Considering a luxury carry-on suitcase purchase? Here’s my honest review of the Gibraltar Aluminum 20" Carry-On from LEVEL8 — my first aluminum hard-shell suitcase.

Wondering if you should invest in a LEVEL8 carry-on?

Level8 Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On
Over my many years of traveling, both domestically and internationally, as a travel blogger with a few miles under my belt, my suitcase expenditures have steadily crept up.

From the circa 2005 Costco suitcases my parents bought me in high school, to a rotating cast of TJ Maxx luggage that never survived more than two trips across the pond, to finally taking the plunge and investing in higher-end options.

Like all frequent travelers, I've had suitcases gate-checked without warning, jammed into tiny overhead compartments, and I've dragged them on and off trains across Europe and the UK.

I ask a lot of my luggage.

“It’s expensive to be cheap,” as my grandfather used to say.
And, as with so many other things, I’ve come to learn he was right.

The $459 Gibraltar Carry-On from LEVEL8 is one of the more expensive suitcases I’ve used.

Well... consider me a convert.

My Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On 20" arrived earlier this week, and I was immediately impressed. It’s sturdy without being clunky, elegant but not flashy, and durable and practical, while simultaneously...classy.

So let’s dive into my review. I’ll walk through FAQs about LEVEL8, highlight what I look for in a carry-on, and then get into what I love (and the one thing I don’t) about the Gibraltar.

Frequently Asked Questions  about LEVEL8's new aluminum carry-on

Will the Level8 Gibraltar Carry-On fit in the overhead bin?
Yes! At 20 inches, the Gibraltar is designed to meet most domestic and international carry-on size requirements, and is actually a couple inches smaller than the average 22" carry-on. You’ll have no trouble storing it in overhead bins, and it’s compact enough to wheel easily through airports, train stations, and even across my beloved cobblestone European streets.

Is aluminum luggage too heavy for Europe travel?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that aluminum cases are heavier than polycarbonate. The Gibraltar weighs about 10 pounds empty and is actually made of an aerospace-grade aluminum-magnesium alloy.

That said, I found it manageable — and I’m fairly petite, with minimal upper body strength. I can still lift it above my head with no issue (yes, that was the first thing I tried when it showed up).

The extra weight gives the suitcase a certain... gravitas. And in return, you get significantly stronger protection for your belongings, and a suitcase made of an incredibly durable material.

Will the aluminum shell scratch?
A little, yes. Like all aluminum luggage, the Gibraltar will pick up scuffs and small dings over time — from overhead compartments and sneaky curbs. Personally, I don’t mind it. If anything, it gives the suitcase a well-traveled look, and I feel a bit like a pilot.

LEVEL8 does offer a lifetime warranty on the structural components (like the shell, wheels, handles, and zippers), but not for cosmetic wear and tear, like scratches.

Does the Gibraltar come with packing cubes?
Yes, the Gibraltar comes with packing cubes—and they’re surprisingly good packing cubes. The suitcase includes four matching fabric packing cubes: one large, one medium, and two smaller.

My favorite feature? Each cube has removable image labels (like a tiny makeup icon or electronics symbol), so you can see what’s inside at a glance — no unzipping necessary. Genius.

Is LEVEL8 luggage worth the price?

If you’re after something durable, thoughtfully designed, and genuinely impressive, LEVEL8 makes a strong case (pun intended, again). The Gibraltar is made from aerospace-grade aluminum, with smooth spinner wheels, dual TSA locks, and its own $50 set of packing cubes included. It’s definitely a splurge, but if you travel often — or want to gift someone who does — it’s a solid investment.

Qualities I Look for in a Carry-On Bag

When I shop for carry-on luggage, here’s what matters most to me:
  • Durability
  • 360° spinner wheels (non-negotiable, especially for international travel)
  • A design that stands out just enough — I want to spot it easily in the crowd
  • A neutral color that works with whatever I’m wearing when I travel (no logos, please)

Gibraltar Carry-On:
What I Love

Sleek, Minimalist Design
The first thing that struck me about the Gibraltar was its matte aluminum finish. It’s visually clean, but definitely makes a statement. This would make a very impressive gift for someone who loves to travel. The Gibraltar actually does come in different colors. Mine is the "silver." There's also a grey with a matte finish that's significantly darker ("Grey").

Comfortable to Wheel
The wide handle is a big win — especially for someone like me, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis. Even though it’s a compact carry-on, the height felt comfortable when wheeling it, and the flat top made it easy to rest my tote bag securely.

Incredibly Durable
It doesn’t get more solid than aluminum. While it might pick up small scratches, it will absolutely protect your things.

No Zipper = No Risk of Rips
The Gibraltar opens with two secure locks instead of a zipper that runs the perimeter, like you're used to in most luggage pieces. That means fewer failure points — and no wrestling with broken zippers. You can also close the locks without setting a code, so if you’re worried about locking yourself out, or just not wanting to mess with locks every time, don’t be. It's more of just a buckle.

Includes High-End Packing Cubes

I am really impressed with LEVEL8's packing cubes (and I'm a packing cube aficionado). Each packing cube has a velcro spot where you can place removable image labels.  For example, there's one that has a depiction of make-up, so if I put my make up in that one, I know what's in there without having to open it each time. They make organizing (and remembering what’s where) so much easier. Since LEVEL8 sells these cubes separately for $50, it’s a nice added value.

One Con to Consider

Slightly Heavier Than Other Carry-Ons
There’s no getting around it — aluminum is a heavier material than the polycarbonate you're probably used to on a hard-shell suitcase.
The Gibraltar weighs a bit more than my previous carry-ons.

That said, it’s not unwieldy and actually not nearly as heavy as I expected it to be. If anything, the durability, high quality, and thoughtful design outweigh the extra pound or two.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a new suitcase that holds up beautifully trip after trip — and has a more elevated feel than your average hard-shell carry-on — the Gibraltar Aluminum 20" Carry-On is a great choice.

I’m so grateful to LEVEL8 for sending me the Gibraltar. I'll be bringing my new bag on our upcoming anniversary trip to New York City, and I already know it's a carry-on I’ll reach for again and again.
