subjects, were so happy to memorialize our first year as a family of 3 (well, 4 counting Joey), with family portraits. Find a photographer, and schedule the photo shoot for a Sunday afternoon.

Give mom enough runway time to pick out the outfits she wants for everyone, but do as much of it for her as you can. After sleepless nights, the last thing mom wants to do is deal with scheduling this, but you know it's on her to do list.

First Mother Day Gift/Event Idea:
Plan a date night

Drinks and dinner? Make the reservation, schedule the babysitter - all the new mom has to do is show up and enjoy! Buy gift certificates to a favorite restaurant and the local cinema.

First Mother Day Gift/Event Idea:
Plan a romantic weekend or family trip

Even better than a date night, how about a romantic weekend away or a trip for the whole family. The scheduling is key - don't make it another item to add to the new mom's to-do list, when what she really wants is much-needed rest.

First Mother Day Gift/Event Idea:
Book a cleaner

Speaking of much-needed rest, good housekeeping is certainly one of the many things stressing new parents out during the day and eating away at her weekends. Book a one-time or recurring house keeper to deep clean the house so mom can focus on her new bundle of joy.

Thanks for stopping by!

I hope I gave you some thoughtful gift ideas for a first-time mom's first Mother's Day. As a very recent first-time mother myself, I can guarantee the mom in your life will appreciate any and all gifts and effort you put into her special day. As long as your heart's in the right place, you can't go wrong.

Have a wonderful time celebrating on her first Mother's Day! But, don't you dare let her change a diaper.
