For Americans, visiting Europe is hugely exciting, and feels almost like a right of passage. We've grown up learning about Europe, but often never seeing it first hand. Not to mention the fact we don't have access to anything even close to as old as the vast majority of buildings we'll get to explore on our European adventures.

I took my first trip to Europe when I was 26, though I had quite a bit of experience traveling in the U.S. and surrounding areas over on our side of the Atlantic. While at the time I felt that it had taken me "forever" to "finally get to Europe," in hindsight, it allowed me to glean a lot from the experience, and to notice a lot of differences and travel tips to pass along, as I was an adult.

Which European country should I visit?

Edinburgh, Scotland (SPC)

Most likely, you're going to want to start with one of the "major" tourist destinations for visiting Americans: London/Scotland, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam. You'll have tons to see (more than enough for one visit in any of these places), easy day trips, lots of English speakers, and tourist-friendly spots.

I think Edinburgh is the perfect destination for a first trip to Europe for Americans. Edinburgh is served by a nice, small and manageable airport, and the city itself is an absolute gem. There's no language barrier, and the UK has great and easy transit, so you can pop all around the country for day trips. Why Edinburgh is the Perfect Destination for First-Time Europe Travelers.

Surviving a Transatlantic Flight

For many Americans, their first long haul flight is their first trip to Europe. If you're anxious or curious about the flight, reading up on it can certainly help. And don't be concerned! It's just not that brutal.

What to expect at European hotels

European hotels rooms are small

Don't expect European hotels to be identical to American ones. When I'm booking my trips, I often find the most scathing reviews of European hotels by Americans who don't understand that some of these differences are just what you're going to find at any hotel in Europe. I'm definitely not saying that you have to love these differences, but they are part and parcel of travel.

Are hotel rooms in Europe small? Yes. This is just something you need to be prepared for. Retro-fitted into existing buildings, or even old buildings that have always been hotels, expect any hotel room in Europe, even outside of the major cities, to be a fraction of the size you'd expect in the States.

Picking a hotel room

When picking a hotel, read the dimensions of the room you're booking. You may be surprised how small it is. We almost always want to upgrade at least one level above the "basic" hotel room.

Be sure to check what type of bed you're getting. Europeans tend to sleep in smaller beds than Americans. Many rooms for two people will actually have a "double" bed (European friends - this is almost unheard of in American hotel rooms), which is sometimes two twin beds pushed together, or sometimes just a small bed that can technically accommodate two people. If you need or want a big bed, you're most likely to find them in upgraded rooms or in American hotel chains.

Getting your caffeine fix

Most European hotels have "coffee or tea facilities" in the rooms. Depending on the country you're visiting, they'll focus more on tea (UK) or espresso/espresso-based drinks (Spain, Italy, France).

You will likely find either a Nespresso maker or a "kettle"/"jet boiler" that heats hot water, accompanied by little baggies of instant coffee or bags of tea. It's enough to keep you from getting a lack-of-caffeine headache, first thing in the morning!

Navigating bathrooms in European hotels

European and British hotels do sometimes have a slightly more lax view of shared bathrooms, so just be sure that your booking references "private" or "en suite" bathroom, though this generally isn't an issue at higher end hotels.

When it comes to your in-room bathroom, while the bathtub/shower combo is a mainstay of American homes and hotels, not so in Europe. You are likely to find a separate bath and shower. European showers often don't have a full door closure like we do, but more of a glass half door or just an opening...causing water to spill into the bathroom. Beware. You may find a bidet in addition to a toilet, even in basic level rooms.

Charging your devices in European hotels

European countries use different "plugs" than American ones - so your devices will not be able to be directly plugged into the wall without some form of plug adapter. Before your trip, buy a plug converter that allows American plugs to plug into the wall at your hotel.

Many hotels are accommodating the range of plugs by installing plugs next to the bed that have USB plugs or they'll have a variety of plug options or adapters for you. You can then pull the "plug" part off of most phone chargers and just plug that USB into the wall.

Not all countries use the same converters. You need to look up which one to use, depending on where you're going (it says in the Amazon description), though many hotels have incorporated USB charging ports

Dining in Europe

Let's work through dining in Europe chronologically, starting with your morning coffee:

Americanos

There is a persistent and unassailable assumption by Europeans that Americans drink "Americanos." What is an Americano, you ask? An Americano is espresso and super hot water. The drink was derived by European baristas during WWII, to try to give American GI's the closest thing they could to drip coffee, hence the name. Even when there's a language barrier, I have more than once had a barista declare "Americano!!!" in all seriousness when I'm trying to order and then proudly give me the boiling concoction.

Just go with it. Pour some milk in it to cool it off.

Finding drip coffee in Europe

There are many coffee chains throughout Europe and UK, like in the US, including Cafe Nero, Pret a Manger, and of course they have Starbucks. A lot of these places will have "drip" coffee, if you really need it. My advice would be to follow the coffee culture of the place where you are. Drip coffee will be home in your Keurig when you get back. Have a cappuccino in Italy! Drink tea in England!

If you secure "drip" or "American" coffee, or are landed with the ubiquitous Americano, they may ask "white or black?" Which just means do you want milk.

Different classes of restaurants:
Pubs, cafes, and restaurants

When picking somewhere to eat, Europeans tend to be more open about "categories" of what we broadly call "restaurants" than we are. The type with the least "service" would be a coffee shop - which are just like coffee shops/ Starbucks in the US - order at the counter, pick-up at the counter, you can sit, but you don't have to. Food is often limited to croissants, muffins, or pre-packaged, small items.

One note: at coffee shops or fast dining establishments, like Pret A Manger, sometimes you do have to pay slightly more if you're eating "in," so they may ask that at the counter whether you're dining "in." It's a bit more than "for here or to go," so you need to be honest...and can't really change your mind.

Pub

Pub (SPC)

In the UK, the mainstay for basic meals are "pubs" aka my favorite places in the world. Key note for Americans: at a pub, you order both your drinks and your food at the bar.

You will wait and carry your drinks back to your table, but they will generally give you a number and bring the food to your table (but not always). You can sit at the table all day waiting for someone to wait on you, but that's just not how it works. I love pubs, for the atmosphere, and the more relaxed dining approach. You can stay as long as you please over your pints, and if after an hour you decide you want some food, pop up to the bar and ask for a menu. Much less pressure all around.

Cafes & Restaurants

The next "level" would be a cafe. Less formal than a restaurant, when I think cafe I think Paris, though of course they have them across Europe. We have cafes in the U.S. - like casual lunch places that often have outdoor dining. You will nearly always have a waiter and menus, as we're used to.

"Restaurants" are the same, but generally a bit nicer than a cafe - more of a "dinner" than a lunch place, or the type of lunch place where you'll have a glass of wine.

Dining etiquette in Europe

Let's discuss a few differences in sit-down dining between Europe and the U.S.. This would pertain to "cafes" and "restaurants."

Diners generally stay far longer over meals and the wait staff expect and are OK with that. If you have a show to get to or a plane to catch, you might want to let your server know at the beginning of your meal.
Waiters have far more tables, because people stay longer, thus you will get far less attention from the waiters than you're used to. It's not because they don't like you. It's because they don't want to bother you or make you feel rushed.
The waiters are paid a reasonable wage and are not reliant on tips. How much you tips depends on the country (and you should look up the custom in advance), but generally it is a true tip - not expected, but appreciated. Rounding up, or throwing down a couple "quid" is generally sufficient. Though not common, I have encountered a few unscrupulous touristy places that try to take advantage of the American practice of tipping to gain extra money for themselves. You should never be pressured into giving a tip, and you will not be pressured at nice places.
There generally are not "free refills" on drinks like soda and lemonade. If you want another alcoholic beverage, you will order it and be charged again.
Generally, waiters will not ask if you want another drink, even of alcohol - if you want something, you need to let them know.
The nicer the restaurant, the more likely you are to have - and be expected to have - more courses with your meal. It's not that you have to, but in a restaurant in France, you'll definitely get a funny look if you only order main courses.
The waitstaff will almost never bring your bill unless you specifically ask for it. They are not blowing you off. They think it's rude to bring it before you've asked for it - like they're kicking you out. When you're ready to leave, just flag them down and ask for the bill.

A First Timer's Guide to Europe:
Social etiquette

Learning how people interact differently across the globe is part of the fun of travel, but it can also be stressful. As we'll discuss below, most people with whom you will interact will speak some English. Learn some basic phrases in the local language, to be polite, as that is the extent of the interaction you will have with many people.

Beyond that, my overall tips are to always say hello and goodbye in the native language when you enter and leave shops, never assume anyone speaks English - always ask first before you start chatting at them in English, speak more quietly than you are used to, and be mindful of lines. You can never go wrong by backing off, not cutting people, or apologizing.

In big cities, always follow the walk on the left, stand on the right rule on escalators (even in England - they don't reverse which side they walk on, just because they drive on the other side from us). Don't talk to strangers.

A First Timer's Guide to Europe: Practicalities

Will my cellphone work in Europe?

Yes, You can work with your carrier to get international coverage during your time in Europe. Additionally, when your phone is on "airplane mode" you can use provided WiFi in Europe. For more on this, check out the ever-helpful Rick Steves' guide.

Can I use my credit card in Europe?

Check the policy on your credit card before you go. I have a "travel card" from a major US bank that does not have international transaction fees. Generally, I can use my credit card in the vast majority of places we visited. Occasionally, there are places that do not take credit cards, but this is increasingly rare. If they ask if you want to pay in the local currency or American dollars, say the local currency. There's no need to pay a conversion fee on a credit card charge.

I always bring some cash. This is just a best practice. AND, get that cash before you leave home. Many banks will convert money for little or no charge on the front end, but once you're in Europe, you'll be largely at the mercy of companies that charge a fee to change US money into Euros, pounds, etc. Even if it says "no fee," they are generally still making a profit, often by giving you an unfavorable exchange rate. If it seems too good to be true...

Visiting tourist attractions

Europeans have a different approach to buying tickets to tourist attractions than Americans. There is this whole culture of buying tickets "in advance" as opposed to once you arrive. Even if you buy tickets "in advance" or like "skip the line" tickets, you often still have to wait in line. So buy tickets in advance when possible. It will save you so much time and stress. Always buy tickets directly from the tourist attraction, if you can.

There are a lot of "tours" and "skip the line special entry" tickets that are scams (they aren't always, but a lot of them are). Just save yourself the hassle and buy directly from the museum/location online, in advance and do your research about the specific place you're hoping to visit to avoid scams.

You can rent audioguides, and entry prices will vary depending on which country you are in and how the site is managed. Government-owned locations are generally cheaper than privately-run ones.

