Searching for the perfect purse for your Europe trip?

I love nothing more than helping Americans prepare for their trips to Europe, particularly in the shopping and packing space. While traveling to Europe is certainly not 'all about' what you're wearing, feeling comfortable and having the right items for your trip can really help you enjoy your vacation and spend that precious time 'across the pond' efficiently.

I always say: the three most important items you'll need for your trip to Europe are the best pairs of comfortable walking shoes, the right jacket, and the perfect travel purse. After traveling through Europe multiple times, I’ve learned that the right bag makes a huge difference, especially in busy cities, on trains, and during long walking days. I always use a small crossbody bag that’s secure, lightweight, and easy to wear all day.

Alright! With the intro complete, we can move onto walking through two sections, and finally onto the purse recommendations. First, we'll talk about a few high-level ideas to keep in mind when picking a purse for Europe. And then we will move onto the 6 essential qualities that the purse you select should have.

A few things to keep in mind when purse shopping for Europe:

Be realistic about how much you actually need to bring in your everyday purse

One of the easiest pitfalls when packing for any trip, especially a long one in a foreign country (or multiple foreign countries!), is to overpack. I strongly recommend resisting this impulse, both with your actual luggage and with what you want to carry with you on a daily basis. Be VERY strict with yourself about what you want to have on your person for 20,000+ steps per day.

At a maximum, I would have these items in my purse:

Cell phone
One or two credit cards (don't forget to warn the company that you'll be traveling abroad, especially if you didn't buy your tickets on that card)
A small amount of cash in the local currency
Hotel keys & car key (if you rented a car. Leave your house key in your hotel room)
Driver's license (DO NOT put your passport in your purse. Too easy to lose it. Not really a huge deal if you lose your driver's license. You can get another one when you get home).
Essential medications
1 or 2 Bandaids
Hand sanitizer

This is not contemplating the idea that you could be traveling with a small child/diaper bag. If you are, we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Do you really want to check your bag at museums?

Many (most) major museums, and some 'tourist attractions,' will insist that you either check a large back in the 'clock room' or wear it on your front. I'd avoid this if you can, as there is often a large line in the morning of people checking, and then in the afternoon of people recouping, their large bags.

Fun fact: If you're worried about suitcases/backpacks at the beginning or end of your trip, almost every hotel will keep your bags for you. If you're checking out in the morning and want to go run around before your flight, just leave your bags at the hotel if at all possible.

Think about the airplane logistics

Stay with me: the fact I'm pressuring you into carrying a small purse for day-to-day tourism does NOT mean you are limited to a small purse on your flights.

I bring a small, reasonably collapsible tote bag on my flight. I use my "tourism purse" that will be for everyday use as my 'wallet' and keep it inside my tote and the tote is my airplane "personal item." That allows me to have a spacious bag for my travel days, that can hold a water bottle, snacks, reading material, etc., and then I just leave it in my hotel room during my time in Europe. Be sure that it's small enough to fit on the floor in front of you, or they'll make you put it into the overhead bins where it's harder to access it during the flight.

Let's talk about pickpockets

The reality of visiting any tourist destination, not just in Europe, is that where there are tourists, there are going to be some pickpockets. I don't say this to make you paranoid, but to save you from a bad situation. There are a few easy things you can do to keep yourself and your possessions safe during your time in Europe:

Make sure your purse zips fully and keep it closed when you're walking around. Arden Cov e makes a number of pickpocket-proof purses.
Only carry essentials with you. If at all possible, it's a good idea to leave your passport and most of your cash in your hotel/hotel safe.
Don't leave your purse on the ground under your seat at a restaurant. Keep it in your lap, or leave it on if it's a crossbody bag (I'm just going to keep bringing them up).
Don't talk to strangers. The scams are always changing, but pickpockets and con artists often work in pairs. For example, a common one in Paris: a person (often a woman or young person) will ask you to sign a petition in support of something really, really sympathetic. Last time we were there it was "disabilities" and a huge picture of a wheelchair. While the tourist is navigating this and trying to be polite, an accomplice will pickpocket them. Just keep walking. Or pretend you don't understand them.

How to look like a local in Europe

With the exception of students, you won't see adult Europeans going about their daily activities wearing backpacks. European women tend to carry small, usually leather, purses.

With the exception of a very few luxury logos, and even with those, keep logos to a minimum. And, even with luxury logos, showing up head-to-toe in Louis Vuitton is not going to make you appear 'classy' in Paris. Europeans, especially wealthy ones, are far more understated than we are.

Don't go overboard

I love clothes and dressing up, but I've never brought more than 2 purses to Europe at the absolute maximum. I'd try to keep it to one, unless you're attending a wedding or extremely fancy dinner.

6+ Qualities Your Purse for Europe Should Have

The best purse for a trip to Europe should have the qualities below. Ready to shop? Skip to the bottom for my actual purse finds after a few hours of scouring the internet and Nordstrom (always hard at work, I am!)

1. Oh-So-Small

Overall, the purse you bring to Europe should be small, offering you quick access to the limited number of items you'll need on a daily basis. Give yourself plenty of room (it can be more than a wallet on a chain) for your phone, cards, keys, some cash, and hand sanitizer.

FAQ: Should I carry a water bottle in Europe?

This is a matter of budget, personal preference, environmental concern, and bag size. While I use a reusable water bottle (and bring my own bags to the grocery), I forgo this in Europe. I do not want to carry a purse large enough for a water bottle. I drink water at meals, and occasionally will buy a disposable bottle if I run into a cafe or Pret a Manger to use the restroom, and then keep it with me for as long as I like, or refill it throughout the day. There are plenty of places to fill bottles in public in Europe, if it is your preference. Rome has stunning public fountains for this purpose.

2. Light weight

Both the purse itself and the contents should be as light as possible. 20,000+ steps is a lot of steps in a day and hauling around a heavy purse isn't going to make those tourism days any shorter. I'd hate for you to slowly tip sideways as the significant weight of your ill-conceived shoulder bag jammed with too much stuff drags you down.

FAQ: Can I carry a luxury bag as a tourist in Europe?

Of course! As long as it adheres to the other tips (closes, small, hands-free). And, remember, Americans wear far more logos than Europeans. Parisians even turn their Chanel logos inward. So don't think you need to be covered in logos to fit in. For Italy, consider Ferragamo (or buy one in Florence, like I did!)

3. Hands-free

Ideally, opt for a crossbody purse, or at least a purse with a shoulder strap long enough that you don't have to keep pushing it back up onto your shoulder all day. You want your hands free for getting on and off public transportation, opening doors, carrying new purchases, and holding hands as you stroll in Rome - not clutching a purse.

FAQ: Can you wear a fanny pack in Europe?

Yes! You can wear a "fanny pack" or Lululemon belt bag with an adjustable strap across your torso, like we do here in The States, with a few ground rules. If possible, I'd go for a leather bag, just to fit in better, and look less "athletic." Additionally, if you're going with the nylon material bag or a canvas material, I would bring a different purse if you'll be going to high-end restaurants, the theater, high-end shopping.

4. Zips fully

As we've discussed, whatever purse you've selected simply must zip fully, to protect against pickpockets. No matter how cute a purse is, it's not worth losing your peace of mind worrying about someone reaching into your wide open tote bag.

FAQ: Do I need an anti-theft bag for my trip to Europe?

If you are interested, there are many anti-theft purses to be had, often fairly inexpensively. They also come in cuter styles than they used to (see, e.g. this water-resistant cross-body bag).

Generally, an anti-theft purse offers strong zippers and extra compartments to protect you from pickpockets. Some even have lockable zippers and they rarely have an outside pocket. Another option is a money belt, worn under the clothes, containing your valuables.

5. Water-resistant

The reality of any long trip is the risk of rain, and your purse, and your shoes, should be able to survive if you get caught in a sudden downpour. The ability to survive could be because it is small and can be tucked into your coat, or because it is made from a water resistant material, or both. This is particularly important if you're visiting my favorite place in the world: soggy London.

6. Stylish, of course

And don't worry - I haven't forgotten what matters most to me on my domestic bag purchases: style. How to fit in with the Europeans? Stick to neutral color options, far fewer logos (if any), clean and classic silhouettes and you'll fit right in.

Anti-theft bags

Essential if you're visiting in the height of summer, or cities where pickpockets are particularly active, like Barcelona. I recommend a bag from Arden Cove, which sells classy anti-theft bags.

Polished everyday bags

For higher-end trips, or fancier cities, I go for a more 'traditional' purse. Demelier and Longchamp are my go-tos here.

Lightweight/casual

Wondering what to wear on a long haul flight to Europe?

Planning for your first European vacation is exciting, addictive, and occasionally overwhelming. You're trying to do and see all the historic sites, stay in the best hotels within budget and of course within walking distance of...everything, oh and never eat in a tourist trap restaurant. And you're doing all this planning with really no experience to fall back on, if you're never actually been 'across the pond!'

