{2025} The Simple Long Flight Outfit Formula: 6+ Easy Tips

To make things as simple as possible, I've created an easy formula you can use to craft your long haul flight outfit. Round up these six essentials, and you're ready for any long flight.

1. Classy, Comfortable Walking Shoes

With a long flight outfit, as with any travel outfit, the most important element you'll pick is your comfortable shoes. Leave the high heels at home (why do ads always show women wearing high heels on planes?), and opt for a clean, trendy pair of sneakers, or a pair of boots/booties.

No matter what shoes you pick, be sure you wear socks. Overnight on a long flight, the plane, especially near the floor, gets a bit chilly. I promise you'll regret wearing loafers with no socks, at 2 AM over the Atlantic.

Pro tip: If you're wearing sneakers with a logo, make sure the logo color ties into another item you're wearing. This makes your outfit look polished.

FAQ: Should I bring flip flops for my long haul flight?

Some people like to bring flip flops to wear on the airplane during a long haul flight, for walking around the plane and visiting the airplane bathroom. Obviously, you should not be barefoot at anytime during your flight.

Personally, I'd never remove my sneakers on a flight and I don't want to bother with bringing additional shoes. Additionally, this is your first of several reminders that Europeans dress differently from Americans. There's really no point bringing flip flops to Europe, as they aren't appropriate to wear in Europe, even in the summer.

FAQ: Should I wear a pair of compression socks on my long haul flight?

For long travel days and longer flights, many people wear compression socks. Compression socks help with blood circulation, and that increased blood flow has been shown to decrease the risk of blood clots/deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If you are at risk for these conditions or prone to swelling, compression socks could be a fit for you!

As many of you know, I have rheumatoid arthritis, so I have a few pairs. They are quite tight, so I'd bring a pair of normal socks, in case you find the compression socks too uncomfortable. Speak with your doctor before your trip, if you have concerns or questions.

2. Loose (but not sloppy!) Pants

Now we've got shoes covered, we'll move onto a few pieces of comfortable clothes for your long flight.
Given how much you'll be sitting, not to mention trying to sleep, the right pants go a long way to making you comfortable during a long flight. Avoid anything with an extremely tight waistband, stick to breathable materials, and think carefully about whether you want to wear jeans. Loose-fitting jeans, relaxed fit jeans should be fine, but even beyond reasons of style, a pair of really tight skinny jeans simply isn't going to be the right choice for a long flight. No one wants to feel like they're being squeezed for 8 hours.

Want to make it easy, opt for a matching set as your base layer.

What about leggings / yoga pants? If you dress them up, you can "get away" with wearing leggings on a long flight. If you are heading to Europe, just make sure your top is long enough to cover your booty, as Europeans don't wear 'leggings as pants' like Americans do. I'd recommend joggers or 'travel pants'- they're less restrictive than jeans, they tend not to wrinkle, but they are 'actual pants' so you won't feel under dressed.

I've rounded up a few of the best pants for long flights, if you need suggestions!

3. Thoughtful Base Layer

For the base layer on the top, it's a good idea to go with an easy t-shirt or long-sleeved top for a long plane ride. As we discussed, a matching set works well too.

4. A Light Outer Layer

Just a t-shirt is not going to be warm enough on a long flight, particularly not if the flight is overnight. Include a cardigan, lightweight jacket, or sweatshirt (no logos please) to add style and warmth.

FAQ: Should I bring my coat with me on a long haul flight?

No! I always pack my winter coat in my checked luggage. There's nowhere convenient to put a bulky coat during a long flight, if you end up not having space in the overhead compartment. That said, if you're in First Class, they'll hang your coat up for you, so go for it.

5. Blanket Scarf

As we've discussed, it gets chilly over the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of the night! I'd include one extra layer to use as a scarf/wrap/blanket during your travels. You'll also look chic AF. The scarf/wrap/blanket is the best friend of classy travel ladies everywhere. I tend to go for a washable merino wool. Washable being the key adjective - you'll definitely want to throw it in the washing machine when you get home!

6. Chic Tote

Looking for the best bag to take with you on your long flight? For me, the reality is I'm going to need easy access to...lots of stuff. All my stuff. So, though I never recommend a tote bag for actual tourism days exploring Europe or any large city (too bulky and too easy for pickpockets), a tote is a great option for a long flight. Throw your travel pillow, eye mask, phone, headphones, water bottle, book, and any other in-flight essentials into your tote, slap it on top of your carry-on bag, and you're on your way! If I'm going to Europe, I just include the small crossbody that I'll carry daily in Europe as my "wallet" within my tote, rather than bringing another bag in my bag.

While there is no guarantee, there does tend to be more overhead space on long flights. If you think you're going to want to store your bag in the overhead bin, get a tote that zips so your bag doesn't spill its contents.

I personally like to keep my tote under the seat in front of me so I can access it whenever I like. I have a lot of stuff and I'm always wanting to dig through my bag.

Bonus: Classy Carry-On Bag

And, finally, don't forget a cute carry-on bag. Don't let a ratty, old falling apart carry-on spoil your long flight outfit. A cute bag doesn't have to cost a fortune, but if you're looking to invest, a carry-on bag is a great place to do it.

Thanks for Stopping By!

I hope I gave you some outfit idea for your next long-haul flight! International flights don't have to be stressful - just remember - you're on vacation! I agree with all ur chic suggestions - except the tote. I personally prefer a small cross body bag, for phone, earbuds, passport, tissues, sanitiser & lip balm. I take a small lightweight wheely cabin bag for additional layers & change of clothes if I’m doing a really long haul (AUS to UK is usually bout 30 hrs with a pit stop in Singspore or Dubai), where I have a shower & change in the lounge. Personal choice - I just don’t like big bulky bags, and shoulder bag is not a safe option.
