Having just returned from our first Disney cruise, I thought I'd round-up the items I'm glad I brought...and what I'd leave on shore on our next trip!

Lucky you! After many, many trips to Walt Disney World and Disney Land, we decided to take our love of Disney on the high seas and sail away on our first cruise! Character meets, princess tea, pool days, private islands...what more could you want for your next Disney adventure?
We recently returned from a 5-night Caribbean cruise on the Disney Fantasy. Not that I've finally unpacked, I'd love to take a minute to share all of my thoughts on Disney cruise essentials, to help you pack for yourself and your family on your next Disney cruise! What to Think About Before You Pack For Your Disney Cruise
1. Multiple outfit changes per day
Unlike a trip to Disney World, where you're generally going to wear the same outfit all day, most days, since you're going to spend most of your day at the pool/beach, you'll generally wear at least one, maybe even two or three outfits per day. 2. Warm weather v. air conditioned ship Especially for a Caribbean cruise, the transition in and outside can be a little tricky. I didn't find the ship to be inordinately cold, but inside you definitely will want to cover up a bit. Additionally, even outside on the ship, when it's moving, it can be surprisingly chilly. 3. Dressing for Dinners You'll definitely want to bring 'dinner outfits.' While you "can" wear most things (no wet bathing suits, etc.), to dinner, I did find that most people dressed up slightly and cleaned up before dinner, more so than in Disney World. 4. Pool essentials This was my first Disney cruise and we spent much more time swimming than I expected. You'll want swim gear (and cover ups!) for all, and maybe even two suits for your little fish if, like mine, they have strong objections to putting on a wet suit. 5. Port days and private islands Our 5-night Fantasy cruise stopped at Disney's Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and Disney Castaway Cay (the private island). We also stopped in Nassau our first day, though only my husband went to explore. For the private islands, you'll want to bring a collapsible beach bag to carry everything your family will need for the day. Even at Castaway Cay (which has the easier walk from the ship), you have to go through some passport control, and walk/tram to get to the beach. You can go back to your stateroom if you needed to, but you really would want to avoid that. Additionally, while there are shops and included restaurants when you're off the ship, the options are fairly limited. For example, at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, the lunch wasn't served until 11:15 on the Sunday we visited. My daughter was hungry, and I came to find that you can't even buy a granola bar. So anyway, they're just a little more 'remote' than I expected. 6. Suitcase storage in your stateroom As in Disney World, our suitcases, once unpacked, could slide under our bed (yay!), but, of course staterooms are small, so try to jam as much as possible into as few suitcases as possible (as if I'm telling you something you don't already know!) 7. Fun Disney add-ons are *essential* Disney cruises are FUN FUN FUN. Pirate Night outfits, door decor, and little 'pixie dust' gifts are part of the enjoyment! So don't forget the fun.