And planning for that dream Europe trip is so time-consuming, in addition to planning the trip itself, that people often put off deciding what to wear on the Transatlantic flight until the minute they're walking out the door. I'd encourage you to plan your airplane outfit well in advance (congrats, you're already following my directions!)

Long-haul flights can be intimidating. Whether it's your first or your tenth, you know you'll be trapped in a little metal tube in the sky with a few hundred strangers for an undefined period of time. But, never fear, with the right preparation I can have you avoiding all of the classic travel pitfalls and finding the exact right outfit for your transatlantic flight.

Travel Schedule of a Typical American's Trip to Europe

Many first time travelers underestimate the amount of time they will be in-transit getting to Europe. I thought I'd walk you through a typical travel day/night/morning trip to Europe, so you can get a sense of how you'll want to be dressed. We come from Indianapolis, which has limited direct flights to Europe, so obviously some lucky people coming from New York and bigger markets will be fortunate enough not to deal with a connection on the U.S. end. When possible, we do our connection in the U.S., so that when we get off the overnight flight, we don't have another connection to deal with in Europe.
2 PM: Leave house for airport
4:30 PM First Flight
8:30 PM Overnight Flight to Europe
(boarding, etc. takes a very long time)
Fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Eat dinner, be served drinks, etc.
6 AM Local time: Arrive in Europe
Customs, border protection, get bags, get to local transportation
9/10 AM Local time: Arrive at hotel
10-11 AM Local Time
Wander around the city doing some tourism until your room is ready

9+ Surprising Things You Should Never Wear on a Flight to Europe
(and what to wear instead!)

Flip Flops/Sandals

There is no reason on earth that you should ever wear flip flops on a long flight. First of all, even with TSA shoe-removal updates, there's still no guarantee you won't have to remove your shoes, either Stateside or in Europe.

Second, the floor of the airplane gets surprisingly cold during long haul flights. Trust me, you don't want to be freezing on an overnight flight. Finally, you want to arrive in your destination looking nice. Even if you are going to be spending a lot of time at the beach, cheap beach flip flops, for example, are not worn across cultures. Europeans never wear them and you will stand out.

So what shoes *should* you wear on a flight to Europe? Comfortable shoes are the most important element of packing fora trip to Europe. On the plane, I would wear the bulkiest shoes you're going to take on your trip, to save space in your suitcase. If you're bringing boots or booties, I'd wear those. If not, I'd wear low-profile sneakers. They're comfortable for a long trip, and you can easily wear them to start your trip off 'on the right foot' when you arrive! Leave the high heels at home.

While slip-on shoes may be appealing, I would try to opt for socks, if possible, both for security and because of the chilly floor issue at high altitudes at night.

FAQ: Do I need to wear compression socks on a long haul flight to Europe?

That depends! There are various medical issues that can cause swelling at high altitudes. If you have a predisposition for blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, then absolutely consult with your doctor before your flight about investing in a pair of compression socks to encourage blood flow. If you aren't aware of any conditions that predispose you to swelling or clotting, then it's up to you. I've never worn compression socks on an international flight and haven't ever experienced swelling, personally. Consult your doctor if you're concerned.

Tight Jeans

Leave the skinny jeans at home! Not only are they out of style, but tight jeans are the last thing you want to sit around in during your travel day, night, and morning, which could be more than 12 hours. Opt for looser fitting pants in breathable fabrics, with a relaxed waistband. Joggers are a good choice. If you have comfortable leggings, they'll probably be ok, but be sure you have a shirt long enough to cover your booty. We'll discuss this in more detail later, but Europeans don't wear leggings-as-pants like Americans.

FAQ: Can I wear blue jeans in Europe?

Yes! Europeans wear jeans. Just ensure that your denim is not overly distressed. European tend toward well-tailored jeans in modern silhouettes. As long as they aren't the jeans you mow the lawn in, you'll be just fine.

Skimpy/Distressed/Bike/ and/or
Denim Shorts

Sticking to the pants trend (don't forget: the Brits call underwear "pants," so use this term with care!), even in summer's warmer weather, I wouldn't wear short, short, short, shorts on a long haul flight.

It gets cold on the plane at night over the Atlantic Ocean, and those little airplane blankets don't do much to warm up bare legs. And, finally, Europeans don't wear shorts like Americans, so you may feel very exposed upon arrival.

For long travel days, the best pants are loose and breathable, with that relaxed waistband.

A Skimpy Shirt
(without a sweater)

Take my word for it- you do not want to be crammed up against the outer reaches of the plane, in the window seat, freezing in a crop top or a tank top, with your exposed arms covered in goose bumps. International, overnight flights are long and chilly. A shortsleeved t-shirt is fine, if you packing a cozy cardigan, or practical wrap.

Pajamas

While it may be tempting to take the "comfortable clothes" idea as far as possible and just wear your pajamas to the airport, and I know people do it, please don't. You are in public, going on an exciting adventure, and you have to wear those clothes when you arrive at your hotel. If you room isn't ready, you may need to spend several hours exploring your European destination before you have time to change. Please don't wander around Rome in your flannel pajama pants.

Head-to-Toe Athleisure Wear

On the theme of needing to be ready for your trip when you land, *full* athleisure is probably not the best idea either. You can absolutely wear joggers, leggings, a (nice, clean) sweatshirt, or a windbreaker, but *do not* wear a yoga bra as a shirt or anything middriff revealing. As we discussed, Europeans don't wear athleisure like Americans, do you will stand out like a sore thumb upon arrival.

Want to keep this simple?

If you don’t want to think about this too much, I’ve already pulled together everything I wear on a Europe travel day—comfortable, mix-and-match pieces that work for both the flight and your first day.

A Winter Coat

While I'll always advocate for extra layers, both on a flight to Europe and once you arrive in your European destination, for the flight itself, I would avoid bringing your winter coat.

Depending on where you're visiting and when, you might not need your winter coat at all.

But if you are bringing it, put it in your checked bag. A winter coat is too bulky to accommodate anywhere in the increasingly cramped flight conditions of modern flying, and chances that you'll truly need it in the States or your destination immediately are very slim. If it's the cooler months, I'd opt for a light jacket on the flight itself, which you can easily take off and store in your purse or under the seat.

Full Make-Up

Moving on from clothes, I thought we'd discuss make-up for a bit before we wrap up. As you can see from the schedule we discussed above, you are in for a long travel day. As I've made clear with my strictures on wearing pajamas and my entire blog dedicated to 'what to wear in Europe,' I am very conscious about wanting to look nice on vacation. But on a long haul, overnight flight to Europe, glamorous make up probably isn't the name of the game, especially eye make-up. You'll want to try to sleep on the flight and it will get smudged and fall into your eyes.
On a flight to Europe, the only make-up I generally wear is:

Primer
Tinted moisturizer
Blush
Eye brow pencil/filler
Chapstick

If we're staying at a particularly nice hotel, I have put mascara in my purse before, to just try to spruce up slightly before arrival, but they're used to seeing bedraggled Americans getting off of planes!

A Teeny, Tiny Bag

I have lots of thoughts on the best purses for a trip to Europe. For the *trip itself* you'll want a small, lightweight, crossbody purse that zips fully. More thoughts on this in The Ultimate Guide to Packing 10 Days in Europe.

For the flight 'across the pond,' however, I always bring a lightweight tote. I put my actual travel purse into it, as a wallet. This way, I can put water bottles, books, my wrap, headphones, etc all into the tote, under my seat, where I have easy access during the long hours of the flight.

Packing is one of the best ways to get excited for a long-awaited trip (that and reading excellent, helpful travel blogs!). I research the weather at my destination, try to get my itinerary nailed down, and think through the logistics of how many suitcases I can bring and whether we'll be moving hotels.

The goal of the packing process is to have enough outfits to look nice during my entire trip, all the way from the minute I step onto the plane, all the way throughout my experience trudging all around those winding, cobblestone streets.

To have enough clothes for your week and a half in Europe, you're likely going to need one large, checked bag along with your one purse/tote for the plane. Yes, you absolutely 'can' pack everything you need for 10 days in Europe in a carry-on, should you wish. But, remember, on a standard transatlantic flight on a non-budget airline, you can generally check 2 bags at no extra cost. You'll want to confirm this with your ticket, but, to me, it's worth just checking them. FAQ: What is the best luggage for Europe?

The best tip I can give you about selecting luggage for a trip to Europe is to remember how tiny European hotel rooms are, even at nice hotels. Therefore, I'd suggest avoiding hard-shelled suitcases that unzip down the middle and flop open. Opt, instead for a more traditional style bag that unzips just at the top so you can get the contents out, like this.