What to Wear in Europe

In general, Europeans dress up more than Americans. They generally do not wear athletic gear/pajamas in public, so put your best foot forward. Some high-end restaurants and nightclubs will have "no trainer (tennis shoe)" policies and some don't allow jeans/shirts with writing. Do people speak English in Europe?

The Pantheon, Rome, Italy (SPC)

In areas that accommodate tourists, most people will speak at least enough English to undertake a transaction, as English is also the "universal" language among Europeans. Do take the time to learn a few common phrases in the language of the country you're visiting, just to be polite and fit in. If all else fails, pointing and gesturing is always Ok!

A note on people who do not speak English...Obviously, no one is "obligated" to speak English. I have occasionally heard tourists getting frustrated with staff who did not speak English...a topic for another day. Occasionally, when asked if they "speak English," people will say "no," even if they do speak a bit of English. I have been told by multiple people that this can be the result of embarrassment or concern at the fact they are not fluent in English. It can be a social class component in certain countries - people who go to elite schools or have international jobs are more likely to speak English - and some people may feel uncomfortable about the fact they do not speak English well. Similarly, people will often unnecessarily apologize when their English isn't "perfect," even though half the time it's better than mine!

Feeling comfortable and confident is part of my personal enjoyment of travel (and everyday life). I like to feel that I fit in, look good, and am representing myself well. Checking the weather forecast

Plan for the season you'll be experiencing, as your trip will be largely outdoors. What sort of travel blogger would I be if I allowed you to miss out on exploring Europe because you've brought the wrong shoes? Waterproof shoes in spring, a lighter winter coat in winter, long-ish shorts in summer, and a 'topper' or trench in fall and off you go!

A neutral palette

Make the most of your limited suitcase space by sticking to mix-and-matchable neutral colors. You can't predict how many outfits you'll need to make during your trip, and being able to change things up at the last minute is key. Additionally, European women tend toward a more subdued palette and fewer bright colors, so you'll fit in better with the crowd. Similarly, I'd steer toward solid colors and avoid graphic tees, slogans, and logos. Stick to timeless pieces.

Best nail polishes for a trip to Europe

I opt for gel polish to keep my nails looking nice through the whole trip. Seven-ten days is too long to ask of traditional nail polish, especially when you're hauling suitcases and washing your hands more than usual.

Packing jewelry for a trip to Europe

I bring only as much jewelry as I can wear on a normal day, and I wear it each and every day. That way, I'm not leaving it in the hotel room or getting confused about whether or not I have everything. Ensure that all of your important jewelry is insured before you go.

What to Wear on Your Flight to Europe

I try to keep my travel make-up fairly light. I find Europeans don't wear a ton of make-up, and they seem to have a great way of looking chic without it. For tourists, I don't want to have runny mascara, or eye shadow up to my eyebrows at the end of a long travel day, during which I've tried to sleep on a plane.

Selecting clothes for the flight

Your outfit for a long-haul flight to Europe serves several purposes. In addition to keeping you comfortable during the flight across the Atlantic Ocean, it's also an opportunity to bring items with you, outside of your suitcase. I would wear a travel set that you aren't interested in wearing during your trip, as it will be 'airplane filthy' after you land. What to Wear in Europe: Logistics once you arrive

Styling your hair in a European hotel room

How are you going to look perfect if you don't have your normal hair styling products? Most hotels in Europe will have a hair dryer. But, when it comes to other styling devices, you'll need to have that adapter if you're going to want to use your straightener or curler. A note on dress codes in Europe

In some destinations you'll visit in Europe, including 'sharp' restaurants and some religious sites, you may run across a dress code. In general, cultural norms dictate more conservative clothing, regardless of a formal dress code. The dress codes in restaurants generally prohibit 'trainers' (sneakers), torn jeans, and sometimes athleisure wear or sweatsuits. In religious sites, modest attire is sometimes requested for women, such as shoulder covering, or no very short shorts or skirts.
Leave the tank tops and booty shorts at home.

Add an extra layer

Europeans tend to 'finish their outfits' by adding an extra layer (jacket, topper, structured cardigan, scarf) beyond what we'd probably add. Be sure to include a couple extra layer options in your suitcase, depending on the season. We'll get into specifics later.

Regardless which country you're visiting, there are a few things you definitely will want to bring to look your best during your time in Europe.

Finding the perfect light jacket for Europe

Unless you'll be going to Northern Europe in the dead of winter, light jackets are the name of the game. For most countries in Europe, a light trench coat/windbreaker will be a great day-to-day top layer, rain or shine.

FAQ: Should I bring my winter coat to Europe?

It depends where you're visiting. I've flown my winter jacket to both London and Paris in early spring and late fall, only to have it take up space in my suitcase and never see the light of day. If you'll be visiting Northern Europe in the depths of winter, then by all means, bring the winter coat. London? You'll simply never need the winter coat you wear in Minneapolis.

Comfortable walking shoes for Europe

Finding the perfect walking shoes is *key* to feeling comfortable on a trip to Europe. Lots and lots of walking will be your main activity and cobblestone streets, combined with even the smallest blister can seriously ruin a tourism day. In addition to comfort, there are a few other elements to keep in mind when picking shoes for Europe:

Bring versatile shoes that can be interchangeable with different outfits.
Don't bring event-specific shoes (high heels, beach flip flops) unless you are positive you will be attending an event where they are required.
Check the dress codes of special events to be sure you have the appropriate attire (some fancy restaurants don't allow tennis shoes).
I'd suggest rotating your during-the-day walking shoes every couple of days. Don't rely on just one pair.

I would recommend relying on shoes you've had for a while for the everyday walking. If you're going to buy new shoes for your trip, definitely do this thoughtfully. If you have new shoes, even ones you're planning to wear just for evening/special events, definitely break them in before your trip. You simply can't walk 20,000 steps a day in new shoes.

FAQ: Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Not too many years ago, a significant portion of this 'how to not look like a tourist in Europe' post would have been dedicated to lecturing you about there's no easier way to identify an American tourist than by their "clunky, white tennis shoes." Well, times have changed and so has European style. Feel free to wear a pair of classic, white sneakers. If Kate Middleton can do it, so can we.

My packing list of comfortable shoes Europe for is:

one pair of boots or booties. I like Blondo boots because they're waterproof, but aren't "rain boots," so they're perfect for rainy, yet classy, days;
A pair of flats (I am obsessed with Sam Edelman loafers); and
one pair of classic sneakers

Purses for Europe

The right purse will be one of your more vital accessories on a trip to Europe. It's also one of the easier pieces to find.

The ideal purse for Europe should have three essential qualities:

It should be as small as possible to carry only your essential items
It should close fully. I say this not to scare you, but to prevent avoidable accidents. Pickpockets are a real concern, especially in 'touristy' areas, like near the Eiffel Tower.
It should be able to withstand some amount of weather, if you're caught by surprise, particularly if you're visiting the UK

In general, I prefer a basic crossbody bag (and this one is pickpocket-resistant!).

FAQ: Do I need a travel backpack in Europe?

Unless you are traveling with small children, or need to carry a large number of possessions for some specific reason, I would skip the backpack for everyday touring in Europe. Carrying a lot around is exhausting, you may have to check your backpack at museums (or wear it on your front), and you're less likely to blend in.

Pants for Europe

I'd generally recommend bringing a great pair of jeans and a couple pairs of wrinkle-resistant travel pants. Make sure your jeans are well-fitting and not distressed. And be sure that you have pants/skirts that aren't denim, if you plan to visit any 'smart' restaurants.

FAQ: Can I wear shorts in Europe?

Yes, you can wear shorts for your summer trip to Europe, and European women do wear shorts. However, it's not generally as hot in Europe as it is in the U.S., so to fit right in with the Europeans, consider wearing longer, chino shorts than you normally would (example linked here). I would also avoid distressed denim shorts or work-out shorts, as they aren't consistent with European fashion trends.

No matter the country, I always recommend adding a scarf to most outfits for winter/spring/fall in Europe. They're perfectly comfortably for travel, yet keep you looking classy and polished all day long.

A wrap

For the airplane rides, late-nights, outdoor dinners, and even casual museum strolling on a nice day, I love a wrap to keep my temperature comfortable when going in and out of AC, or when the temperature unexpectedly dips.

FAQ: What should I wear in Europe if it rains

If you come prepared, you can avoid the ultimate mark of the tourist, the dreaded plastic parka.

Generally, I rely on an extremely compact umbrella, a light rain jacket, and waterproof shoes, but not rain boots, which are hard to walk in and will inevitably cause blisters, no matter how comfortable you think they are. That way, I'm prepared for rain, but also look normal...not like I'm about to go on the Maid of the Mist.

Packing is one of the best ways to get excited for a long-awaited trip (that and reading excellent, helpful travel blogs!). I research the weather at my destination, try to get my itinerary nailed down, and think through the logistics of how many suitcases I can bring and whether we'll be moving hotels.

The goal of the packing process is to have enough outfits to look nice during my entire trip, all the way from the minute I step onto the plane, all the way throughout my experience trudging all around those winding, cobblestone streets.

I've compiled all the tips and tricks I can possibly come up with, to help you pack perfectly for Europe. What to wear on the plane? Check. How to pack the perfect carry-on bag? Check. The best shoes for Europe? Got 'em. Make-up and hair styles? You betcha.

What to Pack for 10 Days
in Europe

For a typical 10-day trip to Europe, I generally recommend packing:

5–6 tops that can be mixed and matched
2–3 pairs of pants or jeans
1–2 dresses or nicer outfits, depending on your plans
1 sweater or structured cardigan
1 trench coat (or winter coat), depending on the season
2 pairs of comfortable walking shoes (sneaker/ankle boot)
1 optional pair of loafers for dinners
1 anti-theft leather crossbody purse
Pajamas, underwear, and socks for the duration
A scarf
A very small umbrella
Travel set for the return flight
Toiletries, medications, and basic makeup
Chargers and a European plug adapter

Finding the right luggage for a trip to Europe

The best tip I can give you about selecting luggage for a trip to Europe is to remember how tiny European hotel rooms are, even at nice hotels. Therefore, I'd suggest avoiding hard-shelled suitcases that unzip down the middle and flop open. Opt instead for a more traditional style bag that unzips just at the top so you can get the contents out, like this.

Choosing suitcases for your trip depends largely on your itinerary and if/how you’ll be traveling around once you arrive. If you’ll be taking trains, changing hotels frequently, or navigating smaller European cities, make sure you can comfortably handle your suitcase yourself. You may encounter stairs, cobblestones, small (or a complete lack of) elevators, and plenty of moments when there is no one around to help with your bag.

