Post updated October, 2024. Looking for a new British detective series?Good news! You've come to the right place. Your favourite Anglophile is always up-to-date on the most recent comings and goings of British TV streaming "across the pond." If you need me, I'm generally sneaking in an episode during nap time/when I finally get my break in the evening. Sometimes with a cup of Fortnum and Mason tea... The Chelsea DetectiveI cannot recommend The Chelsea Detective highly enough. In the vein of Vera, Shetland, and C.B. Strike, it's a compelling partner-based detective drama following a lovable DI and his younger DS as they navigate crime in London and, of course, their personal lives. Dedicated Midsomer Murders fans will recognize Adrian Scarborough as a three-time Midsomer resident. Now he takes the reins as DI Max Arnold in The Chelsea Detective, solving high-end crimes in the wealthiest part of London. Murder in ProvenceBased on the book series by ML Longworth, Murder in Provence stars veteran British actors Roger Allam and Nancy Caroll (who you may recognize from Endeavour and Father Brown, respectively) as paramours turned co-investigators in the stunning southern French town of Provence. The show is in English and the actors are your favorite 'usual suspects.' GraceAnother classic partner-based and episodic classic British detective series, Grace, Season 3 is streaming now. Following the scrupulously straight-forward Roy Grace, John Simm gives an excellent performance as a detective balancing his career against the demands of his personal life, including the as-yet unsolved disappearance of his wife. For fans of Endeavor, the two shows share the same creator, though I don't know how many similarities I see. The Long CallThe Long Call is another adaptation of a book, though this one is opened and closed in one season. DI Matthew Venn returns to his hometown and the extreme religious sect he's been trying to forget about since he left home. Adapted from a book by Vera and Shetland author Ann Cleaves, The Long Call has a similar eerie, earthy vibe that's sure to keep you guessing. Fans of George Gently will happily recognize one of the main characters. DalglieshDalgliesh follows the titular detective as he recovers from the loss of his wife and baby, solving crimes in 1970's England. We just have one season out now - with each mystery (based on a book) spanning two episodes. Two seasons are currently available. Signora VolpeSignora Volpe follows the exploits of Sylvia Fox (Emilia Fox), and MI6 agent who, after traveling to Italy for her niece's wedding, decides to make a go of it in Umbria. Expect beautiful scenery and lots of fun spy gimmicks. C.B. StrikeWith the next installment about to premiere, C.B. Strike is the screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling's successful detective duo series, featuring Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott. Centered around a 'will-they-won't-they' that drives the series, the duo solve a series of mysteries that blend the posh and the macabre. The TowerEntering its third season, The Tower follows DS Sara Collins (Gemma Whelan) as she navigates internal MET politics and gritty London crimes. More of a police thriller than a "detective" show, it's an engaging watch, though not as "Agatha" as most of the others on this list. Coming soon: LudwigI am on the edge of my seat waiting for Ludwig to make it to us "across the pond." Staring David Mitchell (of Peep Show fame), Ludwig follows the exploits of John Taylor, as he impersonates his police officer brother in an attempt to solve his disappearance. Keep an eye on JustWatch.com! Thanks for stopping by!I so hope you enjoy these new British detective series! Didn't find something you want to stream? I've got lots more suggestions for my fellow Anglophiles: Love it? Pin it!