What to Wear on Long Haul Flights to Europe

A lot of people throw on clothes and run to the airport to hop on that transatlantic flight to Europe. This is the first, and perhaps the most critical, Europe *packing* mistake. You're missing an opportunity to transport clothes to Europe efficiently (on you!) and make yourself more comfortable during and after your long flight.

Say hello to your new home for 9 hours (SPC)

Your airplane outfit should

be comfortable on the plane,
look nice enough that you'll feel comfortable arriving at your hotel wearing it. You're going to be wearing it during your first bit of time in the city you're so excited to visit.
not wrinkle easily.
include the heaviest shoes you want to have on the trip, in colder months. I generally wear booties if it's fall or winter.
include socks! Even with TSA PreCheck and the updates to airport security, you really should wear socks. Your bare feet will be absolutely freezing at 2 AM over the Atlantic. It gets surprisingly chilly in the plane, especially near the walls.
include layers, such as a light trench coat that you'll want to wear in the city where you're going, or, depending on the season, a lightweight, packable travel wrap.

FAQ: Can I wear a travel set on a Europe flight?

Yes! But remember you'll be wearing this set during some of your first day in Europe, so opt for a set that is more 'polished' and less athleisure. Here's my personal favorite (affordable!) travel set, for Europe travel and at home.

What NOT to Wear on Long Flights

pants/shirt you’ll want to wear again because they’ll be airplane filthy and you won't even be able to look at them again,
super-tight leggings, which can be uncomfortable over a long period. I love these crepe pants from Eileen Fisher- they're machine washable, don't wrinkle during the long flight, and have a comfortable waistband. They feel like leggings, but they don't squish you all over during a long flight. Here are a few of my favorite travel pants:

Bringing your big winter coat onto the plane may see like a great idea, but it’s a giant pain. Unless you're in First Class, you have to put the coat under the seat in front of you, or in the overhead bin, and holding a coat through all of the customs lines is a bother.

Unless you're going somewhere with really cold weather where you'll need that coat upon arrival, pack your coat in your checked bag. If it's so cold where you live that you must have a winter coat during your time to and from your home/airport, then put it into the checked bag before you check the bag at the airport.

Worried you'll be cold on the plane? Bring. That. Classy Wrap.

Now is a good time to double check...do you need a thick winter coat at all? I have hauled coats across the Atlantic Ocean several times, only to have them sit in my suitcase for the entire 10-day trip. If you're heading to Spain, for example, the chances you'll actually wear a bulky winter coat are pretty slim.

I bring a small tote bag with me as my personal item on the transatlantic flight. You're not going to use the tote bag while you're actually walking around in Europe, but I find it helpful for all of the airport necessities. I use my Louis Vuitton Neverfull, or another leather option that I don't mind jamming under the seat in front of me. I use my small crossbody as my wallet (strap in carry-on), and then it becomes my daily travel purse in Europe.

FAQ: How do I pack the perfect carry-on for a flight to Europe?

Losing your luggage is always stressful, and it’s that much worse when you’ve just arrived in a foreign country, sweaty, and have to show-up at the hotel and ask them where you can buy a toothbrush. So if you're checking a bag, do what my husband and I do and put essentials in a shared carry-on bag.

With knowledge of packing restrictions for liquids, sharp objects, etc., to me, this translates into:

one shirt,
one pair of pants,
two pairs of underwear,
two pairs of socks that work with the shoes I wore on the plane,
some form of jacket that's suitable for rain (if I didn't bring one onto the plane),
toiletry bag.

Pro tip: Include an *empty* reusable water bottle in your tote for the trip. Once you're through airport security, you can start using it in the airport to cut down on plastic waste, not to mention save a fortune in small water bottle purchases during your travels! FAQ: How should I do my hair for an overnight flight

Styling my hair for a flight to Europe took a few instances of trial and error. I *hated* getting off the plane and having just the greasiest looking hair upon arrival at my hotel. But, I didn't want to wear anything too elaborate because I also had to try to sleep on the plane.

So, a compromise: I shower right before going to the airport for the flight, dry and curl/style my hair, and pin the front up with bobby pins. I wear this "do" until the plane lands and then take the pins out. My hair doesn't look greasy since I'm prevented from touching it by the bobby pins, and is still reasonably "done" since I had styled it not too terribly long before.

FAQ: Should I wear make-up for overnight flights?

I wear extremely light, if any, make-up on an overnight flight. Even the longest-lasting eye make-up often ends up in my eyes by the end of a long travel day. If you want to wear it during the flight itself, I'd recommend something light, such as a tinted moisturizer and eye brow pencil, but I'd hold off on the mascara until arrival at your destination, so you don't end up with a mess after weird airplane half-sleep.

That said, I do tend to drop a few small, airplane-appropriate make-up essentials in my purse, so that I can pop on some quick make-up to arrive at the hotel looking my best.

Perfect Color Palettes and How to Build a European-Style Outfit

They key to packing the perfect line-up of outfits for over a week in Europe? Keep it simple with neutral colors and items that are easily interchangeable and wearable with multiple other pieces. The goal is to be able to create different outfits, and to be able to shake things up if, say, a waiter drops a tray full of red wine on you at a serene cafe on the Seine in Paris. Don't waste what limited space you have in your small suitcase jamming it full of outfits you can't mix-and-match.

Think realistically through the different activities you'll actually be doing while you're 'across the pond.' If you're a dedicated enough runner that you're actually going to hit the gym, then great, pack workout gear. For the rest of us? Leave the gym clothes at home.

FAQ: Will my European hotel room have a washing machine?

It is unlikely that your hotel will have a washing machine for guest use. An apartment rental or hostel may have a washing machine, but do you really want to spend your time using it and likely even paying for the privilege? I've never done laundry in Europe on a 10-day trip.

Packing outerwear for Europe

We tend to travel in Fall/Spring, so often all anyone sees of me on a daily basis while touring are my shoes and my light, waterproof jacket. Europeans tend to wear more layers than Americans, so I like to fit in, as best I can. In general, I'd suggest a light jacket or "topper" that can go with all of the outfits you'll be bringing.In the U.K., you can’t go wrong with a Barbour waxed jacket, or, throughout Europe, with a classic trench. If you're going to be doing a fair amount of evening activities, and are cooler than me, you could also throw in a leather jacket.

The right shirts for exploring Europe

I'd include several pretty basic, long-sleeved shirts (or short-sleeved shirts for summer) for winter/spring/fall. Don't do anything too fancy for everyday walking around. Regardless of the time of year, I'd leave the silk blouse, tank tops, and shirts with writing on them at home.

Finding the Perfect Pants for Europe

For everyday wear, 2 pairs of dark wash jeans or black joggers that look like slacks should be fine. I generally wear jeans during the day, and don't waste my limited space on pants I can only wear once before they wrinkle.

If you'll be visiting in the height of summer, shorts are acceptable for everyday touring, BUT I wouldn't wear anything too short, athletic shorts, or cut-off jeans.

A note on dress codes in Europe...

Be mindful of dress codes at nicer restaurants and religious sites. I would not wear shorts out to dinner in Paris at night, and in Italy and Spain, some of the churches ask that you cover shoulders, or even don't wear shorts or flip flops.

Finding the ideal walking shoes for your Europe trip

If there’s one thing you don’t want to skimp on for a trip to Europe, it’s shoes. Comfortable shoes as a must. If you haven't started breaking in the shoes you intend to wear in Europe, go put them on right now.

My personal approach to packing shoes for my trips to Europe:

one pair of ankle boots;
one pair of neutral sneakers for everyday;
[optional] one pair of flats (I adore these classics from Sam Edelman. I've had several pairs over the years);
[optional] one pair of sandals, if it's summer, for popping out for coffee and letting my feet catch a breather from my other shoes. Leave the beach flip flops at home.

FAQ: Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Sneakers are undoubtedly in style right now. While, you will see Europeans/Brits in sneakers going about their everyday lives (even Kate Middleton wears them), you will not see them wearing "workout shoes" unless they're on their way to the gym. So keep them clean, low-profile, and with limited logos. Like these!

Additionally, there are dress code restrictions at theaters and nice restaurants that disallow "trainers." So be sure you have some loafers as well as that trusty pair of tennis shoes.

Finding the ideal purse for a trip to Europe

The purse you'll use in Europe should be light-weight and able to close fully. Don't bring anything heavy - you'll regret it immediately. If you need to bring a travel backpack, remember, you will have to check a backpack at almost every major museum, which is a huge hassle and will take up valuable touring time.

Your Europe travel bag must close fully. No ifs, ands, or butts about it. In touristy areas, there are going to be pickpockets. A leather cross-body bag that zips is the perfect protection - they can't get in and they can't snatch the purse out of your hand. I don't want to make you paranoid, but trust me, you'd rather not deal with it. Not to mention, you want your hands free to shop, etc., not carrying a bag around.