What to Pack in a Family Ship Carry-On: What You’ll Want Immediately
First-time cruiser here. We stayed at the Hyatt in Orlando, left our bags in the room with their tags, and Disney transported them to our stateroom for us. Wonderful perk. That said, on embarkation day, those teams are transporting a lot of bags and once you are separated from your bag, you simply do not know when it will show up. We had the wonderful opportunity to stay in a Concierge suite, and our bags didn't arrive until after we'd returned from the first dinner serving.
You will want to take a carry-on or even a tote bag with you that includes the items you will need during that first day. That could include:
My Basic Disney Cruise Daily Outfit Formula
1. Morning
In the mornings, to grab coffee, do a quick walk around the walking track, etc., I'd generally wear a tennis skirt/dress and sneakers. That said, I'd wear this outfit for so little time that I was able to rewear, unlike in Disney World, where you're obviously drenched in sweat and not rewearing anything! 2. Beach/pool time For the stops at beaches or just visiting the pool on the day at sea or the day we didn't disembark at Nassau, we'd then switch over to our suits and cover-ups (and sun hats - key). Even kiddos need cover-ups if you are going to grab lunch that requires going in somewhere, even Cabana's on the pool deck, on our ship. This surprised me, as a first time cruiser. 3. Dinner Everyone showers and gets dressed for dinner after a long day of swimming. Unlike in Disney World, I found that people looked 'nicer' at dinner than I expected. There is also a 'formal night' where women wore sundresses, etc. Still very beachy/casual, but just a little extra effort, and, I'm told, less 'formal' than on other cruises (but I don't know personally, as this is my first!)
What is rotational dining on a Disney cruise?
Disney Cruise Line puts a fair amount of emphasis on its dinner offering - 'rotational dining.' Each night, you'll see in your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app which 'rotational' dining restaurant you're assigned to that evening (our ship had 3, so we repeated two of them). Your waitstaff will follow you to each restaurant, which is a wonderful Disney perk! It's a sit-down dinner, but you'll order from a menu (you can order as many items as you'd like). Service is quick and kid-friendly. You do have to pay for alcohol at dinner. What should I wear to dinner on a Disney cruise? Unlike in Disney World, where most people are hitting dinner after a long day at the parks and likely before staying in the parks for fireworks, etc., people do tend to 'dress up' "cruise casual" for even the rotational dining in the main dining rooms on the cruise, as they've been at the beach/pool all day and need to shower before dinner anyway (and aren't doing any big walking afterwards). I generally wore a casual dress and comfortable shoes (no dress shoes, jackets, button-down shirts for men, etc.). There is one 'dress-up' night where people looked slightly nicer, but nothing formal. At the higher-end restaurants, like Palo Steakhouse, people will look even nicer. Can I wear jeans to dinner on a Disney cruise? Yes, you can wear jeans to dinner on a Disney cruise, though, depending on the time of year, you may be extremely hot. What should I wear for Pirate Night on a Disney cruise? People really go all out for the themed nights on these cruises! My daughter wore a full pirate Halloween costume and fit right in. I bought Pirate Mickey ears, and my husband wore a Pirates Hawaiian shirt and tricorn hat. I also saw adults in full pirate costumes. I would say 90% of people were wearing *something* fun. So wear what you feel comfortable in, and enjoy! They will leave a pirate bandanas in your room on the morning of Pirate Night, so even if you forget, you'll have something to wear! What can't you bring on a Disney cruise?
I was surprised how many items are forbidden on Disney cruises. As a corporate lawyer, obviously I understand - but be sure to check the list of items that are prohibited on Disney Cruise Line, to save yourself a headache. The one that surprised me most was clothes steamer. They've also imposed new carry-on alcohol rules, if you're attempting to bring your own. You can bring toy pirate swords! What purse should I bring on a Disney cruise?
Either a crossbody 'belt bag' or leather/canvas crossbody with a longer strap should work perfectly. I wore my Arden Cove Crissy, a pickpocket-proof purse that I got for Europe travel. While I wasn't worried about pickpocketing on the ship itself or the Disney private island, we did stop in Nassau, so I figured I'd make it my purse for the whole trip. It worked well. It was nice enough to bring to dinner so I didn't have to bring a second bag.

Frequently asked questions about packing for a Disney cruise
What should I wear during the day on a Disney cruise?
I wore two outfits during the day on my Disney cruises: an athleisure tennis skirt outfit for non-pool times and pool outfit/cover-up for island/pool on the cruise. Are Disney cruise ships cold inside? Disney cruise ships are air conditioned and comfortable, but they didn't have that refrigerated feeling you get at a mall in July. What do I need to bring to Castaway Cay? Swimsuit, cover-up, change of clothes, sunscreen, hat, entertainment options, small snack, and water are my essentials for Castaway Cay! What pairs of shoes should I bring on a Disney cruise? I'd bring a pair of sneakers for the travel/walking track, and then a pair of sandals for the pool and one for dinner. Bonus points if you can use the same pair for both, but that's easier said than done! Do I need a Magic Band+ on a Disney cruise? So, you do not "need" a Magic Band on a Disney Cruise, as you will be given a "Key to the World" card that will get you into your room, etc. That said, we brought our Magic Bands, and I would recommend them. They allow you to get on and off the ship, into your room, and to charge purchases to your room so easily, as in Disney World, and they're just easier to keep track of than the card. Can I bring a stroller on a Disney cruise? Unsurprisingly, the answer will depend on the ages of your children (and probably how many you have). You are allowed to bring a stroller, but are encouraged to bring something small, like an umbrella stroller, which you can store more easily in your stateroom. If you're thinking you want a stroller for Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, I'll note that the latter (which has the long walk from the ship) has wagons you can just grab / drop without checking them out or anything. This is the only time we'd have 'needed' a stroller for our 3 year old, and the wagon was great. Castaway Cay doesn't have a long of a walk, and there's a tram. Thanks for Stopping By!
You do not need an entirely separate wardrobe for every activity onboard your Disney cruise, and you definitely do not need as much as you think you do. A few comfortable outfits, swim essentials, and those fun Disney extras will set you up for success.
