Wondering what to wear in Europe? After more Europe trips than I can count, I’ve realized it’s much simpler than it seems—and these are the outfits that actually work for real travel days.

Wondering what to wear in Europe?

If you’re planning a trip to Europe, figuring out what to wear can feel oddly overwhelming.
You want to be comfortable. You know you’ll be walking a lot. And at the same time, you don’t want to feel completely out of place.
After more trips than I can count, I’ve realized it’s actually much simpler than it seems.
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe, and you definitely don’t need to overthink it. Much of what you'll need is probably already in your closet.
This is exactly what I wear in Europe, and what I recommend if you just want things to work.

What to Wear in Europe: My Simple Formula

When I’m packing for Europe, I stick to a very simple formula. It’s not complicated, and that’s the point.
  • 2–3 comfortable tops
  • 2 bottoms (jeans, pants, or a long skirt)
  • 1–2 dresses
  • 1 sweater or light layer
  • 1 jacket
  • 2 pairs of shoes
That’s it.

Everything should mix and match, and everything should be something you actually want to wear for a full day of walking.

What my formula looks like in practice...let's build some Europe travel outfits ->

This is where I've found most people make this harder than it needs to be, but in reality, most of my outfits in Europe look very similar, and that's just fine.

A few go-to combinations I always come back to:
  • Linen pants + a simple tank + sneakers + sweater
  • A midi dress + supportive sandals
  • Jeans + a t-shirt + a blazer or light jacket
  • Non-denim pants + a lightweight sweater + flats
Nothing here is particularly groundbreaking, but that’s why it works. These are outfits you can wear all day, walk in comfortably, and still feel put together. I'm adding an easy, pickpocket-proof leather crossbody to all of these, to feel polished.

If you want to see the exact pieces I wear for these kinds of outfits, I’ve linked them all here →

Packing shoes for Europe...you'll want to get this part right

If there’s one thing that can make or break your Europe trip, it’s your walking shoe selection.
You’ll be walking far more than you expect, often on uneven, cobblestone streets, and sometimes for hours at a time. The wrong shoes can genuinely ruin your long-awaited exploration day.
I usually bring:
  • A comfortable pair of sneakers
  • Boots/booties
  • A simple flat or loafer, depending on the time of year

Layering makes everything easier

Europe weather is rarely as predictable as you want it to be.
Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm, and evenings chilly again. Add in flights, trains, and different climates, and layering becomes essential.

I always pack:
  • A lightweight sweater
  • A jacket (depending on the season)
  • Sometimes a trench or wrap for travel days
It’s one of those things that makes your entire wardrobe more flexible.

How my Europe travel outfit formula varies by country

The overall formula stays the same, but there are a few small differences depending on where you’re going.
  • Paris: slightly more polished, simple and classic pieces
→ What to Wear in Paris
  • Italy: lighter fabrics, more dresses, a bit more relaxed
→ What to Wear in Italy
  • Spain: easy, breathable pieces that still feel put together
→ What to Wear in Spain
  • London: more layers and practical outfits for changing weather
→ What to Wear in London
You don’t need completely different wardrobes for each place. It’s more about small adjustments.

What NOT to Wear in Europe

Most packing mistakes come down to a few simple things:
  • Shoes that cause blisters and wreck your walking plans
  • Overly casual/athletic outfits that make you stand out
  • Bags that are too large or inviting to pickpockets
  • Not dressing for the weather

I go into much more detail here → What NOT to Wear in Europe
And specifically for flights → What NOT to Wear on a Plane

What to Wear on a Flight to Europe

Your travel day outfit matters more than people think.
You want to be comfortable, but also prepared for long hours, temperature changes, and moving through airports.
I usually stick to:
  • Soft, comfortable layers
  • Shoes that are easy to walk in
  • A practical bag that keeps everything accessible