I generally prefer to check a suitcase for a 10-day trip to Europe rather than trying to fit everything into a carry-on. I know carry-on-only travel is popular, but it isn’t necessary for everyone. I've found a reasonably sized checked suitcase to be manageable, as we generally stay in 2 hotels max during our time across the pond.

Whatever size suitcase you choose, resist the temptation to fill every available inch. A huge, overstuffed suitcase becomes a real nuisance when you’re getting on and off trains or hauling it through a hotel. It also leaves you no room for anything you pick up along the way.

I’m also a big fan of packing cubes for European trips. They keep everything organized, make it much easier to unpack and repack as you move between hotels, and help me see how much I’m actually bringing. I like to organize my clothes by category so I can find what I need without digging through my entire suitcase.

Before you leave, check your airline’s current baggage allowance and size and weight restrictions. These vary by airline and fare, particularly if you’ll be taking flights within Europe or using budget airlines.

What to Wear on Long Haul Flights to Europe

A lot of people throw on clothes and run to the airport to hop on that transatlantic flight to Europe. This is the first, and perhaps the most critical, Europe *packing* mistake. You're missing an opportunity to transport clothes to Europe efficiently (on you!) and make yourself more comfortable during and after your long flight. Your airplane outfit should

be comfortable on the plane,
look nice enough that you'll feel comfortable arriving at your hotel wearing it. You're going to be wearing it during your first bit of time in the city you're so excited to visit.
not wrinkle easily.
include the heaviest shoes you want to have on the trip, in colder months. I generally wear booties if it's fall or winter.
include socks! Your bare feet will be absolutely freezing at 2 AM over the Atlantic. It gets surprisingly chilly in the plane, especially near the walls.
include layers, such as a light trench coat that you'll want to wear in the city where you're going, or, depending on the season, a lightweight, packable travel wrap.

What NOT to Wear on Long Haul Flights to Europe

pants/shirt you’ll want to wear again because they’ll be airplane filthy and you won't even be able to look at them again,
super-tight leggings, which can be uncomfortable over a long period. I love these crepe pants from Eileen Fisher- they're machine washable, don't wrinkle during the long flight, and have a comfortable waistband. They feel like leggings, but they don't squish you all over during a long flight.
your winter coat. It's too bulky to comfortably accommodate in your seat and they often won't let you put it in the overhead bin. Now that we're talking about it, now's a good time to do some destination-specific research. Do you need that winter coat at all? It's often warmer in Europe than in the US.

What personal item/bag should I bring with me on my long flight?

I bring a small tote bag with me as my personal item on the flight. You're not going to use the tote bag while you're actually walking around in Europe, but I find it helpful for all of the travel. I use my Louis Vuitton Neverfull, or another leather option that I don't mind jamming under the seat in front of me. I use my small crossbody as my wallet (strap in carry-on), and then it becomes my daily travel purse in Europe.

Packing the perfect carry-on for a long haul flight...my secret

Losing your luggage is always stressful, and it’s that much worse when you’ve just arrived in a foreign country, sweaty, and have to show-up at the hotel and ask them where you can buy a toothbrush. If you're checking a bag, do what my husband and I do and put essentials in a shared carry-on bag. With knowledge of packing restrictions for liquids, sharp objects, etc., to me, this translates into:

one shirt,
one pair of pants,
two pairs of underwear,
two pairs of socks that work with the shoes I wore on the plane,
some form of jacket that's suitable for rain (if I didn't bring one onto the plane),
toiletry bag.

Pro tip: Include an *empty* reusable water bottle in your tote for the trip. Once you're through security, you can start using it in the airport. There are many places to refill a water bottle, including the quaint public fountains scattered throughout Rome.

Perfect Color Palettes and How to Build a European-Style Outfit

The key to packing the perfect line-up of outfits for over a week in Europe? Keep it simple with neutral colors and items that are easily interchangeable and wearable with multiple other pieces. The goal is to be able to create different outfits, and to be able to shake things up if, say, a waiter drops a tray full of red wine on you at a serene cafe on the Seine in Paris. Don't waste what limited space you have in your small suitcase jamming it full of outfits you can't mix-and-match.

Think realistically through the different activities you'll actually be doing while you're 'across the pond.' If you're a dedicated enough runner that you're actually going to hit the gym, then great, pack workout gear. For the rest of us? Leave the gym clothes at home.

Will my European hotel room have a washing machine?

It is unlikely that your hotel will have a washing machine for guest use. An apartment rental or hostel may have a washing machine, but do you really want to spend your time using it and likely even paying for the privilege? I've never done laundry in Europe on a 10-day trip.

Packing outerwear for Europe

We tend to travel in Fall/Spring, so often all anyone sees of me on a daily basis while touring are my shoes and my light, waterproof jacket. Europeans tend to wear more layers than Americans, so I like to fit in, as best I can. In general, I'd suggest a light jacket or "topper" that can go with all of the outfits you'll be bringing. In the U.K., you can’t go wrong with a Barbour waxed jacket, or, throughout Europe, with a classic trench. If you're going to be doing a fair amount of evening activities, and are cooler than me, you could also throw in a leather jacket.

The right shirts for exploring Europe

I'd include several pretty basic, long-sleeved shirts (or short-sleeved shirts for summer) for winter/spring/fall. Don't do anything too fancy for everyday walking around. Regardless of the time of year, I'd leave the silk blouse, tank tops, and shirts with writing on them at home.

Finding the perfect pants for Europe

For everyday wear, 2 pairs of dark wash jeans or black joggers that look like slacks should be fine. I generally wear jeans during the day, and don't waste my limited space on pants I can only wear once before they wrinkle.

If you'll be visiting in the height of summer, shorts are acceptable for everyday touring, BUT I wouldn't wear anything too short, athletic shorts, or cut-off jeans.

A note on dress codes in Europe...

Be mindful of dress codes at nicer restaurants and religious sites. I would not wear shorts out to dinner in Paris at night, and in Italy and Spain, some of the churches ask that you cover shoulders, or even don't wear shorts or flip flops.

Finding the ideal walking shoes for your Europe trip

If there’s one thing you don’t want to skimp on for a trip to Europe, it’s shoes. Comfortable shoes are a must. If you haven't started breaking in the shoes you intend to wear in Europe, go put them on right now.

My personal approach to packing shoes for my trips to Europe:

one pair of ankle boots;
one pair of neutral sneakers for everyday;
[optional] one pair of flats (I adore these classics from Sam Edelman. I've had several pairs over the years);
[optional] one pair of sandals, if it's summer, for popping out for coffee and letting my feet catch a breather from my other shoes. Leave the beach flip flops at home.

Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Sneakers are undoubtedly in style right now. While, you will see Europeans/Brits in sneakers going about their everyday lives (even Kate Middleton wears them), you will not see them wearing "workout shoes" unless they're on their way to the gym. So keep them clean, low-profile, and with limited logos. Like these!

Additionally, you may encounter dress code restrictions at theaters and especially high-end restaurants that disallow "trainers." So be sure you have some loafers as well as that trusty pair of tennis shoes.

Finding the ideal purse for a trip to Europe

The purse you'll use in Europe should be light-weight and close fully. Don't bring anything heavy - you'll regret it. If you need to bring a travel backpack, remember, you may have to check a backpack at museums, which can be a hassle.

Your Europe travel bag must close fully. No ifs, ands, or butts about it. In touristy areas, there are going to be pickpockets. A leather cross-body bag that zips is the perfect protection - they can't get in and they can't snatch the purse out of your hand. I don't want to make you paranoid, but trust me, you'd rather not deal with it. Not to mention, you want your hands free to shop, etc., not carrying a bag around.

A few years ago, I'd have said "the days of the fanny pack are over, " and yet, fanny packs are very much back. If you want to wear one as a crossbody, please feel free. I'd opt for leather rather than nylon.

What should I carry in my purse during my Europe trip?

Bring only the absolute essentials in your purse for an average day spent exploring Europe. This could include a couple credit cards, your ID, and some local currency. Be sure to get your cash converted in the US before you go. Currency change stations in airports or tourist areas often charge exorbitant fees. And don't forget to tell your bank you're traveling so they don't freeze your credit cards.

Are you planning a 10-hour long haul flight to Europe but have no idea what to wear? First of all, lucky you! There's nothing quite like a flight to Europe. Whether it's your first or your tenth, there's no better feeling than taking off, knowing you'll be landing in the midst of your next great adventure. That said, selecting your outfit for a transatlantic flight is a bizarrely daunting task, at least in my experience. Not only do you want to be comfortable throughout the entire journey, but also you want to arrive at your long-awaited destination feeling (and looking) your best.

After more than my fair share of flights to Europe, I've rounded up my tips and tricks to make sure you're both comfortable and stylish for your journey.

From making the most of your outfit to bring items you'll want in Europe and packing your carry-on, to choosing breathable fabrics and packing a change of clothes, I will provide a roadmap to ensure you arrive in Europe feeling fresh and ready to explore. We'll start with FAQs, then move into rules to dress by and then a few actual item suggestions.

What should you wear on a flight to Europe?

If you're only reading one section of this article, here's my advice.
My go-to outfit for a flight to Europe is:

a comfortable travel set or structured joggers (no pajamas)
a lightweight sweater or travel wrap
clean white leather sneakers
compression socks (optional)

minimal jewelry that I won't need to remove

The goal isn't to look like you're heading to the gym, but you also don't need to dress for a fashion shoot. My favorite travel outfits are comfortable enough to sleep in on the plane but polished enough that I can head straight into a café or museum after landing in Europe, without looking like I just rolled out of bed.

The easiest way to look classy on a plane is to wear a monochrome outfit. A single color is sleek, trending, elevated, and does not impact your comfort on the plane for the sake of style. But remember you'll be wearing this set during some of your first day in Europe, so opt for a set that is more 'polished' and less athleisure. Rules to Dress By on a Flight to Europe

Layer Up

Select clothes that are easy to take off and put back on, such as a light sweater or a cardigan over a basic tee. You can adjust your clothing to the temperature on the plane, which can fluctuate throughout the flight.

Particularly in warmer months, the time spent on the tarmac can be extremely warm, but once you've over the Atlantic, you'll find yourself reaching for the weird airplane blanket. That said...Don't forget to wear close-toed shoes. Not only are "flip flops" not appropriate for Europe, but your toes will be freezing mid-flight. We'll talk more about shoes later.

Additionally, wearing layers allows you to be prepared for any weather conditions you may encounter upon arrival in Europe.

Chose Breathable Fabrics

When selecting your outfit for a 10-hour flight to Europe, it's important to not only consider style, but also comfort. One key factor to keep in mind is choosing breathable fabrics.

Breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, and bamboo allow air to circulate and prevent overheating. These materials are ideal for layering and can be used to create a comfortable yet stylish outfit. Opt for lightweight knitwear or a relaxed-fit blouse to wear with your favorite pair of jeans or (not too tight) leggings.