A few years ago, I'd have said "the days of the fanny pack are over, " and yet, fanny packs are very much back. If you want to wear one as a crossbody, please feel free. I'd opt for leather rather than nylon.

FAQ: What should I keep in my purse on a daily basis in Europe?

Bring only the absolute essentials in your purse for an average day spent exploring Europe. This could include a couple credit cards, your ID, and some local currency. Be sure to get your cash converted in the US before you go. Currency change stations in airports or tourist areas often charge exorbinant fees. And don't forget to tell your bank you're traveling so they don't freeze your credit cards.

One of the most frequent questions I get about packing for a trip to Europe is "where can I find a capsule wardrobe for Europe," and I've finally decided to answer that question. If you’re trying to pack for Europe without overpacking or buying an entirely new wardrobe, this is exactly how I do it. Depending on the extent of your wardrobe, you likely won't even need to buy anything new.

After many trips “across the pond,” I’ve found that the easiest way to pack is to build a small capsule wardrobe of re-wearable basics. Think classic pieces, neutral colors, and items that can be mixed and matched across multiple outfits. I avoid items I can only wear for specific events, pants that only go with one shirt, and anything uncomfortable. If you aren't wearing it at home, you certainly aren't going to reach for it in Europe.

This is exactly what I wear on a typical Europe trip. Outfits and shoes that are comfortable enough for 20,000-step days, but polished enough for dinner and photos I keep for years (and probably rotating on my Alexa).

What Is a Europe Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile pieces that all work together, built around rewearing items multiple times. In general, but especially for Europe, a capsule wardrobe is neutral color palette, classic, and easy to mix and match, as needed. I don't plan outfits for Europe. I pack pieces that become outfits, based on my needs at the time.

My Approach to Packing for Europe

1. Re-wearable basics > “outfits”
The key to a capsule wardrobe is that everything you include works with at least 2–3 other pieces. Honestly, you could stop reading here...but I hope you don't!! Rewearing is key on a long trip, and, to be honest, you likely won't even remember which pictures came from which days, so why not make your suitcase a little lighter?

2. Fabric matters
I don't just throw anything in my suitcase. If I'm being honest, I don't think a huge amount about fabric in my everyday life...and I wear a lot of athleisure. But, for a Europe trip, my whole thought process changes!

wool = can be worn multiple times, classic, great for winter
denim = durable, hides wear
avoid fussy fabrics like silk and linen (though Europeans absolutely do wear both of these fabrics, especially linen)

3. Layers are everything
For reasons of weather comfort, temperature control, and European style, layers are your friend when packing for Europe. Especially if you plan to be out and about from chilly mornings, all the way through to outdoor drinks, you'll generally need a light jacket

4. Finish the outfit
To avoid feeling like I've just thrown on whatever random clothes fit into my suitcase, I make sure to always "finish the outfit" - a term I learned when I worked at Nordstrom before law school. Add a couple from the selection of jacket/belt/scarf/hat to make your outfit feel complete and elevated.

My Europe Capsule Wardrobe (Exact Pieces)

Here's what my approach looks like in practice, to allow you to select your own items. Further down, I've suggested specific pieces, if you're looking for something new.

Tops (4–5 pieces)
This will vary slightly, depending on the season, but your 4-5 pieces should be composed of 2–3 basic t-shirts, 1 elevated top (blouse / knit), and 1 lightweight sweater (preferably wool). If a top can't be worn twice it doesn't come.

Bottoms (2–3 pieces)
Packing the right 'bottoms' for your trip to Europe can really cut down on how much is in your bag. Stick to jeans and dark color pants/shorts that can mix and match and are unlikely to show wear. And no, no one in Europe is tracking how many times you rewear your jeans.

1 pair of jeans (non-negotiable)
1 pair of trousers or pants
1 pair of longer, more tailored shorts, for peak summer (not needed other times, generally)
optional: skirt or dress, for special events/heat of summer

Layers (2–3 pieces)

lightweight jacket trench that can handle rain

structured sweater or cardigan

A trench coat is one of the most useful pieces you can bring to Europe. It'll work for rain, and if you luck out and don't have rain, it'll still instantly pull your outfits together and help you fit in with those fashionable Europeans.

Shoes (2 pairs)
If you can't walk 20,000 steps in them, don't bring them to Europe. Depending on your itinerary, you can likely get away with bringing just one pair of sneakers on your trip. But, I generally like to change up my shoes occasionally, and if you'll be doing anything for which sneakers aren't appropriate (including some restaurants in Europe), you'll likely want to bring a second pair of booties or loafers for night events (or even a second pair of sneakers if it's a very casual trip). Much like a trip to Disney World, you’ll be on your feet all day in Europe — which is why what you pack (especially your shoes) matters so much.

Though a capsule wardrobe's primary benefit is efficiency, it's worth highlighting that it doesn't have to be so pragmatic as to be unfashionable. A few small items can elevate the outfits you create.

I almost always travel with a small leather crossbody bag. A leather crossbody is:

You don’t need nearly as many outfits as you might think. For most trips, I plan to rewear pieces and mix them into different combinations rather than packing a completely new outfit for each day. A small capsule wardrobe of about 10–12 pieces should be able to cover a week or more of travel.

Is it okay to rewear clothes in Europe?
Yes! And you absolutely should. Rewearing outfits is normal and expected, especially when you’re traveling. I choose fabrics that travel well and don’t require washing on my trip. Wool is great because it doesn’t hold odors and can be worn several times. Denim is durable and easy to rewear, many times, even when you aren't traveling. Avoid silk, linen, and anything like athleisure fabrics that is prone to staining.

What shoes should I include in a Europe capsule wardrobe?
Comfort *after repeated, extensive wear* is key. I usually bring one pair of supportive sneakers for walking, plus a second pair like booties or loafers for evening/events that don't involve heavy walking. If you’re traveling in warmer months, you might swap those for sandals or flats. The most important rule: if you wouldn’t walk all day in them at home, don’t bring them to Europe.

Do I need a different outfit for dinner in Europe?

When I'm 'across the pond,' I almost always carry a small, crossbody bag for Europe travel. European cities are busy, you’re walking all day, and an unfortunate reality is that pickpocketing can occasionally happen in crowded tourist areas.

What I look for in a Europe travel purse

The best purse for Europe travel is small, secure, and comfortable enough to carry all day. As much as I love a high-end, label-emblazoned bag for home life, I'd recommend against covering yourself in labels in Europe, both because they tend to wear fewer labels than we do in the US, and because you generally don't want to advertise that you might be carrying a lot of cash. (Also, please don't carry a lot of cash. Not a good idea.)

Additionally, smaller is better when you're traveling in Europe. Days are long, you're taking lots of steps, and any bag can feel like a burden after a few hours. And, of course, the bag should be secure. At an absolute minimum, a bag for Europe travel must zip fully (NO OPEN TOTE BAGS), and ideally be worn crossbody both for safety and so you can use your hands.

My First Impressions of the Arden Cove Bags

Immediately upon removing my bags from their boxes, I was pleasantly surprised by their sturdy construction and...general cuteness. And, perhaps most relevantly, it has a clip so it could clip onto the straps of any of your other bags to be a little crossbody wallet. Just a little reminder - wallet in the back pocket is *not* pickpocket safe. Wear it as a crossbody or put it into another, larger bag.

Probably my personal favorite, the Crissy is a larger crossbody, with two separate zipped areas, the front of which contains the RFID blocking and slots for cards. Best Casual Loafers for Europe

My secret weapon to looking and feeling good on my trips to Europe is a good pair of loafers. On my first trip to Paris, I broke my cardinal rule and wore this Sam Edelman loafer for the first time on my first full-day exploring Paris. Not a blister in sight. Loafers take you from morning coffee, to lunch time, tourists attractions, and even through dinner and after-dinner cocktails, without running afoul of dress codes.

Best Sneakers for Europe

No matter how comfortable your first pair of walking shoes, be sure to bring a second, to give your feet a change of pace. With the loafer being my go-to, I like to bring a casual sneaker for my "full-on" tourist days (The Tower of London, The Roman Forum, etc.) when you are pretty sure you won't be hitting the fanciest restaurant in town for dinner.

Yes, you can wear white sneakers in Europe! While "white sneakers" in Europe has been the "look there goes an American" signal for decades, things have changed. Sneakers are very trendy. If Kate Middleton can wear them so can we. Just make sure they're on-trend, clean, and in good condition.

Waterproof Boots for Rainy Days

On any trip to Europe, unfortunately there will be at least one day that's a complete "wash out," and if you're in the UK, you'll probably have a couple more than one...Be sure to bring some waterproof boots or booties that can handle a rainy slog. If possible, I like to bring an old pair that I can thank for their service and put to rest at the end of the trip. Just make sure they're comfortable enough to walk for miles and miles. Anything from Blondo will do the trick!

