Packing for a trip to Southwest Michigan?
Well, then it sounds like you're preparing for one of our favorite easy Midwest weekend getaways. Living in Indianapolis, I've been coming to this part of Michigan regularly throughout my life, from weekends in New Buffalo and Union Pier to South Haven, and farther north to Saugatuck and Holland, often as a pit stop on our way to Petoskey or Glen Arbor. Unlike Up North, which I adore, but is a bit of a hike, Southwest Michigan is an easy road trip from Indianapolis and over from Chicago, with beautiful beaches, quaint little towns, wineries, breweries, and plenty of great restaurants.
If you're wondering what to bring, you should first know that you can expect, probably unsurprisingly, a very casual destination. You won't need an elaborate resort wardrobe, and you certainly don't need to dress up every night, if at all. For our Southwest Michigan trips, I opt for comfortable clothes for exploring during the day, beach essentials during the summer, a few slightly nicer pieces for wineries or dinner, and layers for comfortable evenings near Lake Michigan. Southwest Michigan is casual, even at nicer restaurants and wineries. Plan for a classic Midwest lake vacation, rather than a particularly dressy beach destination.
It's also an extremely family-friendly destination, and you'll see lots of families with young kids, especially around the beaches, casual restaurants, and breweries. That contributes to the overall relaxed feel. In summer, you'll see mostly denim shorts, sundresses, casual tops, sandals, and sneakers. I pack clothes that can work for more than one part of the day. A casual dress can take you from shopping in New Buffalo to a winery and then to dinner, while denim shorts and a cute top work just as well for exploring one of the small downtowns. You won't need a separate outfit for every activity on your trip. It's the kind of place where you can spend the morning at the beach, go back to your hotel or rental house to change, and then wear one casual outfit for the rest of the day. Even in summer, you should bring something to cover up with, like a lightweight cotton sweater, really light jacket, or wrap. Evenings by the Lake at your campfire can feel considerably cooler than sunny afternoons.

What to Wear Exploring New Buffalo and Southwest Michigan

For days spent exploring New Buffalo, Three Oaks, St. Joseph, or another Southwest Michigan town, you can really wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
Denim shorts with a casual top and sneakers or sandals are ideal in summer. A sundress also works well and is especially useful if you're planning to stop at a winery or nicer restaurant later in the day. As ever, I prioritize comfortable shoes. Even though none of these downtowns are very large, it's easy to spend a surprising amount of time on your feet when you're shopping, stopping for coffee, walking to lunch, and generally wandering around. I also like a small crossbody bag when I'm popping into shops and chasing my daughter. You don't need to carry much, and it's much easier than hauling around a large tote unless you're heading to the beach. If you're visiting Southwest Michigan outside of the hottest part of summer, jeans or casual pants with a lightweight sweater or jacket are an easy choice. What to Wear to Southwest Michigan Wineries and Breweries
Visiting wineries and breweries is one of my favorite things to do in Southwest Michigan (well, anywhere, realistically).
For wineries, I usually lean slightly nicer than I would for a regular afternoon around town. A sundress with comfortable sandals is an easy summer outfit. You could also wear denim shorts or casual pants with a nice top. Keep in mind that many Southwest Michigan wineries have outdoor seating, lawns, and other areas where shoes with heels won't be particularly practical (you'd also be overdressed). I would just opt for shoes that can handle grass and uneven surfaces. I'd say that breweries do tend to be even more casual. Denim shorts or jeans with a T-shirt or casual shirt and sneakers are completely appropriate. Some breweries and wineries also have outdoor events and live music during the warmer months, so you'll be glad to have comfortable shoes and a sweater/jacket if you plan to stay into the evening. Southwest Michigan is also a popular spot for girls' weekends and bachelorette parties. We saw quite a few groups on our most recent trip, particularly around the wineries and breweries. If that's the kind of trip you're planning, you can certainly dress up a bit more, but the overall atmosphere is still quite casual. What to Wear to Dinner in New Buffalo