Moreover, choosing breathable fabrics is also a great way to combat jet lag. Your body temperature plays a crucial role in regulating your sleep-wake cycle, so wearing breathable materials can help you maintain a comfortable temperature, allowing you to rest and recharge during air travel.

FAQ: Should I wear make-up on an overnight flight?

Wearing heavy make-up on an overnight flight is a hassle. I would avoid eye make-up beyond eyebrow pencil. A tinted moisturizer probably won't cramp your style too much either. But, generally, overnight flights are best spent asleep, and eye make-up will almost certainly be all over your face when you wake up.

Some women bring a small amount of make-up in their purse and put some on in the airport or on the way to the hotel, if they're really concerned about it.

FAQ: How should I style my hair for a long haul flight?

Styling my hair for a flight to Europe took a few instances of trial and error. I *hated* getting off the plane and having just the greasiest looking hair upon arrival at my hotel. But, I didn't want to wear anything too elaborate because I also had to try to sleep on the plane.

So, a compromise: I shower right before going to the airport for the flight, dry and curl/style my hair, and pin the front up with bobby pins. I wear this "do" until the plane lands and then take the pins out. My hair doesn't look greasy since I'm prevented from touching it by the bobby pins, and is still reasonably "done" since I had styled it not too terribly long before.

FAQ: Should I bring a travel pillow on a flight to Europe?

If at all possible, I would give travel pillows a spin either at home or on a domestic flight before you commit to hauling one to Europe. I tend to bring one - anything helps!! But, they are bulky and can be a pain to carry through the airport. I'd buy a cheap one somewhere like TJ Maxx that you can get rid of or jam into the overhead bin without guilt, if you lose interest, or for that day time return flight.

My Europe flight day check list

Before I leave for the airport, I always make sure I have:
✓ Passport
✓ Travel documents
✓ Print out of hotel name, address, & map (yes, old school, but yes, I've had issues twice)
✓ Phone charger
✓ Noise-canceling headphones
✓ Refillable water bottle
✓ Travel wrap
✓ Compression socks (in the unlikely event that I'm wearing them)
✓ Change of outfit, if space
It takes about two minutes to double-check, but saves a lot of stress later.

Selecting a Purse for a Flight to Europe

The purse/bag you take on the plane with you should have a few relevant qualities:

Small enough that you can fit it under your seat, so you can access it during the flight, but have enough room for your feet
Big enough to hold whatever you'll need in-flight

I generally bring a medium-sized light-weight leather tote, and put the small, crossbody purse I'll actually carry in Europe in the tote as essentially my wallet. This way, I can use the tote to store a water bottle, reading materials, noise-cancelling head phones, my phone, etc. I generally use my Louis Vuitton Never Full because it's durable, but pretty worn out, and I don't mind them being on the floor of the airplane during a long plane ride.

The Best Pants for a Flight to Europe

I'd say the most common question I get about picking an outfit for a flight to Europe is: "what pants should I wear on the plane?" While comfort is certainly key, there's no need to look like you have the flu. Absolutely, unquestionably: leave the flannel pants at home.

I would recommend a neutral-color, non-athletic wear travel set (or this one, slightly pricier), or structured joggers. Stick to dark colors, in case of spills. White pants on a long travel day is a recipe for disaster. Avoid any wrinkle-prone fabrics. While those linen trousers may look like great travel pants, you and I both know they'll be a crumpled mess when you're wheels down at Heathrow.

Jeans start to dig in after the first few hours of sitting.
I would avoid tight pants, and remember you'll be eating several meals on the plane. Conversely, I'd also avoid extra wide leg pants, as they tend to be trouser-style, which has an uncomfortable waistband, and I prefer not to have excess fabric swooshing around in an airplane bathroom. You certainly do not want your pants even remotely dragging on the ground. And don't get me started on jumpsuits.

FAQ: Is it OK to wear jeans for a long flight?

While you "can" wear jeans on a long flight, they're likely not the most comfortable option. Additionally, you will likely want to wear whatever jeans you take on your trip multiple times, and I try to avoid re-wearing the basics of my airplane outfit, at all costs. I might be a bit of a germaphobe, but there's nothing worse than being sick on vacation, if you can avoid it.

If you do want to wear jeans, I'd avoid skinny jeans (they're out of fashion anyway), because your legs will feel extremely squished by the end of the flight, or any sort of 'distressed' jeans, as you'll look ratty in Europe.

Dress for your first day in Europe ->

One of my biggest travel tips is to think beyond the flight itself.
Ask yourself:
"What am I doing two hours after I land?"
If you're planning to walk around London, your outfit should work for sightseeing.
If you're heading straight to a nice lunch in Paris, you'll probably want something a little more polished.
If your hotel room won't be ready until afternoon (which is often the case), you'll be very glad you dressed for your first day, not just your flight.

Picking the Right Shoes for a Flight to Europe

When planning your outfit for a long-haul flight, it's easy to focus solely on your clothing, forget about your footwear, and cram your feet into whatever's near the backdoor as you rush to the airport. However, choosing the right comfortable shoes can make a big difference in your comfort before, during, and after your long-haul flight.

Do not even think about wearing open-toed shoes on a flight to Europe. Beyond all of the airport filth, the cabin of an international flight, particularly close to the walls and floor, gets surprisingly chilly over the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of the night.

In addition to ease of wear, consider the level of support your shoes provide. Walking around the airport before or during your flight can help prevent stiffness and improve circulation, so choose shoes that offer adequate support for your feet and ankles. Leave the high heels at home. Even in International First Class or Business Class, I've never seen anyone in high heels. Think about the climate and conditions you'll be facing upon arrival. If you'll be walking around a lot upon arrival, comfortable and sturdy shoes will be key. And, finally, remember that the shoes you wear are one item that don't have to be in your suitcase. So I generally recommend wearing the heaviest/bulkiest shoes that you in tend to take on the trip, on the plane.

FAQ: Should I wear compression socks on a long haul flight?

Sure! If you have a medical condition or are prone to swelling or are concerned about blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, it's a good idea to ask your doctor before traveling on a long-haul flight. Blood circulation is good for all of us! In addition to getting up and walking around, compression socks may provide additional comfort and blood flow for your legs and feet. Want to learn more? Adding the right accessories to your outfit can elevate your style and take your travel outfit to the next level. Take this outfit opportunity to plan ahead and wear items you can sport multiple times when you're across the pond.

Scarves are a great way to add some color and texture to your outfit, and can also keep you warm if the airplane gets chilly. A necklace or earrings can add some sparkle to a simple outfit, while a belt can cinch your waist and add some shape to a loose dress or shirt.

Additionally, a hat can not only add some personality to your outfit, but also keep your face protected from the sun upon arrival, particularly if you'll be visiting a Mediterranean destination. Sunglasses are a must-have for any flight, and a stylish pair can make you feel like a celebrity as you walk through the airport.

FAQ: Should I bring my winter coat on my flight to Europe?

To answer this question, we need to take a step back and consider whether you need to bring your winter coat to Europe at all. Dig into the forecast at your destination and confirm whether there will even be enough cold weather to need a true winter coat.

I have taken my winter coat 'across the pond' in Fall and Spring, only to find that I never even put it on. A trench coat or light Barbour jacket is my usual go-to, in place of a big winter coat.

Assuming it is cold enough to bring your coat, remember that you'll likely have to put it under your seat, unless there's room in the overhead bin. If you can put it into a suitcase, I would, unless you're in the First Class (lucky you!)

Even the most comfortable outfit will feel stale after hours of sitting in the same clothes. And while you obviously hope you'll arrive at your much-researched European hotel to be told they've been expecting you and have prepared your room bright and early for their lovely American guests, the reality is, your room is almost never ready at 10 AM Europe time.

That's where packing a change of clothes comes in handy.
Consider packing a lightweight blouse or shirt that you can easily swap out with your travel top, or even a fresh pair of leggings or pants in your carry-on bag.

When choosing your change of clothes, think about the type of activities you have planned once you arrive. If you're heading straight to a fancy dinner or business meeting, pack something dressier that can easily transition from day to night. Packing for a trip to Europe?

If you've been following the blog for a while, you'll know there's nothing I love more than a trip to Europe. September in Edinburgh, spring in London, the leaves changing in Paris...there's genuinely no bad time to visit my favorite places in the world. Of course, different seasons come with different considerations. August in London- quite crowded. April in London...no crowds, but quite rainy.

Packing for your time in Europe can be intimidating, but I promise I can guide you through it. The way I see it, here's your hierarchy of priorities as you sort through your clothes:

Practicality (comfortable walking shoes, appropriate rain gear)
Comfort
In-keeping with European fashion expectations
Easily packable

if you read nothing else...

My most important piece of advice: Don't pack outfits for "events." Pack basic, comfortable, versatile pieces that can be reworn in various combinations. Leather purse, cashmere, denim, walking boots, and a Barbour can get you through any tourist day in Europe.

a note on dress codes and European style...

I find that my American readers are often surprised to learn that Europeans have slightly more 'traditional' and 'formal' style sense than Americans. While Europeans are very open-minded, when selecting their day-to-day attire (or the dress codes of their establishments), you're far more likely to feel "underdressed" or even denied entry to a fancy restaurant because of your attire than you are in the United States.

Keep the shorts a little longer, leave the tank top and beach flip flops at home, and no political slogan t-shirts, please.

General Europe Travel Wardrobe Tips

Dress for walking...not for photos
p You're in Europe to experience and learn. You want to look nice (that's why you're here!), but I wouldn't be a good travel guide if I didn't remind you...you gotta walk in those shoes.

Stick to a neutral color palette
I always try to avoid planning specific "outfits" for my time in Europe. I bring versatile pieces in neutral colors that I can mix and match. You simply never know when a spilled Aperol Spritz is going to take a shirt out of the rotation for your trip, or which new item you'll buy in Covent Garden and want to wear everyday.

Layers for fun...and style
Wearing more than one layer in Europe is important not just for reasons of temperature comfort (the chilly morning at Waverley might have burned off by the time you arrive in St Andrews), but also for style. Europeans are more likely than Americans to wear a top layer: light jacket, cardigan, or topper, in part because it isn't as hot there, and in part because, as we've discussed, they dress more formally. one of the best ways to achieve this look is with a light trench coat. It's cute, stylish, and useful in the event of a surprise shower!

Accessories to elevate basics
Similarly, spruce up those reworn basic t-shirt and jeans with scarves and a belt. A scarf is simply essential in Paris, I promise you.

Think twice about your fabric selections
Select fabrics that travel well and can be worn multiple times. One pair of jeans can carry you through an entire week in Paris. The same can't be said for linen trousers.