I would strongly recommend against rubber "Wellington" or "rain" boots. They'll kill your feet.

Evening Appropriate Shoes

No matter your evening plans, be sure to bring one pair of shoes that are appropriate for a "smart" hotel, cocktails, or seeing a show. These could be booties, leather boots, loafers but should NOT be sneakers.

There's nothing more fun than planning a summer trip to Europe! European travel, as you'll know if you've been following the blog for any amount of time, is one of my great passions (I run a whole website about it)!

Walking all day, seeing incredible historic sight after historic incredible sight, exploring world-class shopping, drinking outside in a piazza the evenings...summer in Europe is simply magical.

Realistically, and with good reason, there's also no more popular time of year to head 'across the pond,' so you'll have plenty of your fellow American tourists and other European on vacation to keep you company.

There's also no warmer time of year, though depending on which part of Europe you'll be exploring, the weather might surprise you and create a few unexpected packing hurdles.

So what should you pack for a summer trip to Europe? While there's no shame in being a tourist, I pride myself on wearing clothes that help me fit in and that don't scream "American tourist" everywhere I go. Nothing makes me happier than when someone thinks I'm a local (and yes, it happens surprisingly often).

So here's my plan for out time together. First, we'll walk through a few FAQs about visiting and packing for Europe in summer, and then we'll move into specific clothing items you'll want to pack for your trip.

The weather you can expect in European countries in the summer months will, as you would obviously expect, vary somewhat.
By way of an example, I'll separate out a bit. For average high/low temperatures (in Fahrenheit) and days of precipitation, here's what you can expect in July:

London 74/59 (7 days)
Paris 78/61 (7 days)
Stockholm 75/59 (8 days)
Rome 89/67 (2 days)

I generally bring a checked back for 10 days in Europe. Whether you'll bring a checked bag or just a carry on, be sure that whatever bag you select has the soft top that has just a flap that unzips at the top. European hotel rooms are tiny, tiny, tiny and the trendy, hard-sided bags that unzip and flop open in two halves take up way too much valuable floor space if you're going to be living out of them.

How do I maximize space in my suitcase for a trip to Europe?

Building a travel wardrobe is necessarily constrained by the physical constraints of that suitcase. Focus on neutral colors and outfits that can be worn multiple times/mixed-and-matched.

Try to plan as many different outfits as you can in advance. Avoid single-use items such as high heels or bathing suits, unless you are absolutely positive you'll be wearing them on your trip, as they take up space and, realistically, don't get used after long days walking on cobblestone streets.

Are there dress codes in Europe in summer?

Packing for a trip to Europe in summer warrants a note on dress codes you may encounter in Europe. In more conservative European countries (such as Italy), you may encounter a modesty dress code at certain religious sites, including the Vatican and just random Catholic Churches you may want to look into as you're strolling around. If you're going to wear a more revealing outfits, it's a good idea to carry a classy wrap.

Additionally, at nice restaurants or theaters, you may encounter no denim or no sneaker ("trainers") dress codes, so be sure to include some non-denim pants and a pair of loafers, etc.

European women tend to wear more neutral colors, fewer logos, and more conservative, formal clothing than Americans, so remember to 'dress up' a bit more than you would to visit, say, a theme park.

Comfortable Shoes

The most important item you'll bring to Europe this summer is, without question, comfortable walking shoes. You're in Europe to walk, explore, see, and experience. You do not want blisters causing you to miss one second of that experience. Expect to do lots of walking in each and every very, very full day. An unbelievable amount of walking. Far more walking than you normally do.
To me, this translates into bringing 3 pairs of shoes on your trip to Europe this summer:

Comfortable sneakers
Booties/Ankle boots or loafers
Pair of sandals that you can actually walk in (not beach flip flops)

FAQ: Can you you wear sneakers in Europe in the summer?

Yes. Years ago, half of any post on what to wear in Europe in summer would have been dedicated to lecturing you about not wearing sneakers in Europe to avoid looking like a tourist. However, sneakers are popular in Europe, just as they are in the U.S. I would wear, clean, neutral sneakers, with minimal logos. Preferably a basic, low-profile white sneaker. If my favorite member of the British Royal Family, HRH The Princess of Wales, can wear white sneakers, we can too.

What to Wear in Europe This Summer:
The Right Purse For Exploring Europe

And the second most important item you'll bring to Europe is the right purse. As, most likely, the majority of you time in Europe will be spent in major cities at large tourist destinations, it's important that said purse have two essential qualities.

First, it must be small, and second, it must close completely. The purse should be small because you simply do not need to carry all of your possessions around with you all day. It's exhausting enough to walk 20,000 steps a day without hauling a giant bag. Many museums and tourist destinations will make you check large bags at the coat check or wear them on your front during your time at the sight. Huge bother, extra cost, and time suck.

And second, the reality of being a tourist is that you are a magnet for pickpockets, especially in the height of tourist season. Tourists tend to carry large amounts of cash and be unaware, so pickpockets make hay when they can. It's a good idea to have a secure purse that zips fully.

Ideally, I'd suggest a classic, leather crossbody.

Selecting pants and shorts for summer in Europe

With the reality of warmer weather in Europe in summer, one of the most difficult items to select are pants/shorts. You need to be comfortable while out walking around all day, and not be burning up, but you want to fit in.

FAQ: Is it OK to wear shorts in Europe?

Yes. You can wear shorts in Europe in summer. I'd wear longer shorts than you would in the States and I would avoid athletic or bike shorts. Chino or jean shorts are perfectly acceptable. Again, be sure to bring longer pants, for dinners or special evening events.

FAQ: Is it OK to wear jeans in Europe?

Yes. Europeans, like Americans wear jeans. I would avoid heavily distressed or acid-washed jeans unless you're younger than the clientele that usually read my blog ;) Be sure to bring some non-denim pants if you'll be going to nice restaurants or the theater, as you may run into "no jeans" dress codes.

Which pants should I pack for my summer trip to Europe?

Personally, I would pack:

a light pair of ankle-length jeans
long pants (non-denim) or linen pants
1 or 2 pairs of long-ish chino or denim shorts

Lightweight shirts

Somewhat easier to pick than pants are a few light weight shirts. A correctly-folded linen shirt and a few short sleeve blouses. Plain t-shirts in basic colors. Leave the tank tops, tube tops, and crop tops at home.

Don't Forget a Hat

For hot days in Mediterranean countries (Italy, Greece, southern France), I'd include a straw hat to keep that hot sun off your face during peak tourism hours.

FAQ: Can I wear a baseball cap in Europe?

While I love a baseball cap as much as any other 30-something American SAHM, I would strongly caution against relying on a baseball cap in Europe. European women simply do not wear them, they'll mess up your hair, and you will really stand out as a tourist.

A few summer dresses

For evenings, winery tours, and less walking-heavy days, I would include a few casual, summer dresses. Unless you're attending a wedding, there's no need to pack anything too 'fancy,' but a dress you could wear with sneakers during the day and sandals and at night would be ideal.

Include that rain gear

Even in summer, I would bring some minimal rain gear: a tiny umbrella and a light jacket that you could wear regardless of rain. If you'll be in Europe (excluding Mediterranean countries) for about a week, your chances of rain are fairly similar to what they'd be in most of the U.S.- could be a day or two, could be none at all. If your suitcase situation is really tight and you're looking to cut things, I'd cut the rain gear for Italy or hopping around Greek Islands. You can always pick up an umbrella over there if you need it.

A Wrap

If you'll be attending evening events, or really determined to bring anything sleeveless, I'd also include a travel wrap, both for cooler evenings, and to cover-up if needed.

Packing for European travel can feel overwhelming, even if it's not your first time. It’s an international trip, usually involves a long flight, often includes travel between cities, and means spending full days walking in unfamiliar places. It’s easy to overthink it, read too many blogs (gasp! wink!), and...wildly overpack.

I’ve been to Europe many times, over a number of years, and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. I’ve hauled multiple suitcases across the Atlantic, and jammed them onto trains (sorry, Husband). I’ve packed outfits I never wore. I’ve brought heavy coats that never left the suitcase. Over the years, I’ve refined my approach and learned what truly works.

And, over these years, I've built a successful business distilling that information to share with you, my lovely Europe travel-obsessed friends. Here’s what not to pack for Europe — and what to bring instead.

What NOT to Pack for Europe

Too Many Clothes
Your trip to Europe is not a Midwestern summer road trip. If you’re unsure whether you’ll wear (and rewear) something, leave it at home. If you can’t see yourself wearing it at least twice, it probably doesn’t belong in your suitcase. Focus on repeat-use basics and durable fabrics like denim, wool, and structured cotton. If you’re traveling between cities — especially by train or budget airline — you’ll be grateful for lighter luggage. Bring instead:
Neutral pieces you can mix and match easily. If you'll be in Europe for 10 days, plan for 5–7 outfits, not 10.

