Packing for a trip to NYC this Winter?

Well, pack your cozy ear coverings, winter coat, and waterproof shoes because we're packing for a trip to NYC for the holidays! New Yorkers seem to be able to power through those intense New York City winters without missing a beat, and I'm going to teach you how to do the same! Whether it's your first time or your fifth, whether you're spending time in Times Square or the Upper East Side, I'll get you set up with everything you need for winter in NYC.

Winter months are actually a great time to visit NYC, especially around the holidays. It'll be a different visit from the more 'traditional' tourist times (summer/fall). If you do visit for Christmas/NYE, you can expect a significant crowd spike, for the holiday events. I visited once in January for a conference of my husband's, and I can confirm the crowds had dispersed and the snow had arrived!

Frequently Asked Questions about Packing for NYC in Winter

What is winter like in New York City?
Winter in NYC is cold. With an average high in January around 40 and an average low around 27, but the colder months can have bad weather spells with much lower temps, even lower wind chill, and significant slow fall.

What do people wear in NYC in the winter?
Depending on the neighborhood you're visiting, you'll see winter essentials in various shapes and sizes. But the universal elements will be hats, gloves, scarves, waterproof boots, and the heaviest winter coats.

What should I wear to a Broadway show in NYC?
You're in luck! I've written an entire post on this topics, as a Broadway lover (we see two shows whenever we visit)!

The best winter coat you've got

A heavy coat is going to be your best friend during winter in NYC. As far as what you should pick for your outer later, you'll see any and ever warm coat on the streets of NYC. Puffer jackets, tailored wool coat, long wool coats, or even a faux fur coat are all great options, depending on your personal style. I spend a lot of my 'winter in Europe' posts lecturing Americans about how they don't need their Canada Goose in many parts of Europe in winter. That's not the case here! Bring whatever your warmest coat is. A down parka or puffer coat will definitely do the trick. I'd skip the vests, barn coats, or unlined Boucle or wool lighter coats.

Cozy sweaters
And under that coat, you're going to want a selection of warm sweaters. I'd include a few options, including a chunky knit sweater or two, a turtleneck, and some of my favorite - a nicer merino wool or cashmere sweater for any nicer events.

These boots are made for walking
What sort of travel blogger would I be if I allowed you to ruin your trip with bad footwear! At least one pair of boots is a MUST, no matter how happy the forecast looks for your trip. Personally, I'd bring two pairs of boots. One knee-high waterproof pair, and one pair of snow boots. If you're feeling really confident about the no snow, you could replace the snow boots with Chelsea boots. If you have evening plans, make sure one pair of your boots is event appropriate. If you're visiting for a short trip and are 100% sure the pavement doesn't have residual snow, sneakers would be fine, but I really wouldn't bank on wearing sneakers, as snow can linger for quite a long time (and get very, very dirty during that time).

FAQ: Should I wear UGGs for winter in NYC?
No. UGGs, while great, have no foot support for walking longer distances and, most importantly, are not even water-resistant, let alone waterproof. After 2 blocks, your UGG-clad feet will be completely waterlogged and your feet will be freezing. You need actual winter snow boots, or, if it's not snowing, water resistant knee-high boots.
Chic scarves...warm scarves
If you end up navigating one of those classic NYC wind tunnels, you're going to be thankful for a warm scarf. I'd also bring a "pretty" scarf for Broadway/evening events.

A few thoughts on pants & jeans
I'd opt for a pair of jeans or two for day-to-day wear. Make sure they accommodate your boots before your trip.

Thick leggings
Fleece-lined tights or thermal leggings are the name of the game if you're going to be sporting a tunic or dress during your New York trip. Yes, you can 'wear leggings as pants,' but yes, you will freeze your you-know-what off in a pair of Lululemon Aligns.
Cold weather accessories
No NYC winter packing list would be complete without good gloves, a warm hat, and wool socks.