Skip the athleisure
While some elements of "athleisure" are acceptable in Europe (hello, joggers), Europeans do not wear athletic gear all day like Americans. Unless you're actively exercising, I'd skip the yoga attire, spandex, or sneakers covered in neon logos for your Europe trip.

Crossbody bags for safety + function
I always recommend a crossbody bag for everyday tourism in Europe, preferably in leather, rather than an athletic material.

Wear it once...then wear it again
Rewearing staples on a Europe trip is a must. To avoid wearing the same outfit in all of your photos, spice things up with a scarf or add/remove jacket for pictures.

What to Wear in Europe in Spring (March–May)

Spring in Europe is lovely, romantic, green, floral, and a bit damp. No matter the city, as in the US, you will get some spring rain. My first spring trip to Europe was London in April and it rained a lot. Not a lot of wash-outs, just drizzle, or a rainy morning, as is usually in the U.K. So you'll want to ensure you bring lightweight rain protection if you're visiting before summer season.

Midi dress + tights

What to Wear in Europe in Summer (June–August)

Summer is, with good reason, the most popular time to visit Europe, both for Americans and Canadians, and for Europeans themselves, who often take extended vacations in the summer to travel. Expect long lines, large crowds, and the further south you go, hot hot hot sun. That said, Europe simply isn't as warm as much of the United States. The average high temperature in Paris in July is 79 (by way of comparison, in Indianapolis it's a toasty 85).

Summer in Europe Outfit Essentials:

Breathable linen or cotton dresses
- Wide-brim hat and sunglasses
- Stylish, supportive sandals or white sneakers
- Light scarf for church/museum dress codes

For summer in Europe, remember that Europeans do not wear "beach flip flops" unless they are...you guessed it- quite literally at the beach/pool. Running to grab coffee at 7 AM? Sandals or sneakers, please!

What to Wear in Europe in Fall (September–November)

In my (not necessarily unique) opinion, you can't find a better time to visit Europe than Fall. Changing leaves, far fewer crowds, chilly mornings, and you can still expect plenty of sun (and everything is still open before holiday closures). Even into late October, it's still warm enough to explore any European city quite comfortably.

As most days of your European trip you'll wear your coat/jacket for at least part of the day, ensure that your coat/shoes/purse are comfortable and classy. I'd recommend trying them on, and wearing them around the house a bit, before to ensure it all fits right. Don't bring a winter coat for Fall in Europe. It's not that cold, and with all the walking, you will simply burn up. Expect cooler weather than summer, but you're often removing that jacket in the afternoon.

Winter in Europe is chilly rather than cold, and often more wet than snowy, especially in southern Europe/the U.K.

Not unlike Fall, your outer layer will be your most needed and visible. REMEMBER: Europeans dress up more than Americans, even in winter — so, please: no bulky ski coats unless you're literally skiing in the Alps. And you won't freeze. Think Nashville winter, not Chicago. The average low in Paris in February is 36. For comparison, the average low in Chicago in February is 18.5 (with the world's coldest breeze off the lake).

Bonus Tips for Smarter Europe Travel Packing

Don't forget the packing cubes!
I first discovered packing cubes when my husband gifted me a set after our first trip to Europe, owing to my constant complaining about my disorganized suitcase. I quickly became a packing cube enthusiast and they've accompanied me on every subsequent trip to Europe.

Packing cubes are unmatched both for keeping your suitcase organized as you change hotels (as we often do at least once when we're in Europe), and try to jam everything in your bag at the end of the trip.

Laundry on the go
If you'll be doing laundry on your trip (I usually try to avoid it, unless I'm in an AirBnB), slip a few laundry detergent sheets into your suitcase to avoid having to buy a whole detergent, etc. once you arrive.

Rolling vs. folding
While some wrinkles are inevitable, I'll advocate rolling rather than folding your clothes in your suitcase. Rolling more effectively prevents wrinkles and allows me to better view my clothes, with the rolls lined up side-by-side, without unpacking my entire suitcase.

Don’t pack “just in case” items
Only bring practical, everyday items with you to Europe. For most tourists, your days will be spent walking around, you'll grab dinner at a pub, walk more, and go to bed. "But what if I..." you probably won't. Leave the exercise gear, "fancy" clothes, high heels, and uncomfortable shoes at home.

This combination is comfortable enough for long sightseeing days, versatile enough to wear with almost anything, and on-point style-wise enough that you won't feel out of place walking through Paris, Rome, or Edinburgh.
If it's not comfortable, don't pack it. If you can't wear it everyday, leave it at home. Ok, you can quit reading now ;)

How to Find the Best Walking Shoes for Europe

You don't have to break the bank

Price doesn't guarantee durability or comfort. What matters most is that the shoes are comfortable and can support you walking 20,000 steps/day.

Break them in

Don't even think about wasting time in Europe sitting on a bench with terribly sore feet because you broke the cardinal rule and wore new shoes on vacation!

Bring a mix of old and new

While all your shoes should be broken in, I like to also bring a mix of old and new. If you have a comfortable older pair that's reaching the end of its life, consider bringing it and leaving it behind to make room in your suitcase for souvenirs.

My simple Europe shoe shopping strategy

For most Europe trips, I bring two pairs of shoes. A comfortable pair of low-profile sneakers for long walking days and a second pair like loafers, sandals, or ankle boots depending on the season. Europe travel often means walking 20,000 steps a day on uneven streets, so comfort matters more than anything else.

My personal Europe shoe packing formula:

Ok, so most people are selecting shoes they already own for a Europe trip. If you aren't in the market for new shoes (or, even if you are), I wanted to be clear about my usual formula.
For most spring and fall trips, I bring:

One pair of comfortable white leather sneakers
One pair of loafers

If I'm traveling during colder or wetter months, I swap the loafers for waterproof ankle boots.
That's it.
I've found that two 'workhorse' pairs of shoes are almost always enough for a week, or even ten days in Europe. They take up less room in your suitcase, make it easier to build outfits, and help avoid the temptation to pack "just in case" shoes that never get worn.

season-by-season

Spring
Spring weather can be unpredictable in Europe, as in the US, so I usually pack comfortable sneakers and something waterproof (generally booties).

Summer
For summer, I go with a combination of sneakers and, in my case, loafers. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so sandals aren't generally a go-to for me, but leather sandals would be appropriate for almost anywhere in Europe in the summer. Ensure they're supportive enough for walking, and avoid pool flip flops unless you're...you guessed it, at the pool.

Fall
Fall is probably my favorite season to visit Europe. Sneakers and loafers work well for most destinations, although I'll often swap loafers for boots later in the season.

Winter
Winter calls for waterproof boots (ankle or regular). You'll appreciate them on wet sidewalks, cobblestones, and chilly mornings. In warmer countries, or if precipitation isn't expected, you'll also get plenty of wear out of those handy sneakers, as well.

Best Casual Loafers for Europe

My secret weapon to looking and feeling good on my trips to Europe is a good pair of loafers. On my first trip to Paris, I broke my cardinal rule and wore this Sam Edelman loafer for the first time on my first full-day exploring Paris. Not a blister in sight. Loafers take you from morning coffee, to lunch time, tourists attractions, and even through dinner and after-dinner cocktails, without running afoul of dress codes.

Best Sneakers for Europe

No matter how comfortable your first pair of walking shoes, be sure to bring a second, to give your feet a change of pace. With the loafer being my go-to, I like to bring a casual sneaker for my "full-on" tourist days (The Tower of London, The Roman Forum, etc.) when you are pretty sure you won't be hitting the fanciest restaurant in town for dinner.

FAQ: Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Yes, you can wear white sneakers in Europe! While "white sneakers" in Europe has been the "look there goes an American" signal for decades, things have changed. Sneakers are very trendy. If Kate Middleton can wear them so can we. Just make sure they're on-trend, clean, and in good condition.

Waterproof Boots for Rainy Days

On any trip to Europe, unfortunately there will be at least one day that's a complete "wash out," and if you're in the UK, you'll probably have a couple more than one...Be sure to bring some waterproof boots or booties that can handle a rainy slog. If possible, I like to bring an old pair that I can thank for their service and put to rest at the end of the trip. Just make sure they're comfortable enough to walk for miles and miles. Anything from Blondo will do the trick!

I would strongly recommend against rubber "Wellington" or "rain" boots. They'll kill your feet.

Evening Appropriate Shoes

No matter your evening plans, be sure to bring one pair of shoes that are appropriate for a "smart" hotel, cocktails, or seeing a show. These could be booties, leather boots, loafers but should NOT be sneakers.

Until I was in my mid-20's, I had never taken a "true" long haul flight. We travelled domestically, drove a lot like good Midwesterners, and the longest flight I'd been on was San Francisco to Indianapolis.

Once I was finally scheduled on a transatlantic flight for our honeymoon to London, I found it incredibly daunting. My husband had traveled internationally with his family quite a bit. But he's a much chiller person than me, so I found his preparatory talks unconvincing. I'm constantly moving, doing, changing activities, going places. How can I keep myself locked in an airplane seat for an entire evening?

Well, I'm pleased to report that I not only survived, but I'd venture to say, thrived, on that first trip to London, and on many more trips to Europe since then. With the right mindset (key), a few tips, plenty of entertainment tools, and a bit of grit, you'll not only survive, but ENJOY, your transatlantic flight.

Here I am today, a few years later and now with many trips "across the pond" under my belt, in addition to quite a few across the U.S., and I'll readily admit that I LOVE flying, especially long hauls.

I'll even go as far as to say that I *look forward* to transatlantic flights - want to know why?

So, today we'll discuss what to expect, what to bring, and how to enjoy a long flight, along with my tips on how to enjoy each element. Just tips, no paywalls, gimmicks, or cheap sales techniques. And I'm not going to try to convince you to buy a bunch of junk from Amazon that you don't need. Much of this comes down to personal preference, but I hope my musings will give you some good food for thought as you think through how you feel about these points.

First things first! A few tips on picking the perfect outfit for your long-haul flight:

Don't wear much, if any make-up. It will run and end-up in your eyes by the end of a potentially 18-hour travel day. If you're concerned how you'll look upon arrival, pack make-up in your purse.
Don't wear your hair in a ponytail, it makes it hard to sleep.
Please, please, please do not wear pajamas. You are in public.
Remember you'll be wearing this outfit during your first morning in Europe.
Wear your heaviest shoes so you don't have to pack them.
Wear layers to adjust for temperature.
It gets surprisingly cold, even in the plane cabin, over the Atlantic Ocean on overnight flights. Bring a classy wrap.
On that note, wear close-toed shoes, and preferably socks as well.
No flip flops. Europeans don't wear them, they aren't supportive when you're standing on long travel days, and, as I say, your toes will be cold.
Put a new outfit in your carry-on in case your hotel room isn't read (more on this later).
Think carefully about your pants. Don't wear jeans or leggings that are exceedingly tight. I like a travel set.