Uncomfortable Shoes
The single most important packing decision you'll make for your Europe trip is your walking shoes. Comfortable shoes are simply non-negotiable.
No matter how lightly you want to pack, one pair just isn't enough. I would bring two pairs of shoes:

A broken-in pair of low-profile sneakers
A second supportive option like boots, ankle boots, or loafers

Do not bring brand-new shoes. Do not bring shoes you “think will be fine.” Long walking days and cobblestones are can be unforgiving.
Leave high heels at home unless you’re attending a literal wedding or special event. For most evenings — even fine dining — your polished flats, loafers, or boots will be completely appropriate.

If you’re from the Midwest like me, you’re used to bundling up. I find most Americans are surprised to learn that Europe often isn’t as cold as they expected.
I’ve hauled heavy wool coats across the Atlantic — only to never wear them.
Unless you’re heading to Northern Europe in deep winter, a structured jacket or trench layered over sweaters is usually sufficient. Even winter highs in cities like Madrid hover around 50°F. For detailed season-by-season outfit ideas, check out Europe Travel Wardrobe By Season.

Bring instead:
Layers + a packable waterproof jacket.

Idealized “One-Wear” Outfits
Unless you’re attending a wedding or the opera, leave statement pieces at home. Skip:

Evening bags
Frilly tops that match only one item
Outfits requiring specific “extras”

Revealing Tops and Tiny Shorts
This can be controversial, but it’s true: Europeans generally dress more conservatively than Americans.
That doesn’t mean no one wears shorts or fitted tops. But culturally, coverage tends to be greater — especially outside beach towns.
It’s also rarely as hot as much of the U.S. And if you plan to visit churches or religious sites, modest dress is required. There was a viral video last summer of a young American girl being denied entrance to a church because of her spaghetti strap dress. Is it the end of the world? No. But being inappropriately dressed could avoidably, negatively impact your sight seeing.

Understated, smart-casual pieces that wouldn’t feel out of place at lunch with your grandmother.

Superfluous Toiletries & Self-Care products
You do not need full-size shampoo, multiple face creams, or backup products “just in case.” You can:

Use what your hotel provides
Buy travel sizes
Decant into small containers
Buy products in Europe

Large Purses
A good Europe trip is a busy Europe trip.
There’s no need to carry a large bag daily. You’ll only fill it.
Additionally, pickpocketing is an unfortunate reality in tourist-heavy areas and on public transport. Your bag should close fully and sit securely against your body. Carry as little with you on a daily basis as possible, including credit cards, a small amount of converted cash, keys, your phone, hand sanitizer, etc. Leave the rest in your hotel room/hotel safe.

A week in Europe. What could be better? Plenty of time to settle in, adjust to the time change, take a day trip or two, and soak in that enviable European history, mystery, lifestyle and...wine. Lots of wine. Even more walking. Packing for a week in Europe can be intimidating, especially if it's your first time "across the pond," your first time in a new city, or the first long trip you've taken in a while.

A seven-day Europe trip is amazing, but heavy luggage is not. Overpacking makes airports and cobblestones harder than they need to be. This guide focuses on what you’ll wear on repeat, so you can travel light. With plenty of Europe travel experience under my belt, I've learned that having specific items isn't what matters. It's bringing the right collection of pieces for you and the sort of trip you have planned, not to mention to your favorite things that you'll reach for.

FAQ: Can I pack everything I need for a week in Europe in a carry-on?

Yes, you definitely can, and many people do, pack all of your Europe travel clothes for a week in a carry-on. Personally, I like to bring a checked bag. The larger bag allows me to have space for purchases I make on my trip, and I don't have to pay extra, since it's included in the (high) cost of my international ticket (not always the case - check your ticket!). I also don't have to deal with the bag in the airport or when we change planes. It's not very common for European hotels to have a washing machine, especially in a big city. FAQ: Where can I find the best luggage for a trip to Europe?

The most important thing to remember when shopping for luggage for a trip to Europe is how small European hotel rooms are. There's limited floor space and often limited closet space. I generally recommend a soft-sided suitcase that just unzips at the top with a flap (example from TravelPro), rather than the trendy, hard-sided bag that unzips like a butterfly. The latter will take up too much valuable floor space when you have it open. I also find that inexpensive hard-sided luggage tends to crack. FAQ: Do I need my winter coat in Europe?

Generally, for a week in Europe, almost any time of year, it will not be cold enough for your American winter coat, unless you are going to Northern Europe in the depths of winter/for the holidays. Check the weather. It may surprise you. I have taken the same winter coat to Europe not once, but twice, in spring and not worn it once...

FAQ: How many outfits should I pack for a 7-day trip to Europe?

Given the unpredictable nature of travel, I always try to pack clothes that can mix and match with each other, rather than specific outfits. Stick to neutral, darker colors. Be sure to bring jeans and a few shirts that can be worn multiple times. Remember that the clothes you wear on the airplane to begin your journey may be so dirty/sweaty/stale that you do not wish to wear them again. I generally wear leggings on the plane, since they don't take up my space in my suitcase for the rest of the trip.

FAQ: Can I do laundry when I'm in Europe for a week?

Yes, you "can" do laundry in Europe. Cities will have laundromats just like we do, and some hotels will have machines (far less likely than in the USA). Nice hotels will often offer a service where they will wash items for you, as we do here. But, if you can avoid it, I'd avoid laundry. Opt for denim, cashmere, and other items that can be worn multiple times without washing.

Alright, it's time to dive in! I will walk you through 7 essential categories of items you'll need for week-long your trip to Europe, including a few more FAQ's along the way. If you want to purchase new items in anticipation of your trip, great! If not, I'm certain you have the vast majority of these items in your closet and ready to roll, without adding extra expense to an already astonishingly pricey trip.

One or Two Pairs of Your Best, Most Comfortable Walking Shoes

The twisting, turning, winding, cobblestone streets may form the backdrops of some of my fondest memories of our very romantic week in Rome, but they also really took a toll on my poor feet. Preparing for a week in Europe should start with taking a good, hard look at the footwear you intend to bring and making sure that each and every pair is up to the task.

FAQ: Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Absolutely! Stylish sneakers are acceptable in Europe and you'll see many Europeans wearing them as they go about their daily lives. Even a decade ago, half of this post would have been devoted to me lecturing you about not wearing "tennis shoes" in Europe. But those days are thankfully gone. (With my arthritis, it's such a blessing!) Just remember a few guidelines: keep the logos to a minimum and the color palette more muted than we wear here in the States. Think white canvas, or a darker leather sneaker, not the neon, logo-emblazoned shoes you'd wear to the gym.

I generally recommend bringing two or three pairs of shoes for a week in Europe. This gives you an extra pair to slip into the rotation to make sure you don't get too sore.

Sneakers. The best shoes for a trip to Europe are sneakers. As we've discussed, with certain restrictions, they're acceptable in Europe these days, so consider yourself lucky that these comfortable shoes have gone from massive faux pas to must-have item.
Boots/Booties. On every trip I've taken to Europe, since my very first, I've included a pair of water resistant Blondo boots or booties. Either black or brown. They look good, are just as comfortable as sneakers, and especially for colder months or any trip to the UK, they won't get trashed if they get wet. You can also wear them with tights and a skirt for evening.
Loafers. For evening, or days with lighter walking plans, a pair of *broken in* loafers are a great pair of shoes to throw in your bag.

It's worth reiterating, just one more time: it's a good idea to make sure all of your shoes are thoroughly broken in, well before your trip. I will not have you missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience because of easily avoidable blisters. One great way to save space in your return suitcase is to consider bringing a pair of shoes that have served you well and can be left behind at the end of your trip. I've done their a few time, particularly at the end of an especially rainy spring-in-London trip.

And please, please, please leave that pair of flip flops at home unless you'll be spending time at the actual beach. And if you are planning a beach trip, remember to bring non flip-flops as well, as they aren't as prevalent in Europe as in the US. You should really only wear them when you are actively at the pool/beach.

A note on dress codes in Europe

It is almost certain that during your time in Europe, you will encounter at least one dress code. Dress codes in Europe tend to come in two types: posh restaurants and religious sites. First, fancy restaurants will often have a light dress code that bans sweatsuits, athletic gear, torn up jeans, and sneakers. As most readers of my blog aren't wearing most of these things, the only thing to keep in mind is to bring a dress or non-denim pants, and at least one pair of shoes that aren't tennis shoes. For me, that's usually loafers or boots/booties.

Religious sites will sometimes have dress codes requesting essentially 'basic modesty' - covered shoulders, longer shorts/skirts. Extremely conservative churches may offer shawls, but I've only seen that once. This tends to be more common in southern Europe, which is also where it's hotter/more likely to be an issue. So, just be sure to wear longer shorts in summer (which you should do anyway because Europeans don't show as much skin as Americans), and bring a jacket or sweater if you must wear a tank top (better to just wear something with shoulder coverage to avoid sunburn anyway).

