What is a good Christmas present for a pregnant woman?
I've been told over the years by a few reliable sources that one of the hardest people to buy for on Santa's list is pregnant women, and I'll admit I know understand it.
From taking most of the gifts we'd have usually received for Christmas (alcohol and alcohol-related items, clothes that'll fit for more than a week, luxury travel gear) off the table, to add an overwhelming list of things I "need" to the ether, it's difficult to know where to start when buying a gift for an expecting mom.
So, as a person who was very newly pregnant at Christmas, and very ill, I've rounded up a few thoughts on the best gift ideas for pregnant women, including tips, tricks, and pressure points to avoid when shopping for your pregnant wife/daughter/friend.
{2025} Tips for shopping for a pregnant woman
Let's walk through a few tips before you begin shopping for your pregnant wife, friend, daughter, or daughter-in-law! Want to cut to the chase? Here's my round-up of gift ideas for expectant moms:
Remember the trimester
No matter how excited everyone is about baby, please remember to always be mindful of where a woman is in her pregnancy. If it's very, very early, it might be safest to stick with a non-pregnancy specific gift, such as perfume or a nice candle, to avoid putting the cart before the horse. Similarly, if she's nearly done, it might be wasteful to buy her a bunch of maternity clothes.
It's not the time to send a message, intentional or not
A Christmas gift for a pregnant woman is not the avenue to give items that come with baggage. Don't buy her clothes "for after the baby," which she likely won't fit into or items for breastfeeding or any other "political" topic unless you know her opinion on it. When in doubt, keep it light.
A note on baby clothes
Everybody loves clothes for the new baby, and, of course first-time moms welcome them. Just a couple things to keep in mind. First, don't forget to get mom a gift as well. A gift for baby technically isn't a gift for mom. Second, keep in mind when the baby will actually be born and how quickly they grow. Don't buy a 3-6 month snow suit for a baby who will be born in April. And, as we've discussed regarding trimesters, if someone told you 2 weeks ago that they're 9 weeks pregnant, I might suggest not bombarding them with a ton of baby clothes until we get a little closer to the big event.
Careful with hand me downs
As we've learned more about keeping infants safe, pediatricians' guidance for parents has changed as well. For example, "safe sleep" requirements likely mean that we now understand that an antique crib could pose a risk to baby's safety. Older toys may have been determined to contain dangerous chemicals. It's not a commentary on how things were done in the past or a judgment on your parenting or upbringing. It's doing better now that we know better.
Non-pregnancy clothes are tricky
With the exception of jewelry (always a good idea), buying pregnant woman non-maternity clothes for Christmas can be tough. It's hard to know when, if at all, she'll be wearing the size she wore before baby, and, most women carry weight differently after baby. So, a pre-baby sized piece of clothing may feel like a to-do, or just a waste, if she isn't able to wear it later. Something that isn't sized, like jewlery or a hat is a better non-maternity bet.
Always include a receipt
Pregnant women and new moms are fortunate to receive a lot of gifts! Don't forget to include a receipt - just in case we have duplicates!
{2025} Gift Ideas for Pregnant Women:Slip-on shoes
I became obsessed with slip-on sneakers from Kizik when I was pregnant and I've continued to wear them after. Whether your gift recipient is tired, too big to bend over, or, down the road, rushing out the door after a kiddo, slip-on sneakers will make her life so much easier. And they don't have to be perfunctory or utilitarian. Kiziks are cute and I see tons of moms my age wearing them.
Pregnancy essentials
Pregnancy can be tough. And a few products can make it easier and more comfortable!
Something special just for her
No matter what else you get, don't forget to get her something that's just for her that she can use outside of baby, like a piece of jewelry or perfume.
Luxury Baby Gear
While I'm going to very strongly advise you against getting a pregnant mama diapers for Christmas (unless she has SPECIFICALLY asked for practical baby supplies), luxury baby products she wants can be a fun Christmas splurge.
Box or Journal for Memories
While it may be hard to wrap your head around it in the moment, she'll want to remember this time - a Petite Keep box or daily journal can help!
Relaxation & Self-Care
Bubble bath, lotion, manicure gift cards, slippers - something to help her take care of herself!
Pregnancy subscription box
Bump Box offers one-time and monthly subscription boxes for expectant moms!