Packing Everything You Need for Your Long Flight

Alright, we've discussed sleeping, snacking, tv, drinking/not drinking! Let's discuss what you need to bring with you on the plane, and what to pack in your carry-on bag.

First things first on the packing front: though it should go without saying, sometimes packing gets the better of us all and we make silly mistakes! Any checked luggage will be very securely out of your hands for your entire voyage. If you have a connection, you may be briefly reunited with your luggage depending on which country you're in, but you also may not. Do not put anything in your checked bag that you may need, such as documents, passports, medications, or keys.

Pack the bags you bring with you onto the plane accordingly. Personally, I bring a tote bag and a roller bag.

What to pack in your carry-on for a long flight:

Whatever it'll take to make me feel human for the journey to the hotel (generally a hair tie/small hair brush, pack of mints, travel toothbrush/toothpaste, eyebrow pencil);
A change of clothes upon arrival, if my luggage gets lost;
Coat or jacket you're bringing for the trip (unless it's extremely cold, I don't want to deal with this on the plane)

Savoring your meals on long haul flights

First Class Dining Ok, ok, the meals might not all look like this, but they aren't bad! (SPC)

It's an oft-repeated trope that "airplane food is terrible." And while I'll agree that it's not the French Laundry, and I'll further agree that food on domestic flights (in the now extremely rare instance that it is provided) isn't great, I think you'll find that international meals really aren't so bad.

One of the things that surprised me most about long flights is the sheer amount of food you are served in transit. These days, the dining experience is one of the main reasons that I now look forward to those flights.

Food & drinks to expect on a typical international flight

Dinner on a transatlantic flight (JSB)

On a "normal" flight from a large U.S. city to a large European one, you can expect to receive:

Kick-off drink (more on drinking, below) and a selection of crunchy snacks (yes, please);
Lunch (generally salad options and one warm option) or Dinner (including bread, main dish from generally a selection of pasta, and two different meat dishes, cheeses, salad, and dessert), accompanied by beverage(s);
Additional beverages and snacks if you go and get them throughout the flight from the flight attendants (they come through more often on a day-time flight); and
Breakfast (generally cheese, muffin, yogurt and orange juice, accompanied by two rounds of coffee and water).

Make your home away from home...as clean as possible

Post-pandemic, we're all a little touchy about germs. No one wants to start off their vacation by getting horribly sick. It's hard to feel comfortable when you think about all the germs every time you touch your seat belt.

I bring a small bag of disinfecting wipes and wipe down the seat belt, tray table, seat, and arm rests quickly when I'm settling in.

It would have made me look a little funny years ago, but I'm not the only one doing it these days. That way I can spend the long hours in my seat feeling a little bit more comfortable, and hopefully avoid that vacation cold.

Entertainment...and SLEEP Tips for International Travel

Keeping yourself entertained during a long-haul flight is one of the top stressors for people who are new to international travel, so I thought we'd discuss that next. And it correlates with the TOP stressor going into an international flight: how on earth am I going to sleep on a loud plane full of hundreds of people?

On an East-bound flight, you'll likely go overnight, which comes with different challenges, with the opposite on a West-bound, so I think it's worth discussing them separately.

East-bound transatlantic flights

For my American friends, this will be the first leg of your European vacation- from the U.S. to Europe. And, the end of the trip for European visitors to the States. I will say that Americans do get the short end of the stick on this one. The East-bound flight is significantly harder, and it's really not the best way to start a long vacation. But, never fear, with some easy tips, you'll do just fine.

And, yes, let's just get this out of the way - you do need to try to sleep, no matter how unnatural it feels.

How to sleep on a long flight

The first couple hours of your international flight will be occupied with the aforementioned dinner, drink, and snack service. Unless you've taken strong medication or are suffering some sleep deprivation, I doubt you'll be able to sleep during that portion, as there's a great deal of noise and the lights are on. After the food rounds have been completed, the cabin lights will go off, and then you need to try to start relaxing.

And then, slap on an eye mask and noise canceling headphones and try to sleep, at least for a bit. The brutal reality is, you will feel strangely the next day, due to jet lag, travel exhaustion, and lack of sleep, but just try for a bit and don't stress too much. If you can't sleep, it's not the end of the world, but as your body is still on its "normal" schedule, you likely will get at least some shut eye.

FAQ: Should I bring a neck pillow to help me sleep on an international flight?

You certainly can bring a neck pillow on a long haul flight. I've never been much of a neck pillow girl myself. I hate having another thing to haul around the airport. But, in the depths of your sleepiness, a little neck support goes a long way toward helping you get some shut eye.

Entertainment options on long flights

Be mindful of your screen time on an overnight flight, as it'll only keep you awake, particularly because the in-seat screen is right in your face. I generally watch a show or two either on the in-seat screen or that I previously downloaded on my phone.

A gentle reminder that you shouldn't plan to engage in a ton of reading from an actual book on the east-bound flight. They will turn off the overhead cabin lights after dinner and while you do have an individual light above your seat, it's not much light, and you'll likely be pressured by your seat mates to turn it off as the night wears on.

If you're truly dedicated to reading on your flight, I'd recommend a personal book light, and you'll need to turn it off at a reasonable time.

Remember: Your AirPods won't connect to the in-seat entertainment system. Depending on the airline and your seating class, the airline may provide "normal old school" headphones, for this reason. But if you're concerned about it, or flying on a budget airline, you can always bring your own.

FAQ: Should I bring noise-canceling headphones on an international flight?

It wasn't until later in my international flight journey that I finally took the plunge and got noise-canceling headphones (well, actually, they were a gift - thanks, Mom!)

Personally, I would say noise-cancelers are worth the splurge. Whether you up for the full over-ear headset option or just the noise-canceling AirPods, being able to block out your fellow travelers is worth its weight in gold. And they aren't all terribly expensive - the over-ear option I recommend here is just $99.

West-bound transatlantic flights

These west-bound, return flights, naturally, are quite different. They're generally during the day, in both your destination and your departure point. If you're coming from Europe to the U.S., you can easily leave Europe at 11 AM Europe time and arrive in the U.S. in the afternoon U.S. time. Transversing a few time zones while you eat snacks and sip cocktails. Of course, you'll be exhausted the next day, but at least you don't have to pretend to sleep.

My suggestion : enjoy your time in the friendly skies! These planes have a wide selection of movies and T.V. shows to watch, much wider than the option on domestic flights - find a new favorite! Delta allows messaging (subject to a variety of restrictions), so why not have a free glass of wine and tell your friends all about you trip?

FAQ: Can I charge my phone on the plane?

Yes. Every long-haul flight I've been on has offered in-seat USB ports or power outlets for phone charging. If you intend to use your phone a lot, it's worth bringing an airline-approved portable charger/external charging device, though personally I've never needed to.

Picking the right seat for your international flight

FAQ: Do I want an aisle seat or a window seat for an international flight?

The traditional wisdom is that frequent travelers and business travelers prefer aisle seats and infrequent travelers or vacationers prefer the window seat. I have largely found this to be true and, as a frequent bathroom user, I am firmly an aisle seat girl.

For international flights, I'd say the "best" seat is likely different depending on the timing of your flight. On your (usually overnight) flight to Europe, when you will want to try to sleep, it may be a good idea to opt for a window seat, since passengers and flight attendants will continue moving up and down the aisles all night, potentially bumping you.

For the return (almost always daytime) leg of your trip, you may prefer an aisle seat, so you can get up and move around, and have easy access to the bathrooms, as needed. And, as always, try at all costs to avoid the middle seat, unless you know all of your travel companions.

FAQ: Where are the best seats on the plane on an international flight?

With trying to sleep firmly in mind, I would try to select seats that are not too close to the kitchens or the bathroom, as people will be constantly standing near you while you are trying to sleep. Generally, you also try to avoid being in the back of the plane, where many of those service stations/bathrooms are.

But remember, on a large, international plane built for a long-haul journey, there are multiple bathrooms and flight attendant service areas.

Look at the map of the plane when picking your seat. Some of the mid-aircraft bathrooms in the middle of the plane are near "upgrade" seats, so you'll pay a premium to have a bathroom line bumping into your knees for 5 hours and the icky bathroom smell. These seats may look enticing, as they may be in a semi-bulkhead or an exit row, but keep an eye on those bathrooms. I made this mistake myself.

That said, airlines can always change aircraft and mess you up!

Ah, the million dollar question. Free booze abounds, but should you drink during a long flight? My advice differs, depending on your direction of travel. Regardless of whether you drink alcohol, be sure to drink plenty of water on your international trip. Flying is dehydrating. Not sleeping well is dehydrating. And drinking is dehydrating. And, of course, travel is dehydrating because you don't have as much access to water as you usually do! So don't forget.

East-Bound Flight: Ok, so, as we've discussed, you need to try to sleep. Getting really loaded is not going to help you sleep AND you're not going to feel good after too many drinks, especially when you can't sleep them off. You do not want to spoil your first day in Europe with a hangover.

My advice: drink the same amount that you might drink on a "normal night." If you regularly drink one glass of wine on a week night, I'd say you can easily do the same, get some semblance of sleep, and even if you can't sleep super well, normally feel fine. If you do not normally drink, this is frankly not the time to start - wait until you've truly started your vacation and hit the pubs.

West-Bound Flight:As long as you don't have to drive your car home from the airport, enjoy this leg of the flight - you don't have sleep to worry about, it'll feel like the middle of the day, and...what else is there to do! I hadn't intended this post to be so heavy on praising Delta, but here we are - don't forget that Delta serves liquor on its long haul flights, unlike most other major airlines which only include beer and wine.

Your friendly, lawyerly reminder: alcohol hits some people differently on a plane. Don't cause a drunken international scandal. And DO NOT MIX DRINKS AND SLEEP AIDS.

FAQ: Should I take sleeping pills on an overnight flight?

I know many people swear by popping a sleeping pill on an international flight. They purport to wake up well-rested and ready-to-vacation. I tried once, didn't sleep well, and felt extremely groggy the entire next day. Personally, I'd skip the pills. If you really want to try a sleep aid, just be sure to try it at home at least once before you try it on the plane. And DO NOT mix it with alcohol.

There's nothing more exciting, or more intimidating, than packing for a trip to Europe. You want to be comfortable, walk 20,000 steps/day, fit in, and, realistically look good in a few pictures throughout your trip. Oh and you have to fit all of this into just a few suitcases that you have to wrangle and wrestle on a few train rides. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of picking the right clothes for your trip to Europe, never fear! You've absolutely come to the right place for Europe packing guidance.