The Quintessential, Stylish & Practical Jacket for Europe

After those walking shoes, selecting the right light jacket is the most important decision you'll make as you pack for your week in Europe. EVEN FOR SUMMER TRAVEL, you will want a light jacket, both for style and for temperature/rain.

On our first trip to Europe, London in August, I was so sure I didn't need a jacket. I packed only a very light 'topper'/blazer (this was a while ago) that I used to wear to work at my law firm. But I felt half-naked in the clothes I had packed (including GASP a few sleeveless tops). I wore that topper everyday and learned my lesson. Regardless of season, bring a light jacket or trench coat.

I generally only bring one coat, while I use for style, warmth, and rain protection, as needed. In Continental Europe, that's a classic trench coat. In England & Scotland, it's anything Barbour. Neither has served me wrong yet. For the UK, I also bring a tiny travel umbrella small enough to fit into my Barbour coat's massive pockets.

The Right Purse for Exploring Europe

Alrighty! Let's talk purses for a week in Europe. It's actually one of my favorite topics (I'm considering giving it its own blog post). I think our natural instinct when going somewhere new and different is to cling to as much of our "normal" life as possible. On a trip to Europe, that seems to translate into lugging around all of your possessions. I strongly caution against this. And one of the easiest ways to limit how much you haul around with you is to bring only a small purse, and keep it tight, so you won't have much space to fill with junk. Your free hands and less exhausted legs will thank me at the end of a day walking 25,000 steps.

On a daily basis, I would bring only: credit card/debit card, a small amount of cash in the local currency, hotel key, ID (NOT your passport. Leave that in the hotel), hand sanitizer, your phone.

Your purse for your week in Europe should have a few attributes:

Small
Light-weight
Hands-free
Not easily taken/opened

I never want to make tourists paranoid about pickpockets. I've never been pickpocketed. But there risk is there. Especially in large tourist sites where lots of tourists congregate, such as around the base of the Eiffel Tower or outside the Colosseum). Just be smart. Don't talk to strangers or fill our random surveys they try to hand you to distract you. It's OK to be "rude." Just keep walking, don't leave your purse open, and you'll do just fine. That said, Don't carry tons of cash or you passport in your purse. Why risk it.

Personally, I opt for a leather crossbody bag. It's tasteful and neutral, so I can wear it with anything, and it leaves my hands free to do whatever I need to do (shop!)

FAQ: Can I wear a Lululemon belt bag during my week in Europe?

Ironically, "fanny packs" have come full circle in the European travel packing guidance world. They were popular 30 years ago for American tourists, but we were strongly cautioned not to wear them in Europe. We did anyway, and created the stereotype of a tourist. Now, the "crossbody" fanny pack ("belt bag") is all the rage in the US. You can wear one in Europe these days. It has the advantage of being very close to your body, and obviously hard to snatch away or steal from. That said, I'd go for a non-nylon material, such as leather, just to elevate the look a bit, and make it less athletic.

FAQ: Should I buy a travel backpack for my trip to Europe?

Unless you are traveling with a child or backpacking, I would advise against a travel backpack. They very obviously mark you as a tourist, and many museums make you check large bags, including backpacks, in the coatcheck, or wear them on your front. The vast majority of tourists do not need to carry that quantity of items for daily tourism in Europe.

Jeans & 'Travel Pants'

People often wonder if they can wear jeans in Europe. You certainly can wear jeans in Europe, and for a week-long trip, a pair of jeans is, frankly, a must-have. Keep your jeans darker and avoid denim with holes or bleaching.

In addition to your jeans, I'd bring two pairs of pants that aren't denim. Either black pants or travel joggers. In summer, feel free to wear chino shorts, as long as they're a little longer than the shorts you might usually wear in The States.

FAQ: Do Europeans wear short shorts?

If you're asking this question, the shorts you're planning to wear are probably too short. Europeans show far less skin than Americans, in every season, but especially in summer. It is generally neither as hot nor as humid in Europe as in the US, and their culture is, at least in that regard, somewhat more conservative than ours. Chino shorts are fine. NO cut-off denim, no athletic shorts, and my goodness no bike shorts. Dress like you're going to grab lunch with your parents and you'll do just fine.

A note on athleisure in Europe

The mention of athletic shorts has me thinking: while the athleisure look has taken the US by storm and is clearly here to stay, the same cannot be said for Europe. Europeans do not walk around in gym clothes unless they are, you guessed it, going to the gym. If you, like me, wear a lot of Lululemon, I'm not saying you need to buy a whole new wardrobe for your week in Europe. But it's a good idea to tone down the athleisure by: not wearing leggings as pants, mixing in non-athletic materials (like a denim jacket), and keeping logos and bright colors to a bare minimum.

Layering: A Quick Guide

Regardless of season, layering is the name of the game for your trip to Europe. As we've discussed, most countries in Europe have significantly cooler weather than we do, and Europeans tend to wear an outer layer more often than us. And, of course, you want to be prepared for rain, temperature fluctuations, and the transition inside and outside. OH and of course, you want to be prepared to eat outside whenever possible.

So under that jacket, I bring a few long-sleeved shirts, a few short-sleeved shirts, and, in cooler months, a light sweater. I tend to avoid frilly blouses or shirts that must stand alone, as I find I wear my jacket more than I plan to.

FAQ: Do European hotel rooms have air conditioning?

It is not as hot in Europe as in most of the United States, so buildings in many European countries, which are far older than ours and less likely to be knocked down and modernized from the ground up, do not have air conditioning. That said, museums, large tourist attractions, many stores, lots of public spaces, and high-end hotels almost always have AC. With temps rising, and as a weak Yankee, I always select a hotel with central air (not a window unit).

FAQ: What make-up should I bring to Europe?

For day-to-day tourism, I generally wear tinted moisturizer & blush, eyebrow pencil and mascara. I also bring eye liner and an eye shadow stick for evening events. I try to keep it as light as possible, on long days of lots of walking and often unpredictable weather. If you're going to put everything in a carry-on bag, don't forget to make sure all of your liquids are under the 3.4 ounce max size for TSA.

FAQ: How do I style my hair in a European hotel room?

Personally, I like to spend as little time as possible doing my hair when I'm on vacation. So I wash it every few days, curl it, and then just touch up the curl as needed during the trip. Most hotels will have a small, cheap, loud hair dryer provided for your use. Remember, if you are bringing your own devices, to bring a plug converter.

Wondering how you look stylish on a trip to Europe, while being comfortable enough to walk around *all day everyday* for 10 days? It's a hard nut to crack, but after 6 trips "across the pond" over 4 years, I do consider myself an expert.

I've collected some "go-to" outfits that are chic and stylish, without being uncomfortable. Who knew that combination existed? I certainly didn't - and you'll note you won't be seeing any pictures from my first trip to Europe, because I've metaphorically burned all the the ones with me in them.

Wait. Are you saying travel is all about what I'm wearing?

I am *not* saying that traveling is all about appearances, though, I do write about the subject often. Traveling is about exploring, seeing the world, expanding your horizons, and learning how other people live.

It can be one of the most enriching experiences, and getting out there and taking a chance should always top your list.

That said, you're here to learn about clothes.

I argue that feeling comfortable and confident is part of my personal enjoyment of travel (and everyday life), and I know that many, many of you agree with me. I like to feel like I fit in, look good, and am representing myself well.

One of the things I enjoy learning when I'm abroad is how people dress (it was in England that I discovered my love of Barbour) and how social normal differ from what I'm used to (read: endless saying of "Bonjour!" in France).

I've rounded up my tips to help you figure out what to wear in Europe, without looking like a tourist (at least to the extent possible).

Preparing for Your Trip

Let's start at the very beginning! What do you need to do to prepare for a trip to Europe (outside of all of the planning of the trip itself - for more on that, check out the full post: How to Plan a Trip to Europe!).

Part of the logistics of preparing for a long trip are simply that a longer vacation than most people usually take. And, of course, you are going somewhere that maybe you've never been, or that you've only been a couple of times.

No post about traveling to Europe would be complete with out a quick plug: be sure to order some packing cubes for your trip.

They make all of your packing easier and allow you to stay organized in your tiny, European hotel room.

Checking the weather forecast

As with any trip that's largely dependent on outdoor activities, you should do a deep dive on the weather forecast before your trip to Europe.

In general, and regardless of the time of year, the weather in Europe is milder than the weather we experience here in North America (at least in Indianapolis). Summers aren't as hot, winters aren't as cold, and they don't get as much snow, if you're visiting in winter.

In general, plan for light layers and you'll do just fine.