For a nicer dinner, still opt for just a casual dress with sandals, or jeans with a dressier top. You certainly can dress up more if that's part of the fun of vacation for you, but you don't need cocktail attire or heels for a typical night out.
On our recent trip, we had fun exploring Journeyman Distillery and dining at Staymaker for our anniversary. I wore my favorite Tuckernuck Riley jelly sandals and a longer, casual Hill House Goldie Nap Dress, which was comfortable and worked well for the destination. Low-profile sneakers with the dress also would have been completely fine. If you're planning to eat outside, bring a sweater or lightweight jacket. Even after a hot summer day, the temperature can drop near Lake Michigan once the sun goes down. What to Pack for Lake Michigan Beach Days
If you're visiting Southwest Michigan during the summer, you'll probably spend at least some time at the beach. Lake Michigan is a huge part of the appeal of this area, and the beaches can be absolutely beautiful on sunny summer days.
For a beach day, pack a swimsuit, cover-up, sandals, sunglasses, and a sun hat. You'll also want plenty of sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. A large beach tote is useful for carrying sunscreen, towels, water, and anything else you'll want during the day. Before packing a bunch of beach gear and water toys, I'd check what your hotel or vacation rental provides. Depending on where you're staying, you may already have access to beach chairs, towels, or other beach essentials. The Marina Grand Resort (where we stayed on this last trip) actually provided a very cute woven beach bag in the room for us to use, which was a pleasant surprise. I brought my Bogg bag, which worked well, had our stuff already in it, and is waterproof, which was ideal for a fairly wet weekend. If you're planning water activities or spending most of the day outside, make sure you're prepared for the sun. It can be easy to underestimate just how much time you're spending outside when there's a nice breeze coming off Lake Michigan. Staying Warm on Lake Michigan Evenings
Even if the forecast looks hot for your entire trip, I wouldn't visit Southwest Michigan without some sort of lightweight layer.
Lake Michigan, and the often lesser humidity, can make the weather feel cooler, particularly in the evening or on windy days, if you come from a swamp like me. A lightweight sweater, sweatshirt, or jacket is usually enough during a summer trip. I also like having at least one pair of jeans, even when I'm primarily packing denim shorts and dresses. They're useful for cooler evenings and give you another option if the weather doesn't cooperate. I wore my jeans every night this trip when we sat on our porch. Check the forecast before you leave and add a lightweight rain jacket if necessary. You probably don't need elaborate rain gear for a typical weekend trip, but a waterproof jacket can be useful if several rainy days are expected. Selecting Shoes for Your Southwest Michigan Trip
For most trips, I'd bring one pair of comfortable sneakers and one pair of sandals. Sneakers are perfect for exploring towns, shopping, and any day when you'll be doing a lot of walking. Sandals work for the beach, wineries, and casual dinners.
If you're planning a nicer dinner, you could bring a slightly dressier pair of sandals if you're worried your beach ones aren't nice enough or will get too dirty. I'm a shoe girl, so I brought low-profile sneakers, walking sneakers, and my Tuckernuck jellies. Next time, I'd also bring a pair of "beach sandals," which I conveniently left sitting...on my bedroom floor. The beach is an easy walk from downtown New Buffalo and would have been a great place to stroll after dinner, if I'd had shoes I wasn't worried about getting sandy. That said, your shoe selection may be different if you're planning more serious outdoor activities. Warren Dunes State Park, for example, may call for sturdier shoes than you'd wear for a day shopping in New Buffalo.

What to Pack for Outdoor Activities in Southwest Michigan
If you're planning to explore local parks, bike, or spend significant time in natural areas, it's probably worth adding a few practical items to your suitcase. Insect repellent is a must during the warmer months, especially if you'll be outside around dusk. My husband and I got absolutely eaten alive while relaxing on our porch at The Marina Grand.
I'd bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a baseball cap/hat for longer outdoor activities. You'll also want shoes appropriate for whatever you're planning to do. I don't personally pack specialized outdoor gear for a typical New Buffalo weekend, as I am an indoor/beach gal, but if outdoor adventures are a major part of your itinerary, plan accordingly. As always in Michigan, check the weather before you leave. Since we drive up from Indy, even after work, we have the luxury of loading up the car and throwing in whatever we think we'll need for three people over three days. These towns have cute little grocery stores where we'll grab food before checking in, but I try to make sure we've packed all of the important clothing and bigger items we'll need. Remember: you almost certainly need less than you think. This is a casual destination, and it's very easy to rewear pieces and create outfits that work for several different activities.
Check the weather right before you leave, bring comfortable shoes, a sweatshirt/sweater, and the usual beach essentials during the summer. Southwest Michigan is an easy place to visit and an easy place to pack for. Bring comfortable clothes you actually enjoy wearing, and leave plenty of room for your many New Buffalo/Stray Dog T-shirt and sweatshirt collections.