One of my great passions is helping American tourists pack for their trip 'across the pond,' so that they feel comfortable and confident during their time in Europe, while respecting cultural norms.

I hadn't ever been to Europe before our honeymoon (which was a few years ago now), and once I started, I just couldn't stop! We took six trips to Europe in five years, and I became a Europe travel packing pro. I've honed my tips over the years, but a lot of the basics have remained the same, and I update them to change with the times.

So what do people wear in Europe?

In many European cities, everyday style reads a little more polished, traditional, and conservative than what many Americans wear casually at home. While there are sartorial differences that don't matter, or are outweighed by the practicalities of being a tourist, we'll discuss a few simple mistakes you can avoid for a more comfortable trip.

This post has upset some people...

I, and my blog-reading audience, am a little older and looking to fit in. Just because a tourist "can" wear something (Europe is a free society & clothing is not regulated by law) doesn't mean that you will fit in, look good, or feel comfortable. I don't think my European readers are aware of how casually Americans dress.
Some of my suggestions apply to both fashion AND tourist comfort. As a tourist, I would never wear flip flops in Paris. You will look silly AND your feet will be filthy and painful. If I lived in Paris and were just running to my local grocery store, not walking 20,000 steps/day, I would dress differently.

Beach Flip Flops

The first items you should never wear in Europe is cheap, worn out Old Navy beach flip flops. You can expect to do A LOT OF WALKING, and to take as many as 20,000 steps per day while exploring Europe. Comfortable shoes, especially comfortable walking shoes, are the most important item to bring with you to Europe.

I always bring a clean, low-profile sneaker like these. Please select your comfortable walking shoes today and start breaking them in. In addition to comfort, while European cities are no more dirty than American ones (in fact, likely the opposite), you do not want to have filthy feet throughout your trip.

You will simply not see a chic Parisian woman in plastic beach flip flops. If you'll be visiting a beach resort, I'd pack nice sandals. Even in summer, many nicer restaurants and even some theaters will have dress codes that prohibit certain types of attire, including flip flops. Can I wear white sneakers in Europe?

If I were writing this post a few years ago, even when I first started my blog 6 years ago, there would have been an entire section dedicated to me lecturing you on how wearing white sneakers in Europe is the ultimate faux pas. But not so, today! Europeans also wear sneakers in everyday life, not just to the gym. Make sure your sneakers are in good shape, newer, and clean. I tend to suggest a simple, sleek, white, canvas or leather sneaker. If Kate Middleton can wear them, we can too.

Revealing Shorts

Next up on the list of items you should never wear in Europe: short shorts. The reasons are fairly similar to the objections I raised to beach flip flops. First, Europeans tend to wear longer shorts than Americans, in part because (with the exception of recently), it's just not as hot.

Second, Europeans show less skin and you'll feel and look half naked. Third, revealing shorts are often prohibited by dress codes at religious sites, particularly in southern European countries. I'd hate for anyone to miss seeing a gorgeous, small church on a random corner in Rome because you're inappropriately dressed. (Fun fact: in Italy, there are still quite a few famous art works housed in situ, so you may need to visit churches to see pieces on your list!).

Finally, as you'll be likely be relying on public transit, you do not want to have your bare thighs touching the dirty seats on a metro.

Tank tops, tube tops, midriff-exposing tops

For the same reasons I've described above, your trip to Europe, even in summer, is not the time to wear your skimpiest clothing. If you are planning to wear a shirt that reveals your shoulders, consider investing in a travel wrap, in the event you want to enter a space with a dress code or a church with a modesty request.

Tight skinny jeans

As a Millennial myself, I have had to make the transition away from skinny jeans to looser, more trendy jeans.

The same applies in Europe. I actually realized skinny jeans were going out of style during a trip to Paris and saw all those cool French teens rocking the loose jeans we've all come to know and love. I'd also avoid really destroyed jeans. While color is less of an issue (light jeans or dark jeans are OK), as long as the jeans are clean and fit correctly.

Can you wear jeans in Europe?

Yes. European women wear classic blue jeans, and younger Europeans wear distressed, baggy, etc. jeans. That said, be sure that you bring non-denim pants, if you'll be visiting upmarket restaurants or theaters, which sometimes have dress codes that ban jeans.

Leggings as pants

Ah yes, we have finally reached one of the more common topics people ask me about - can I wear leggings/yoga pants in Europe?

Short answer? I wouldn't, unless you're younger than me and most of my target audience. European women do wear yoga pants, but differently than we do. Trench coat, leggings, high socks, sneakers? I'll allow it. Ratty work-out leggings paired with whatever top you happened to bring? You simply will stand out.

Invest in some great travel pants. You'll thank me, not just for your vacation to Europe.

Athletic Wear for Everyday

And on that topic, unlike in the US, the athleisure craze has not swept Europe to the same extent it has in the US. As a stay-at-home mom, I literally wear nothing but Lululemon most days of the week in the US. It's not the same in major European cities.

While athleisure wear creeps in on the edges (joggers!), you will not see tons of people walking around in Paris looking like they're about to go to the gym. Instead, I wear re-wearable travel pants and a classic trench that pulls everything together.

Baseball Caps for Women

Similarly, you won't be surprised to learn that, similarly, baseball caps for women are not all the rage in Europe. We Americans invented baseball, and we invented the "I wear a baseball cap because I'm a busy mom vibe."

While I'm all for being casual and comfortable on your vacation, I would recommend against wearing a baseball cap. If you're worried about sun, invest in some sunscreen, and if you'll be in southern Europe, a small sun hat. And, if you must wear a baseball cap, wear one without a logo.

Graphic Tees

Nothing screams American like bright colors, loud colors, and graphic t-shirts. Leave the slogans, jokes, and political t-shirts at home, unless you're really signing yourself up for some unwanted attention.

Huge Bags and Purses

Large bags / travel backpacks make you look like a tourist, and an open tote is a pickpocket's dream. I'd recommend a small, leather or canvas crossbody bag to carry only essential items while you're out and about. While a belt bag (formerly known as a 'fanny pack') would have been a faux pas in the past, I'd say you can feel comfortable using one of those as well. If you're particularly concerned about pickpockets, there's always the tourist standby of the money belt, which my husband has worn on trips where we've carried more cash.

A secure purse can make a big difference when you're sightseeing in Europe all day. Lucky you! Whether it's your first transatlantic flight or your fifth, long haul flights can be intimidating. But they don't need to be. I didn't actually travel to Europe for the first time until our honeymoon when I was 26. I feel like it has given me some special insight into how intimidating these trips can be, since I didn't grow up taking them, and how "worth it" the travel is.

That said, with a bit more information, and with a few easy tips, I'll have you sailing through your flight to Europe, without fear, so you can get onto the more important business of actually enjoying your trip.

{2026} 12+ Tips for a Comfortable Long Flight to Europe

Wear the right shoes
From the minute you begin your journey at your local airport, lugging your suitcases out of your trunk, walking to a shuttle, and, of course, going through security (thankfully this is less of an issue than it used to be!!!), and hauling through the airport to your gate, wearing the "right" shoes is obviously important. You'll want great walking shoes that won't give you blisters on Day 1.

You'll also want to select shoes that can serve a few other purposes.

Your shoes should be shoes you'll actually want to wear in Europe. So while they certainly can be sneakers (yes, you can wear sneakers in Europe), they should be clean, in good condition, broken in, and have minimal logos. Some logos are fine (Adidas), but try for more neutral colors that will match more of your outfits, and avoid anything too flashy.

Additionally, please, please, please do not wear sandals on a transatlantic flight. Not only are they generally not the shoes you'll want for your trip, but your feet will freeze!! It gets cold on the floor of the airplane over the Atlantic in the middle of the night. Wear close-toed shoes, preferably with socks.

FAQ: Should I wear compression socks on a long haul flight to Europe?

Loose-fitting clothing
Whatever outfit you put on at 2PM in Indianapolis will stick with you all that day, through the night, and into the early morning in Europe. You'll still be wearing it at 9AM Madrid time. So your international flight outfit should :

Be comfortable
Have layers
Not include a tired pair of leggings as pants (sorry! They're uncomfortably tight on a long flight and look like PJ's in Europe, unless you style them exactly perfectly)

FAQ: Is flying first class to Europe worth it?

This is a tough question to answer. Flying first class to Europe is almost unbelievably expensive. If it is within your price range and a lie-flat seat is tempting you, one great way to save money is to do First Class only on the flight to Europe, and to fly in a less expensive class on the flight home, when you'll be awake anyway. If First Class isn't an option, but you'd like to 'treat yourself,' I'd recommend upgrading to Business Class (if the flight has it - many don't) or even Premium Economy, which can give you a few extra perks, without the hefty, First Class price tag.

Think through your seat choice
If you are able to choose, should you pick a window seat or an aisle seat for a long haul flight?

A few things to consider when selecting a seat:

Location of other family members
Mid-flight bathroom usage (for me- the deciding factor)
How bothered will you be by people bumping you, walking up the aisle?
Sleep position (lots of people want the window to sleep on)

The common wisdom is that frequent flyers select the aisle, and less frequent travelers will opt for the window. This has held true in my experience. I don't like asking people to get up so I can go to the restroom, and if they're asleep, that's especially difficult. Conversely, I don't mind getting up for others.

Bring a bag you can access during flight
While I would very, very strongly advise against using a "tote bag" as your purse during your time exploring Europe, I would equally strongly encourage you to bring a tote bag with you on the long flight. Bring a bag you can fold up or leave in your hotel room when you're on your trip. You'll want it on the flight, to slide under the seat so you can access it during the flight. This should go without saying, but do not expect to be able to get into the overhead bin during the flight at any time. There are lots of food and beverage services and, while less than on a lot of domestic flights, there will still be period of turbulence when you should remain seated.

Stick to the "schedule" of the flight
Transatlantic flights have a rhythm and a schedule. Go with the flow. You will be happiest if you do not fight the machine. When the lights turn off, don't try to read a book. Try to sleep like everyone else. And I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the food. Yes, I've had better, but the food is generally edible and will power you through!

Careful on the screen time
Speaking of the schedule of the flight, be careful with the screen time on 'night flights.' When the overhead lights turn off, you will still see a lot of people watching shows and movies, as it's generally not that late. But after an hour or so, the TVs will slowly start turning off.

I always pre-loud hours and hours of audiobooks onto my phone to be sure I will have plenty to listen to as I try to sleep, and if I can't. Any sleep specialist would recommend against having a screen blaring in your face when you're trying to rest!