A neutral palette

Make the most of your limited suitcase space by sticking to mix-and-matchable neutral colors. You can't predict how many outfits you'll need to make during your trip, and being able to change things up at the last minute is key. Additionally, European women tend toward a more subdued palette and fewer bright colors, so you'll fit in better with the crowd.

Further, I'd steer toward solid colors and avoid graphic tees, slogans, and logos. Stick to timeless pieces.

Best nail polishes for a trip to Europe

As most Americans stay in Europe at least a week, how are you to keep your nails looking fresh throughout the trip? You certainly want to avoid spending your time at the nail salon or hunting for nail polish remover at a pharmacy during your trip.

Thanks to the advent of "gel" nail polish, you can keep your nails looking fresh for your entire trip. I generally can keep my gel manicure for about two weeks. If you haven't used gel before, definitely try out gel before your European trip, to ensure that it works for you.

And, if all of this is just a bit much, or if you'll be taking an active vacation and don't want to worry about your nails, why not get a manicure with all the shaping and cuticle procedures, but *without polish*?

Packing jewelry for a trip to Europe

It goes without saying that the majority of countries in Europe are extremely safe. That said, it's travel itself, not specific countries, that makes traveling with jewelry always a bit risky.

Make sure all of your important jewelry (engagement and wedding rings, etc.) are insured before you go.

If you're worried about those expensive pieces, leave them at home. I recently got a diamond eternity band from Noemie, that I'm planning to take to Europe in place of my usual rings.

I bring only as much jewelry as I can wear on a normal day, and I wear it each and every day. That way, I'm not leaving it in the hotel room or getting confused about whether or not I have everything.

What to Wear on Your Flight to Europe

I try to keep my travel make-up fairly light. I find Europeans don't wear a ton of make-up, and they seem to have a great way of looking chic without it. For tourists, I don't want to have runny mascara, or eye shadow up to my eyebrows at the end of a long day.

Selecting the right clothes for the transatlantic flight

Your outfit for a long-haul flight to Europe serves several purposes. In addition to keeping you comfortable during a frankly grueling flight across the Atlantic Ocean, it's also an opportunity to bring items with you, outside of your suitcase. I would not wear a shirt or pants that you intend to wear throughout your trip, as they'll be 'airplane filthy' after you land. I would wear your heaviest shoes (generally booties or sneakers), to save room in your suitcase.

Packing the perfect carry-on for your long haul flight to Europe

The most important thing to include in your carry-on bag is a full change of clothes for your first day in Europe.

Unfortunately, especially if you change plans, it's not uncommon for your luggage to get separated from you. In the event that happens, you still want to be able to hit the ground running, feeling fresh in a clean outfit. So, it's a good idea to include pants, a shirt, deodorant, and a change of underwear and socks, in addition to a toothbrush and travel toothpaste in your carry-on bag.

What to Wear in Europe: Logistics once you arrive

Styling your hair in a European hotel room

How are you going to look perfect if you don't have your normal hair styling products? Most hotels in Europe will have a hair dryer. But, when it comes to other styling devices, you'll need to have that adapter if you're going to want to use your straightener or curler. Of course, you don't want to spend your whole trip to Europe doing your hair. I just curl mine every other day, between washes. Don't forget the dry shampoo. While we American girls tend to each for baseball caps on our non-wash days, I'd skip the caps in Europe. They aren't as commonly worn by European women, and you'll stand out as a tourist.

A note on dress codes in Europe

In some destinations you'll visit in Europe, including 'sharp' restaurants and some religious sites, you may run across a dress code. In general, cultural norms dictate more conservative clothing, regardless of a formal dress code. The dress codes in restaurants generally prohibit 'trainers' (sneakers), torn jeans, and sometimes athleisure wear or sweatsuits. In religious sites, modest attire is sometimes requested for women, such as shoulder covering, or no very short shorts or skirts.

Unless you'll be going to Northern Europe in the dead of winter, light jackets are the name of the game. For most countries in Europe, a light trench coat/windbreaker will be a great day-to-day top layer, rain or shine.

FAQ: Should I bring my winter coat to Europe?

In general, I'd say no. I've flown my winter jacket to both London and Paris, only to have it take up space in my suitcase and never see the light of day. If you'll be visiting Northern Europe in the depths of winter, then by all means, bring the winter coat. Any other European cities? Skip it.

Comfortable walking shoes for Europe

Finding the perfect walking shoes is *key* to feeling comfortable on a trip to Europe. Lots and lots of walking will be your main activity and cobblestone streets, combined with even the smallest blister can seriously ruin a tourism day. In addition to comfort, there are a few other elements to keep in mind when picking shoes for Europe:

Bring versatile shoes that can be interchangeable with different outfits.
Don't bring event-specific shoes (high heels, beach flip flops) unless you are positive you will be attending an event where they are required.
Check the dress codes of special events to be sure you have the appropriate attire (some fancy restaurants don't allow tennis shoes).
I'd suggest rotating your during-the-day walking shoes every couple of days. Don't rely on just one pair.

Break in your shoes before you get to Europe

I would recommend relying on shoes you've had for a while for the everyday walking. If you're going to buy new shoes for your trip, definitely do this thoughtfully. If you have new shoes, even ones you're planning to wear just for evening/special events, definitely break them in before your trip.

You simply can't walk 20,000 steps a day in new shoes.

FAQ: Can I wear sneakers in Europe?

Not too many years ago, a significant portion of this 'how to not look like a tourist in Europe' post would have been dedicated to lecturing you about there's no easier way to identify an American tourist than by their "clunky, white tennis shoes." Well, times have changed and so has European style. Feel free to wear a pair of classic, white sneakers. If Kate Middleton can do it, so can we.

My packing list of comfortable shoes Europe for is:

one pair of boots or booties. I like Blondo boots because they're waterproof, but aren't "rain boots," so they're perfect for rainy, yet classy, days;
A pair of flats (I am obsessed with Sam Edelman loafers); and
one pair of classic tan or white sneakers

Purses for Europe

The right purse will be one of your more vital accessories on a trip to Europe. It's also one of the easier pieces to find.

The ideal purse for Europe should have three essential qualities:

It should be as small as possible to carry only your essential items
It should close fully. I say this not to scare you, but to prevent avoidable accidents. Pickpockets are a real concern, especially in 'touristy' areas, like near the Eiffel Tower.
It should be able to withstand some amount of weather, if you're caught by surprise, particularly if you're visiting the UK

In general, I prefer a leather crossbody bag.

FAQ: Do I need a travel backpack in Europe?

No. Unless you are traveling with small children, or need to carry a large number of possessions for some specific reason, I would skip the backpack for everyday touring in Europe. This is for several reasons.

First, carrying a huge number of items is simply going to tire you out and be a massive pain. You aren't in the wilderness.

Second, most museums will make you either check your backpack at bag check area, which is a bother, takes time, and sometimes costs money.

And finally, you might as well wear an "I'm a tourist" sign. Not that it's necessarily 'bad' to be a tourist, but you're reading this post because you want to fit in and look your best in Europe. Just like in the US, adults in European countries don't wear backpacks, unless they're in high school.

Pants for Europe

Our finally outfit building block for your trip to Europe is a great pair of pants. I say "pants," but here's your potentially unnecessary reminder of a fun linguistic difference between us and Brits: Brits call underwear "pants" and slacks/pants "trousers." So don't run around talking about your "pants" in the UK.

Ok, enough about linguistics. I'd generally recommend bringing a great pair of jeans and a couple pairs of black travel pants or nice non-sweatpant joggers for your trip. Make sure your jeans are well-fitting and not distressed. And be sure that you have pants/skirts that aren't denim, if you plan to visit any 'smart' restaurants.

FAQ: Can I wear shorts in Europe?

Yes, you can wear shorts for your summer trip to Europe, and European women do wear shorts.

However, it's not generally as hot in Europe as it is in the U.S., so to fit right in with the Europeans, consider wearing longer, chino shorts than you normally would (example linked here). I would also avoid denim shorts or athletic shorts, as they aren't consistent with European fashion trends.

No matter the country, I always recommend adding a scarf to most outfits for winter/spring/fall in Europe. They're perfectly comfortably for travel, yet keep you looking classy and polished all day long.

A wrap

For the airplane rides, late-nights, outdoor dinners, and even casual museum strolling on a nice day, I love a wrap to keep my temperature comfortable when going in and out of AC, or when the temperature unexpectedly dips.

Preparing for rain in Europe

If you come prepared, you can avoid the ultimate mark of the tourist, the dreaded plastic parka.

Generally, I rely on a small, extremely compact umbrella, a light rain jacket, and waterproof shoes, but not rain boots, which are hard to walk in and will inevitably cause blisters, no matter how comfortable you think they are. That way, I'm prepared for rain, but also look normal...not like I'm about to go on the Maid of the Mist.