Don't forget the noise-canceling headphones
As much as I lecture about sticking to the schedule of the flight, and I will reiterate that most people do and conversations etc will pretty much cease overnight, nothing is perfect. I was on a flight to Spain with a hysterical baby who cried for 5 solid hours. Bring those noise cancelling headphones. Preferably the over-ear ones, but the noise cancelling AirPods work too!

FAQ: Should I bring a travel pillow and eye mask on an international flight?

The general consensus is yes, a good neck pillow make it easier to get some shut-eye during a long journey. If you bring that tote bag that can fit it, I'd say go for it! I'll also admit that I generally don't bring one because I'm already carrying so much *stuff.* Many airlines will give you an eye mask on international flights. They do help block out the minimal light in the airplane cabins when you're trying to sleep on an overnight flight, especially if you are seated near the bathroom or have a neighbor who won't turn their light off, etc.

Don't overdo it on the alcohol...drink water, and think twice about sleep aids
One of the fun things about transatlantic flights is that they are significantly nicer and more fun than domestic flights. The planes are bigger, the flight attendants are friendlier, the other passengers are happier because they're almost exclusively on vacation, there is food, and the alcohol is free!

But don't let that derail your plans. Two drinks is plenty for me, and then it's time to snooze! Don't derail your first day in Europe with no sleep AND a hangover. Drink plenty of water on a long haul flight, like you would on a domestic flight, and even more if you're consuming alcohol. It's a long time to be up in the dry air on these long-haul journeys.

And a note on sleep aids...
On my second trip to Europe, I decided it would be a good idea to take some Benadryl to try to sleep on the plane. Dear Reader, this was not a good idea. I didn't sleep any better than I had without the medication, but that also meant I wasn't able to "sleep off" the Benadryl. My first day in Edinburgh was a hazy, jet lag mess to say the least, and that's before I even got to sample any of that delicious whisky...

FAQ: Can I bring my own food and drink on a flight to Europe?

You can bring food and drink with you onto the plane. The flights generally leave later in the evening, so you could also eat dinner in the airport before you take-off, if you're not interested in eating the airplane food. That said, the airplane food on international flights isn't too bad. If you do bring food with you, as always, I'd encourage you to be mindful of your fellow travelers and not bring something pungent. You CANNOT drink alcohol that you brought with you onto the flight yourself, so don't get any ideas about Duty Free. It's gotta stay in the bag/box.

Searching for the perfect purse for your Europe trip?

I love nothing more than helping Americans prepare for their trips to Europe, particularly in the shopping and packing space. While traveling to Europe is certainly not 'all about' what you're wearing, feeling comfortable and having the right items for your trip can really help you enjoy your vacation and spend that precious time 'across the pond' efficiently.

I always say: the three most important items you'll need for your trip to Europe are the best pairs of comfortable walking shoes, the right jacket, and the perfect travel purse. After traveling through Europe multiple times, I’ve learned that the right bag makes a huge difference, especially in busy cities, on trains, and during long walking days. I always use a small crossbody bag that’s secure, lightweight, and easy to wear all day.

Alright! With the intro complete, we can move onto walking through two sections, and finally onto the purse recommendations. First, we'll talk about a few high-level ideas to keep in mind when picking a purse for Europe. And then we will move onto the 6 essential qualities that the purse you select should have.

A few things to keep in mind when purse shopping for Europe:

Be realistic about how much you actually need to bring in your everyday purse

One of the easiest pitfalls when packing for any trip, especially a long one in a foreign country (or multiple foreign countries!), is to overpack. I strongly recommend resisting this impulse, both with your actual luggage and with what you want to carry with you on a daily basis. Be VERY strict with yourself about what you want to have on your person for 20,000+ steps per day.

At a maximum, I would have these items in my purse:

Cell phone
One or two credit cards (don't forget to warn the company that you'll be traveling abroad, especially if you didn't buy your tickets on that card)
A small amount of cash in the local currency
Hotel keys & car key (if you rented a car. Leave your house key in your hotel room)
Driver's license (DO NOT put your passport in your purse. Too easy to lose it. Not really a huge deal if you lose your driver's license. You can get another one when you get home).
Essential medications
1 or 2 Bandaids
Hand sanitizer

This is not contemplating the idea that you could be traveling with a small child/diaper bag. If you are, we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Do you really want to check your bag at museums?

Many (most) major museums, and some 'tourist attractions,' will insist that you either check a large back in the 'clock room' or wear it on your front. I'd avoid this if you can, as there is often a large line in the morning of people checking, and then in the afternoon of people recouping, their large bags.

Fun fact: If you're worried about suitcases/backpacks at the beginning or end of your trip, almost every hotel will keep your bags for you. If you're checking out in the morning and want to go run around before your flight, just leave your bags at the hotel if at all possible.

Think about the airplane logistics

Stay with me: the fact I'm pressuring you into carrying a small purse for day-to-day tourism does NOT mean you are limited to a small purse on your flights.

I bring a small, reasonably collapsible tote bag on my flight. I use my "tourism purse" that will be for everyday use as my 'wallet' and keep it inside my tote and the tote is my airplane "personal item." That allows me to have a spacious bag for my travel days, that can hold a water bottle, snacks, reading material, etc., and then I just leave it in my hotel room during my time in Europe. Be sure that it's small enough to fit on the floor in front of you, or they'll make you put it into the overhead bins where it's harder to access it during the flight.

Let's talk about pickpockets

The reality of visiting any tourist destination, not just in Europe, is that where there are tourists, there are going to be some pickpockets. I don't say this to make you paranoid, but to save you from a bad situation. There are a few easy things you can do to keep yourself and your possessions safe during your time in Europe:

Make sure your purse zips fully and keep it closed when you're walking around. Arden Cov e makes a number of pickpocket-proof purses.
Only carry essentials with you. If at all possible, it's a good idea to leave your passport and most of your cash in your hotel/hotel safe.
Don't leave your purse on the ground under your seat at a restaurant. Keep it in your lap, or leave it on if it's a crossbody bag (I'm just going to keep bringing them up).
Don't talk to strangers. The scams are always changing, but pickpockets and con artists often work in pairs. For example, a common one in Paris: a person (often a woman or young person) will ask you to sign a petition in support of something really, really sympathetic. Last time we were there it was "disabilities" and a huge picture of a wheelchair. While the tourist is navigating this and trying to be polite, an accomplice will pickpocket them. Just keep walking. Or pretend you don't understand them.

How to look like a local in Europe

With the exception of students, you won't see adult Europeans going about their daily activities wearing backpacks. European women tend to carry small, usually leather, purses.

With the exception of a very few luxury logos, and even with those, keep logos to a minimum. And, even with luxury logos, showing up head-to-toe in Louis Vuitton is not going to make you appear 'classy' in Paris. Europeans, especially wealthy ones, are far more understated than we are.

Don't go overboard

I love clothes and dressing up, but I've never brought more than 2 purses to Europe at the absolute maximum. I'd try to keep it to one, unless you're attending a wedding or extremely fancy dinner.

6+ Qualities Your Purse for Europe Should Have

The best purse for a trip to Europe should have the qualities below. Ready to shop? Skip to the bottom for my actual purse finds after a few hours of scouring the internet and Nordstrom (always hard at work, I am!)

1. Oh-So-Small

Overall, the purse you bring to Europe should be small, offering you quick access to the limited number of items you'll need on a daily basis. Give yourself plenty of room (it can be more than a wallet on a chain) for your phone, cards, keys, some cash, and hand sanitizer.

FAQ: Should I carry a water bottle in Europe?

This is a matter of budget, personal preference, environmental concern, and bag size. While I use a reusable water bottle (and bring my own bags to the grocery), I forgo this in Europe. I do not want to carry a purse large enough for a water bottle. I drink water at meals, and occasionally will buy a disposable bottle if I run into a cafe or Pret a Manger to use the restroom, and then keep it with me for as long as I like, or refill it throughout the day. There are plenty of places to fill bottles in public in Europe, if it is your preference. Rome has stunning public fountains for this purpose.

2. Light weight

Both the purse itself and the contents should be as light as possible. 20,000+ steps is a lot of steps in a day and hauling around a heavy purse isn't going to make those tourism days any shorter. I'd hate for you to slowly tip sideways as the significant weight of your ill-conceived shoulder bag jammed with too much stuff drags you down.

FAQ: Can I carry a luxury bag as a tourist in Europe?

Of course! As long as it adheres to the other tips (closes, small, hands-free). And, remember, Americans wear far more logos than Europeans. Parisians even turn their Chanel logos inward. So don't think you need to be covered in logos to fit in. For Italy, consider Ferragamo (or buy one in Florence, like I did!)

3. Hands-free

Ideally, opt for a crossbody purse, or at least a purse with a shoulder strap long enough that you don't have to keep pushing it back up onto your shoulder all day. You want your hands free for getting on and off public transportation, opening doors, carrying new purchases, and holding hands as you stroll in Rome - not clutching a purse.

FAQ: Can you wear a fanny pack in Europe?

Yes! You can wear a "fanny pack" or Lululemon belt bag with an adjustable strap across your torso, like we do here in The States, with a few ground rules. If possible, I'd go for a leather bag, just to fit in better, and look less "athletic." Additionally, if you're going with the nylon material bag or a canvas material, I would bring a different purse if you'll be going to high-end restaurants, the theater, high-end shopping.

4. Zips fully

As we've discussed, whatever purse you've selected simply must zip fully, to protect against pickpockets. No matter how cute a purse is, it's not worth losing your peace of mind worrying about someone reaching into your wide open tote bag.

FAQ: Do I need an anti-theft bag for my trip to Europe?

If you are interested, there are many anti-theft purses to be had, often fairly inexpensively. They also come in cuter styles than they used to (see, e.g. this water-resistant cross-body bag).

Generally, an anti-theft purse offers strong zippers and extra compartments to protect you from pickpockets. Some even have lockable zippers and they rarely have an outside pocket. Another option is a money belt, worn under the clothes, containing your valuables.

5. Water-resistant

The reality of any long trip is the risk of rain, and your purse, and your shoes, should be able to survive if you get caught in a sudden downpour. The ability to survive could be because it is small and can be tucked into your coat, or because it is made from a water resistant material, or both. This is particularly important if you're visiting my favorite place in the world: soggy London.

6. Stylish, of course

And don't worry - I haven't forgotten what matters most to me on my domestic bag purchases: style. How to fit in with the Europeans? Stick to neutral color options, far fewer logos (if any), clean and classic silhouettes and you'll fit right in.

Anti-theft bags

Essential if you're visiting in the height of summer, or cities where pickpockets are particularly active, like Barcelona. I recommend a bag from Arden Cove, which sells classy anti-theft bags.

Polished everyday bags

For higher-end trips, or fancier cities, I go for a more 'traditional' purse. Demelier has some lovely options.

Lightweight/casual
